Arthur Ankeney - Walker
Arthur Ankeney’s mother Mary Ellen Ankeney laughs when she’s asked how it happened that Arthur joined the JIM training team in preparation to walk 26.2 miles. Then she grows serious. At 10 years old, Arthur is Megan’s younger brother and, in a way, he’s always lived in the backwater of his sister’s disease. Mary Ellen Ankeney ticks off the reasons Arthur signed up for the team: "One, he wanted to go on the trip. Two, he thought it would be fun. Three, he likes the extra time with me," Mary Ellen Ankeney says.

44. Arthur E. Walker 2001
arthur E. walker was born in Danville, Kentucky, July 1, 1905. He attendedDanville High School. In 1922, he enrolled at the University
http://www.ktc.uky.edu/A_Walker_text.htm
Mr. Walker's military service included a stint in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. He attained the rank of captain before being discharged in June 1945.
During his professional career, he brought recognition to himself and Mt. Sterling/Montgomery County through several leadership rolls in regional and statewide organizations. He served as president of Kentucky Highway Division of A.G.C. in 1953, president of Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors in 1954, and president of Plantmix Asphalt Industry of Kentucky in 1968.
He had a passion to create a better living environment for Kentuckians. One way he did this was through a successful business that brought jobs to the community. He also served the community as a longtime director of Mt. Sterling National Bank and Delta Natural Gas Company of Winchester. Also, he was a long-term director of Mary Chiles Hospital and was one of the founders of the Mt. Sterling Golf and Country Club.
Mr. Walker was a member of the Centenary Methodist Church in Danville. He married the former Anne Frances Hamilton of Danville. They had one son, Arthur E. Walker Jr. and four grandchildren. His mentorship set an example for his son and grandchildren.
Mr. Walker was a very astute business leader and outstanding citizen and made significant contributions to a better community, state, and nation. He died January 24, 1981, and through his son and family, he gave posthumously to the establishment of a large recreational park named in his honor. This park will be the site for wholesome activities in perpetuity, influencing the lives of thousands of children and adults.

From a series: Obscure Moments in American History I am working on a book about American history and find odd moments like this the most interesting. President Garfiend was shot. He lingered a while before he died, giving everyone a chance to build up a worry about the Vice President. Here he is being sworn in. Nobody wanted him to be president, not even himself. There was a strong rumour that he was born in Canada, which would have let him off. In the end he was one of the more independent spirits who occupied that office and did some good things. But nobody ever liked him. He was not renominated and died in what would have been his second term.

Swan Song Walker KO's DeKuh December 6, 1932 Los Angeles Coming some ten weeks after having taken a brutal beating at the hands of Max Schmeling Mickey Walker was back in the ring in front of the his Hollywood crowd. An overweight Mickey managed to knock out heavyweight Arthur DeKuh in the first round. This was to be the beginning of the end for Walker as a top flight competitor. After two more bouts he and Doc Kearns parted company, Doc was not one to hang around with a loser. Even though Mickey would get a shot at the light heavyweight title the following year, losing to Maxie Rosenbloom, it was second-rate and down hill from here. The lady at ringside striking the dramatic pose is actress Lupe Velez, seated to her right is John Boles on her left Johnny Weissmuller. Mickey Always Attracted A Fun Crowd Vintage Original Wide World Photo. Size: 7 X 9 in. Condition: Fine Price: $ 52.00 Interestingly this is one of the images Walker chose for inclusion in his autobiograph, Mickey Walker. The Toy . His comment on this photo included, "Lupe Valez...She was one of the most dynamic persons I have ever known. "

"ARTHUR (3)-John (2), Arthur (l)-became a freeman May 8, 1743, married Almy , and dwelt in West Greenwich, R. I. The census of 1774 gives as his family two males over 16, and two females over 1 .A deed which appears to have been made by this Arthur Sept. 14,1775. designates Amey as his wife. David Culver administered upon his estate, and the inventory of his personal property rendered Oct. 14,1794, amounted to 35£ 16s.
He obtained of Wm. Reynolds, Feb. 9. 1742-3, a forty acre lot, which is still none by his name. It appears that for some reason his family or children, except his son Joseph, left Rhode Island. It is stated that his wife left the children, but at what time they emigrated has not been ascertained. Arthur died on his homestead. His son Joseph continued to live on the lot near where be also died. Two lonely graves are pointed out as being the graves of Arthur and his son Joseph. The title to the lot did not pass to Joseph, who dwelt there alone for a number of years previous to his death. The lot was sold by the town council for taxes, and about ten years after Joseph's death, Burton Briggs acquired title from the heirs of Arthur that could be found. The children of Arthur (3) and Almy, so far as we have account, were as follows":

DAVID M. WALKER
This page last revised February 23, 2003
David M. Walker became the seventh Comptroller General of the United States and began his 15-year term when he took his oath of office on November 9, 1998. As Comptroller General, Mr. Walker is the nation’s chief accountability officer and head of the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO), a legislative branch agency founded in 1921. GAO’s mission is to help improve the performance and assure the accountability of the federal government for the benefit of the American people. Over the years, GAO has earned a reputation for professional objective, fact-based, and nonpartisan reviews of government issues and operations. The long tenure of the Comptroller General gives GAO a continuity of leadership and independence that is rare within government. Both elements help to allow GAO to consider long-range and cross-governmental issues and alert policymakers to problems looming on the horizon, such as the growing burden of entitlement programs or the nation’s deteriorating infrastructure. Mr. Walker serves as Chair of the U.S. Intergovernmental Audit Forum, the U.S. Joint Financial Management Improvement Program, and the Center for Continuous Auditing. He is on the Board of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions and various educational and not-for-profit entities. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and an active member of various professional public service, and other organizations. Mr. Walker is also listed in Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in America.

Now, I wish to say something more about Boy Jim, not only because he was the comrade of my youth, but because you will find as you go on that this book is his story rather than mine, and that there came a time when his name and his fame were in the mouths of all England. You will bear with me, therefore, while I tell you of his character as it was in those days, and especially of one very singular adventure which neither of us are likely to forget. It was strange to see Jim with his uncle and his aunt, for he seemed to be of another race and breed to them. Often I have watched them come up the aisle upon a Sunday, first the square, thick-set man, and then the little, worn, anxious-eyed woman, and last this glorious lad with his clear-cut face, his black curls, and his step so springy and light that it seemed as if he were bound to earth by some lesser tie than the heavy-footed villagers round him. He had not yet attained his full six foot of stature, but no judge of a man (and every woman, at least, is one) could look at his perfect shoulders, his narrow loins, and his proud head that sat upon his neck like an eagle upon its perch, without feeling that sober joy which all that is beautiful in Nature gives to usa vague self- content, as though in some way we also had a hand in the making of it.
