Camille Jordan (1838-1921) was born on January 5, 1838 in Lyons, France, into a well-to-do family. At the age of seventeen he entered the Ecole Polytechnique to become an engineer. During his time as an engineer, he had ample opportunity to carry out his mathematical research and to write most of his 120 papers. He retired as an engineer in 1885. From 1873 until 1912 he taught at the Ecole Polytechnique and the College de France. Jordan was a universal mathematician. He published papers in all branches of mathematics of his time. In analysis, he originated the concept of a bounded function. In topology, he showed that a plane can be decomposed into two regions by a simple closed curved. Traite des substitutions . His Traite des substitutions became a bible in all areas of group theory. Jordan's deepest result in algebra were his finiteness theorems. He was joined by Felix Klein and Sophus Lie in the study of groups of movements in three-dimensional space. His Course d'analyse , published in the early 1880s, had a great influence on mathematics and set the standard for rigor. In this book, he showed how multiple integrals can be evaluated by successive integrations. In his study of solvable groups, he made extensive use of concepts such as normal subgroup, homomorphic images of a group, and quotient groups. He was the first one to use the term "simple group."

Camille Jordan Cauchy in particular had been one to take this route and, like Cauchy , Jordan was able to work as an engineer and still devote considerable time to mathematical research. Jordan's doctoral thesis was in two parts with the first part Sur le nombre des valeurs des foncyions being on algebra. The second part entitled Sur des periodes des fonctions inverses des integrales des differentielles algebriques was on integrals of the form u dz where u is a function satisfying an algebraic equation f u z ) = 0. Jordan was examined on 14 January 1861 by Duhamel Serret and Puiseux . In fact the topic of the second part of Jordan's thesis had been proposed by Puiseux Jordan married Marie-Isabelle Munet, the daughter of the deputy mayor of Lyon, in 1862. They had eight children, two daughters and six sons. Jordan was a mathematician who worked in a wide variety of different areas essentially contributing to every mathematical topic which was studied at that time. The references [3], [4], [5], [6] are to the four volumes of his complete works and the range of topics is seen from the contents of these. Volumes 1 and 2 contain Jordan's papers on finite groups, Volume 3 contains his papers on linear and multilinear algebra and on the theory of numbers, while Volume 4 contains papers on the topology of polyhedra, differential equations, and mechanics.

    A Letter To Camille Jordan
    Citizen Representative
As everything in your Report, relating to what you call worship, connects itself with the books called the Scriptures, I begin with a quotation therefrom. It may serve to give us some idea of the fanciful origin and fabrication of those books. 2 Chronicles xxxiv. 14, etc. "Hilkiah, the priest, found the book of the law of the Lord given by Moses. And Hilkiah, the priest, said to Shaphan, the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord, and Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan. And Shaphan, the scribe, told the king, (Josiah,) saying, Hilkiah, the priest, hath given me a book." This pretended finding was about a thousand years after the time that Moses is said to have lived. Before this pretended finding, there was no such thing practised or known in the world as that which is called the law of Moses. This being the case, there is every apparent evidence that the books called the books of Moses (and which make the first part of what are called the Scriptures) are forgeries contrived between a priest and a limb of the law, [NOTE: It happens that Camille Jordan is a limb of the law. Author. (Paine's NOTE) (This note is not in the French pamphlet. Editor. Conway.)]
