When searching the online catalogs of other libraries there are several things you need to keep in mind.
  • Not all library catalogs are created equal, which means that most will look completely different from ALCUIN (Furman University's library catalog.) These differences are mostly cosmetic.
  • The information available in each library catalog is basically the same. They all provide information on what materials that library owns. Most include journals the library subscribes to, and many include media and government documents the library collects.
  • They all allow you to search by title, author, and subject. Most allow keyword searching.
  • It is not always possible to visit these libraries in person. Visit the ILL/Document Delivery web page for information on how to obtain items not owned by the Furman University Libraries.

When libraries pool their buying power, limited resources can be used to their fullest potential. JanWay company has developed programs to help libraries maximize their buying power. JanWay's cooperative summer reading programs will save money for your library, your system, your organization and even your entire state! In a nutshell the program works like this... The librarian representative for the group (System, State, etc.) chooses the prizes that will be offered to the individual libraries for distribution to the children in their summer reading programs. The librarian representative also provides JanWay with the Summer Reading Program theme and/or artwork that will be printed on the prize items (JanWay can also create art work to fit your theme for a nominal fee). A JanWay Representative will then provide the librarian representative with order forms to distribute to his/her group. The order forms are mailed or faxed directly to JanWay company. The orders are then shipped and billed from JanWay directly to the individual libraries.

Links Newspapers are a wonderful resource for genealogists, providing a history of our ancestors through birth, marriage and death announcements, obituaries, and other news stories pertaining to daily life in the community. Many of the surviving old newspaper issues have been microfilmed and/or abstracted, and you should check with your local genealogy and LDS libraries to see what is available and what may be ordered through interlibrary loan. Titles of published resources, where known, are shown below. There was, so far as I know, no newspaper published in old Marion County until The Marion Star began operations in 1852. Prior to that time, notices and articles pertaining to Marion residents would have appeared in various newspapers. In general, You'll also want to check church newspapers, such as the Southern Christian Advocate , neighboring county newspapers, and state-wide newspapers.

Library.Solution from TLC Emerges as Automation Software of Choice for Libraries Throughout South Carolina
INWOOD, WV, March 14, 2001TLC's automated system - the acclaimed Windows NT-based Library .Solution - has become the software of choice for all types of libraries throughout the state of South Carolina. South Carolina libraries that have embraced Library.Solution total 22 sites with over 200 workstations. One library system, Allendale-Hampton-Jasper Regional Library, recently installed 43 workstations in its five sites, with software, support and training. Another library, Harvin Clarendon County Library, will install Library.Solution this summer, upgrading from Gaylord's Galaxy System. The library is located in Manning in a 6800 square foot building constructed in 1984 entirely with community funds. The community's influence is seen in the unique architectural details, such as the large round window above the entrance, which reflects their motto: Key to the Past, Guide to the Present, Window to the Future The acceptance of Library.Solution by libraries in South Carolina comes at a time when the library industry and patrons worldwide have dramatically increased requirements for Web access to library resources.
