An Excellent Study of South Carolina's Secession
Stephen Channing ascribes the secessionist movement of 1860 in South Carolina to a "crisis of fear." South Carolinians, ever conscious of the black majority in their state, worried continuously about controlling the Negro in the absence of slavery. This fear, according to Channing, was crystallized into rife paranoia in the wake of John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry. Internal tensions, such as the perpetual contest between upcountry and lowcountry planters for primacy in state government, were eclipsed by this terrible fear. Moderates, who had opposed secession or, at the least, the secession of the Palmetto state on its own, essentially handed over the reins of leadership to the radicals--at the time, it appeared that the dire warnings long spewed forth by the Fire-eaters were becoming reality. Channing implies that Southern culture differed from that of the North to such a degree that secession was inevitable, and he contends that slavery was at the core of the mindset that animated the War Between the States. ... Excerpt: Kimbel Library is located in Conway, South Carolina, and is the academic library at Coastal Carolina University. It is named after William and Maude Kimbel, benefactors of Coastal Carolina University. When Coastal Carolina Junior College was established as a branch of the College of Charleston, arrangements were made for the Horry County Memorial Library to house reserves,and the junior college supplemented the public library and Conway High School library budgets. Catherine Lewis became the first Librarian at Coastal Carolina after a classroom was converted to a library. Lewis was under a tight budget, and increased the library collection mostly by taking donations and getting duplicate copies of books from the Library of Congress. After Coastal Carolina became a branch of the University of South Carolina in 1961, it moved from its location at Conway High School and into its current location, sitting on 184 acres (0.74 km) of land. Then, only the Singleton building existed, which housed classrooms, offices, and the library. A full time librarian could no longer be afforded, so Patricia Kleinhans was hired as a library assistant. After the 1967 SACS visit described the library as minimal, the college decided to allot 180,000 dollars to expand the building and allow for the expansion of the library to 27,000 volumes. In 1975 Coastal Carolina became a 4-year institution. The architectural firm of James, DuRant, James and Matthews designed the new Kimbel Library.
