    INTRODUCTION
Background: Independent from France in 1960, Senegal joined with The Gambia to form the nominal confederation of Senegambia in 1982. However, the envisaged integration of the two countries was never carried out, and the union was dissolved in 1989. Despite peace talks, a southern separatist group sporadically has clashed with government forces since 1982. Senegal has a long history of participating in international peacekeeping.

    General
Senegal is the most westerly state of West Africa. Composed primarily of a gently sloping, poorly dissected plain, Senegal is relatively flat with low relief. Its total land area is 196,192 km square. The northern border, which is shared with Mauritania, is defined by the Senegal River. The Faleme River delineates part of the eastern border with Mali; Guinea and Guinea-Bissau are Senegal's southern neighbors, and The Gambia forms an enclave of 11,295 km square along the Gambia River in the southern part of Senegal. As all of Senegal lies south of the 17 degree north latitude parallel well within the tropics temperatures are high throughout the year. Annual rainfall is almost entirely limited to the summer wet season, which lasts up to six months in the south and decreases to three months in the north. Like all areas near the northern limits of the Southwesterlies, Senegal suffers from extremely variable rainfall. Average rainfall varies from over 1500 mm in the southwest to just under 300 mm in the northwest. The rainfall trend in the last several decades shows a significant decline.
