Excerpt:Île de Gorée (i.e. "Gorée Island"; (French pronunciation: ) is one of the 19 communes d'arrondissement (i.e. "commune of arrondissement") of the city of Dakar, Senegal. It is a 0.182 square kilometres (45 acres) island located 2 kilometres (1.1 nmi; 1.2 mi) at sea from the main harbor of Dakar ( ). Its population as of 31 January 2005 official estimates is 1,056 inhabitants, giving a density of 5,802 inh. per km² (15,028 inh. per sq. mile), which is only half the average density of the city of Dakar. Gorée is both the smallest and the least populated of the 19 communes d'arrondissement of Dakar. Gorée is famous as a destination for people interested in the Atlantic slave trade. Butt, relatively few slaves were processed or transported from there. The more important centers for the slave trade from Senegal were north, at Saint-Louis, Senegal or to the south in the Gambia, at the mouths of major rivers for trade. Orange and Naussau fort at Gorée island. Coloured engraving, Holland, 17th centuryGorée is a small island 900 m in length and 350 m in width sheltered by the Cape Vert Peninsula. Now part of the city of Dakar, it was a minor port and site of European settlement along the coast. Being almost devoid of drinking water, the island was not settled before the arrival of Europeans. The Portuguese were the first to establish a presence on Gorée (c. 1450), where they built a small stone chapel and used land as a cemetery. Gorée is known as the location of the House of Slaves (French: ), built by an Afro-French Métis family about 17801784. The House of Slaves is one of the oldest houses on the island. It is now used as a tourist destination to show the horrors of the slave trade throughout the Atl...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1256117 ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Senegal," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Senegal in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Senegal when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Senegal, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An animated cultural-social portraiture
Senegal camouflaged face is unmasked.
Senegal comes to life in this book.
The depiction of the day by day life, social sceneries, traditions and mode de vie is refreshing.
Senegal is a forgotten or ignored destination for those who solely search for Tia Maria and the glitters of Acapulco.
Yet, Senegal natural beauty, silver beaches and forests are wonders on earth.
The book is written by a concerned and well-informed writer. He painted us vivid tableaus of Senegalese arts, literature and music.
However, he could not free himself from the stigma of colonialism. This should not diminish the quality of his book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This survey of uniquely Senegalese culture is involving and exciting
Advanced high school to college-level collections strong in African studies will welcome the specific volumes in 'Culture and Customs of Africa', of which CULTURE AND CUSTOMS OF SENEGAL is one. Product Description
The contributors of this volume adopt a multidisciplinary approach to the problematic of rural development in Senegal and in Africa. They outline the various rural development policies of several African states, and in this context consider the critical questions of the exodus of the rural population to the cities, migration, changing demography, and the challenges associated with economic decentralization. The studies illustrate how agrarian reforms and liberalization have been largely ineffective due to the socio-cultural constraints that are hindering rural development. As a whole, the book represents a comprehensive overview of strategies appropriate to achieving successful participatory development in rural Senegal. ... Read more

Product Description
Sufi City: Urban Design and Archetypes in Touba is a geographical study of the modern Muslim holy city of Touba in Senegal, capital of the Mouride Sufi order. Touba was founded in 1887 by a Sufi shaykh in a moment of mystic illumination. Since the death of the founder in 1927, the Mouride order has designed and built the entire city. Touba is named for Tûbâ, the "Tree of Paradise" of Islamic tradition. This archetypal tree articulates Islamic conceptions of righteous life on earth, divine judgment, and access to the Hereafter; the city of Touba actualizes this spiritual construct. Important aspects of its configuration, such as the vertical and horizontal alignment of its monumental central shrine complex, its radiating avenues and encircling ring roads, and the actual trees that mark its landscape relate directly to the archetypal tree of Sufi theosophy. The relationship between the spiritual archetype and its earthly actualization as a city is explained by recourse to Sufi methodology. The book employs a semiotic analysis of urban form, cartography, hermeneutics, field investigation and analysis of satellite imagery in order to relate contemporary urban design issues to overarching metaphysical concepts. Sufi City also explores the history of urban networks in Senegal since the emergence of autonomous Muslim towns in the seventeenth century. Finally, the layout of Senegal's modern Sufi cities is related to the monumental palaver trees that marked that country's historic settlements.Eric S. Ross is a cultural and urban geographer who holds a degree in Islamic Studies. Since 1998 he has been assistant professor of Geography at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco. Apart from research on Sufi orders and Muslim towns in Senegal, he has studied cultural tourism and urban planning in Morocco. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wide Window into Senegal and African Islam
This book represents a major contribution to the literature on Sufism in an African context. It addresses how the Murid movement interacted with modernity, Islam, Sufism and African traditions to create a world-accepting synthesis that finds physical form in the modern city of Touba -- an autonomous part of Senegal.I read this book early on, and I assure all readers that it is worth the investment and that it is one of those rare books that is hard to put down once one starts to read it. ... Product Description
The influence of traditional and religious groups on modern politics is a significant factor in the development of many countries. In this volume Lucy C. Behrman investigates the political role of religious organizations in the West African country of Senegal.

She introduces her study with analyses of the historical conditions under which the Muslim brotherhoods emerged as a political force and of the ways in which the pattern of relations was established. The Senegalese brotherhods are tightly-knit organizations, each led by a marabu, whose disciples depend on him in secular as well as religious matters. The political athority of the marabus grew out of the diintegration of the tribal system in the late nineteenth century, when the marabus replaced the nobles as political leaders. The French then reinforced the marabus' power by using them as intermediaries and by helping those who cooperated with the colonial regeme to defeat those who did not.

Upon independence in 1960, Senegalese politicians adopted the pattern of cooperation established by the French. Behrman, examining the present role of the brotherhoods, analyzes their inter-relationships as well as their relations with political parties, government officials, the government reform program, and modern Muslim reform groups. She reveals that Senegalese officials often defer to the opinion of the strongest marabus and that, in times of crisis or uncertainty with in the government party, the Union Progressiste Sénégalaise, they turn to the marabus for support. She also shows that, although the Muslim leaders occupy such a privileged position in Senegalese society, they do not actually control the government, which is secular and modern in form and is led by Western-educated men devoted to a program of industrialization and agricultural and social reform. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind
Muslim Brotherhoods and Politics in Senegal is truly one of a kind. What I liked most about the book was the subject matter and content. The book truly gives a view of how Islam, brotherhood, and politics look like in Senegal. What I liked least was that seemed like it was over simplifying the subject matter for non-Africans and non-Muslims. ... Read more
