I would suggest a couple of resources that may help you especially with the younger children. MENC has published Preschool Music Standards as well as Spotlight on Early Childhood Music. The Standards publication will guide you in designing appropriate lessons as well as suggesting methods of assessing understanding. In general, keep in mind that the younger students will one day be the elementary students you are comfortable teaching. For this year, you might select three or four concepts to focus on, break them down to their most elemental level of skill acheivement and understanding, and sequence lessons for the 3 and 4 year olds based on your diagnosis of their abilities at this time. Most of all, celebrate the joy of making music with your little charges! Please check in later in the year and let us know how you are doing. Betty

Rachel had some great ideas and getting the parents involved from the start is a geat idea.
I would also add that you need to show all involved why music is so important and the advantage students have from using music in their development in school. There are lots of studies out that have proven that when a student works in the fine arts they use both sides of their brains and that improves their learning abilites. Students learn faster when they learn things to music such as the ABC's , math lessons, etc. Check out the MENC websites for all sorts of Information on Pre-K music and look out for old copies of the MENC magazines and look at other state's music magazines and you will find all sorts of information on how important music at an early age is to all students. Good luck

There is much talk of lifelong learning throughout education today, and nowhere is this seen more so than in the many opportunities offered by the arts. At Rocky Mountain School of the Arts we have students of all ages and at every conceivable level; and as teachers we strive not only to teach them our particular art, but also to get to know each student as an individual, uniquely his own and to enjoy all of our students as very special people. We offer preschool classes for 2, 3, and 4-year-old students. The Musikgarten program is the foundation of our program, which we enhance with many of our own ideas. At RMSA we start students at many different ages; however, we have found 5 years old an ideal time, using many of the new methods available for young students. Those students who have been participating in the preschool music program will naturally come to the piano class as the next logical step. With students becoming involved in extracurricular activities at younger and younger ages, we feel it is also important to have music an important part of the young persons life as soon as possible. The primary method used for beginning students at RMSA is the MayRon Cole method. This method was written with class piano in mind, and we have taught beginning piano students in the class situation with good success. Many students find it encouraging to be with other students their own age, not only playing with each other, but also listening to one another, playing music games together and doing their written work together. The study of piano can be very lonely, and having piano partners in the beginning can be very positive.

Why Music? Arts Education Contributes to Early Childhood
    Brain Development
The early years of life are crucial to the development of vital connections within brain tissue which leads to later success in learning, researchers have found. Research that specifically links the study of music and other art forms to necessary brain development includes that of psychologist Frances Rauscher of the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh and physicist Gordon Shaw of the University of California at Irvine. They demonstrated that preschoolers who were given keyboard lessons and did group singing scored higher on tests measuring spatial reasoning, a skill used later in math, science and engineering. Most recently, they found that the music lessons resulted in higher spatial reasoning scores than equivalent instruction in computer skills. The Preschool Arts Enrichment Program of the Settlement Music School serves South Philadelphia children who live in a housing project across the street from the 87 year-old music school. A three year program evaluation revealed that children made gains in cognitive and language development above and beyond those evidenced in a control group of preschoolers without the arts-enriched curriculum. Working with a faculty of professional artists with training in early childhood education six to nine times a week, small groups of children visit the art studios to explore concepts that cut across the arts: pattern, change, repetition and extremes.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.Does Mozart's music build mental muscle?
According to psychologist-cellist Frances H. Rauscher, music can play a key role in mental development and school performance.
Rauscher will discuss her research findings on the so-called "Mozart Effect" and participate in several programs, Jan. 25-26, at Illinois Wesleyan University.
Rauschera Juilliard-trained concert cellist with a doctorate in psychology from Columbia Universitysays her studies show that " . . . music plays a crucial role in early childhood development," adding that experiments she conducted with a team of researchers prove "unequivocally that music lessons improve a child's performance in school."
However, Rauscher cautioned in an April 8, 1998 Education Week article: "One of the things we have to be careful about is jumping to conclusions that we don't have data on at all. I find that [the] 'Mozart makes you smarter' thing is quite a bit of a leap."
IWU Itinerary During Rauscher's two-day IWU visit, she will deliver a lecture, "The Musical Brain: Effects on Intelligence," on Monday, Jan. 25, at 4:30 p.m. in Westbrook Auditorium, Presser Hall (IWU's School of Music), 303 E.
