The North Jersey Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) will honor Bell Labs, the research and development arm of Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU), in a "Global Salute to Polymers" event Saturday, Nov. 7, capping seven days of National Chemistry Week activities sponsored by the North Jersey ACS. Polymers are natural or synthetic compounds made of long chains of atoms and include familiar plastics such as those used in milk bottles, upholstery, and protective coatings for copper wire and optical fiber.

    PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY OF POLYMERS
    This research group focuses upon the physical properties of polymers with specific application to electrophoresis, single-chain properties, microvalves, drag reduction, and surface modification. With a wide variety of architectures which can be synthesised into a macromolecule (star or dendrite, comb, bottlebrush, and block polymers), there exists a wide range of phase behaviour and properties to be explored in bulk melts and solution, as well as at surfaces. Our aim is to understand how molecular and structural features of the chains give rise to equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of the chains in a variety of conditions, as for example, when chains are end-tethered to a surface, sheared by fluid flow, squashed or pulled, or permeate through porous media.     Reactive Polymers in Analytical Chemistry
    The project described here was conceptualised in the late 1980, when the leader of this group realised that the efforts devoted to synthesis of specialized polymeric sorbents for use as tools in organic chemistry synthesis had resulted in materials that had a tremendous potential for also in analytical chemistry. On this page we will try to explain the rationale behind our work, which is quite unique in analytical chemistry. We will also try to outline what we have done in the past, to provide a picture of what we are doing right now, and give a hint of where we're heading in the future. Most of the reference links presented on this page lead to abstracts of peer reviewed publications, but we will like to advise you that some of the more recent works have not yet been the subject of peer review. These "submitted" and "in preparation" works are clearly indicated as such in each link.
    Research Objectives
    As the name of our group indicates, we deal with various forms of reactive polymeric materials which we try to implement in analytical chemistry applications. This work has proceeded through several stages and we are now approaching the final stage, where the fruits of our efforts hitherto will start paying off in new analytical tools.

    Almost all of the molecules we have studied so far have been relatively small with low molecular masses. But in nature and the world of synthetics, there are many substances with molecular masses in the thousands and hundred thousands containing hundreds or thousands of atoms. These molecules are called macromolecules
    Macromolecular substances are almost everywhere in nature and in synthetics. Synthetic macromolecules are examples of how chemists talk ordinary substances in nature, like coal, oil, air, and water, and make new materials with useful applications.
    Some macromolecules have more structural order than others. A polymer is a macromolecule in which all of the molecules have a small characteristic structural feature that repeats itself again and again. For example, here is a molecule of polyethylene: etc.-CH CH -CH CH -CH CH -CH CH -CH CH -etc. The strucutre has one structural unit, or monomer , that occurs repeatedlyethylene (ethene), CH CH . The structure of the polymer can therefore be represented by: -(CH CH n Where n can be several thousand. Polymers therefore do no consist of molecules identical in size but identical in kind.

    Technology of Manufacture and Processing of Polymers
    Aims of the Course
    The aim of the course is to give students an extensive background in chemistry, physical chemistry and chemical engineering principles of basic technological processes, properties of materials, macromolecular chemistry, manufacture, processing and aplications of polymers and methods of their structure and properties research.
    History of the Course
    The course was introduced at the University after World War II. It was then focused on macromolecular chemistry (by Prof. Otto Wichterle). The processing of polymers approach started to be applied in 1954 when Prof. Ivan Franta established the Department of Plastics and Rubber Technology. Fusing of this Department with the Department of Macromolecular Chemistry in 1971, the Department of Polymers was founded.
    Capabilities of Graduates
    The graduate will be qualified to work as a manager mainly in plastics and rubber industries but his or her qualifications will reach far beyond this scope (e.g.applications of polymeric materials, research and development).
