This 2nd edition is nearly a total rewrite.The fine structure of the first edition is greatly strengthened by the most recent advances in polymer science and crystal clear explanations of the important phenomena, especially in polymer physics. Worked exercises and challenging homework problems aid student learning.I have used all the major texts to teach introductory polymer science to seniors and also graduate students in chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry and biomedical engineering.Hiemenz and Lodge is the clearly the best. Classic text on polymer chemistry.Professors usually teach directly out of this book,and are excited to discover that it is back in print.Though "Polymer Chemistry" has not been updated since 1984, by no means is it outdated.Intended for senior-level undergraduate or beginning graduate level, this text covers introductory terminology, basic chain dynamics, basic rheologicalcharacterization, crystallization, thermodynamics of the glassy state, synthesis, reaction kinetics, and solution thermodynamics.

This book is written from the chemist's perspective and meant as an introduction.Chemists wishing to specialize in the organic synthesis aspect may also benefit from "Principles of Polymerization" by Odian.Materials engineers would likewise turn to a polymer physics text and keep Hiemenz as a reference.

While this book is indispensible as a student text, its format isn't conducive to leisurely reading.A professional wishing to brush-up on skills may benefit from other texts. ... Read more

This book is truly fantastic for people working on various aspects of polymers. Numbers of statements made by Flory in this book are still challenging. Remarkably good for those who want go for advance research in the filed of polymers/plastics. Not good for undergraduate students but should be used as a reference book in graduate degree. Person working on polymers knows nothing unless he/she read this book. Equations are tough and do not show from where they are originated, but fits well in real experiments with hardly exception at all.

A comprehensive guide to Polymers by the Nobel winning Flory himself!!! The book came out over half a century back, and hence understandably contains a lot of material that has been revised and is now understood differently. Still the book continues to be an essential read for anyone interested in polymer science, and knowledge of how Flory developed and demonstrated several key ideas used in everyday polymer science. Not recommended as a textbook for beginners, but as reference book for anyone planning to delve deeper into the subject!

This textbook is an elementary one foucsing on undergraduate study. So if you have already had background in polymer chemistry, this book might be easy for you. All in all, this is a helpful book to take you into the polymer world!

This is a good Polymer Chemistry Textbook.It is very informative.However, it isn't the most exciting read.The book is completely black and white, making it hard to read for extended periods of time.I would recommend this textbook for the quality of it's information.

Just wanted to mention two other introductory polymer books:

Polymers (Oxford Chemistry Primers) by David J. Walton & J. Phillip Lorimer. This book is just a brief intro to the field. Wouldn't use it for a full semester course.

The Chemistry of Polymers by J.W. Nicholson, 2nd edition, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, ISBN 0854045589. This one IS suitable for a 1 semester course.

Both are very good.

I was not able to fit polymer chem into my schedule at University, so I bought this book after graduating.This book is extremely organized and provides a lot of examples.The first of three sections provides a great introduction with the focus on definitions and structure.This is accomplished with very little reference to reactions.
The next two sections, which are titled vinyl and nonvinyl polymers respectively, address reaction mechanisms and kinetics. This layout allowed for smooth transitions between sections and concepts were introduced and reinforced smoothly.
The other thing I liked about it, is the continuous reinforcement of nomenclature...every time a name was used a corresponding structure was on that same page.

I'm really enjoying this book. It has a fair bit of practical advice on how to test polymers (more please!!!) and gives lots of facts about their structure, function and properties.

TGA (Thermo Gravimetric Analysis) and Raman spectra don't get much of a mention... but it's certainly seems to cover a lot of areas.

It was surprisingly hard to find a polymers book that covered most of the basic facts... despite asking for suggestions from a number of polymer chemists and searching online. This suggests that there are very few good books which meet this need.

From the undergrad perspective (my undergrad project is in polymers) this is a quite readable and very useful text. I'm just sorry that they don't teach us more about polymers at Uni:they've dropped polymers as an elective entirely (lecturer retired and not replaced).

Polymers are a very interesting area of chemistry... and this book certainly helps explain why.

Polymers: Chemistry and Physics of Modern Materials is a classic text that emphasizes structure/property relationships in polymers.The majority of the Third Edition is unchanged from the Second, except in two important ways:for the first time, problem sets are found after each chapter, which is a welcome addition over the earlier editions. Secondly, recent developments in polymer chemistry have been added:controlled architecture polymers, such as dendrimers and stars, along with metallocene chemistry, RAFT, ATRP, and other catalyst mediated chemistries.To make room for these developments, the content on liquid crystalline polyesters is combined with the chapter on crystallinity.Those seeking an in-depth coverage of viscoelasticity and ultimate mechanical properties, especially the latter, will need to supplement the coverage of these subjects using other texts and reference works.Publication under the CRC/Taylor and Francis Group makes this book more readily available in the U.S. than were previous editions.

This book is indeed full of errors. The kinetic sections were too unorganized and full of errors. The kinetics were frustrating enough without the formulas being wrong in the first place. Also, the book will derive multiple ways of solving for the same thing and bury what you really need to understand the concepts. The synthesis, nomenclature and production sections were okay at best. I will say this though, by having such a bad book I really learned a lot trying to sift out the information that was needed.

This book is an ok read, I actually bought it for one of my POlymer Chemistry Classes.It's not as dry as some textbooks i've read, but it is a bit confusing at times.The problems at the end of the chapters definitely help to see if you understand the concepts.

This book was in excellent condition.The contents are well written, concise yet easy to follow.The questions at the end of the chapters are pertinent and thought provoking without ambiguity.I was pleased that it shipped so fast, and look forward to finishing it as an indepent study.With the negative reviews I have read of the third edition, I am glad I opted for the second.

However this edition is full of ERRORS!An extremely frustrating book to try to learn out of.Did i do it incorrectly or is the equation printed there wrong or is the answere printed over there wrong, or maybe the question itself has a typo......who knows!My professor for this class was familiar with the first edition, but agreed to go with the second edition after we (the class) found it for $4 on here, then he had to go through and correct all the mistakes for us.

I used this book in conjunction with my Physical Chemistry book when we had a section on macromolecules. The coverage of material I needed for my class was applicable, readable, and spelled out in a way that made it easy for me to understand the subject matter. I have also read through the book outside of my Physical Chemistry class, and I believe it is on the more readable side. The text has a good supply of worked out examples in the text, but sometimes falls short on practice problems. Most of my experience with this book comes from using it in conjuction with other books - this book really shines at its explanation of the subject matter. ... Read more

I bought this book because it was the prescribed text for a class I took. It doesn't tell you anything in detail other than what you already know and keeps reffering to journal papers for every little thing. The organization of material is haphazard, and its very dificult to read through the list of names that keep appearing. Anyone who wants to understand Polymer chemistry, please look for some other book.This looks like the work of someone who has obtained a long list of papers on polymers and has written whatever he could gather from a glance at them, and did not even bother to proofread it once. ... I had used an earlier edition of this book in one of my courses years ago and found it to be full of errors.I should have examined this 5th edition more carefully before I chose it as the text for a course this year.I looked at the early chapters, and they seemed to be okay.Since I didn't have many other options at the time and the coverage was at the right level for my undergraduate polymer chemistry course, I went with it.The problem I have found is that the book is full of errors, poorly written, and very poorly edited.

For example, the mechanisms given in section 7.16 would not pass muster in any sophomore organic chemistry course.They omit steps, leave out electron pairs, have arrows pointing in the wrong direction, and show electron pairs moving to atoms that already have a full complement of electrons.

As an example of poor editing in section 7.6, aramids are defined in one paragraph and then defined again in the very next paragraph and then still again a few paragraphs later.It's a though these paragraphs were cut and pasted from someplace, but never read together.Kevlar is also called "Kevlor" in this section.

Some other errors include calling an alkoxide ion a "carbanion", making references to data in a table when the data isn't there, referencing the wrong table in an earlier chapter, and even referencing the wrong early chapter.

I cannot recommend this book for use in a classroom.Students tend to take what is written as the gospel, or they don't have the confidence to question something that looks wrong to them.There are other books that are much better for use in an undergraduate course in polymer chemistry.

This nominally comprehensive textbook on polymer chemistry is filled with information, but appears to be carelessly edited.Since this is the fifth edition, it may be that material added throughout the editions have been tacked on to existing material without trying to integrate it into the previous material.Many times, the same information is repeated in subsequent paragraphs with different words.I have found many typo, spelling and chemical formula errors in the text. ... The book is an excellent introduction to statistical polymer physics.
Its great strength is that it offers a mathematical treatment of polymer
physics with a minimum of mathematics i.e. only dimensional analysis and simple
ordinary differential equations. In addition, one needs to have an introductory
course in equilibrium statistical physics (statistical thermodynamics).

It is valuable to both academics and industrial practitioners, since it represents
a very complete picture of polymeric solutions, gels and networks
given with remarkable intuition. Certainly it does not go deep into
more advanced analytic (e.g. functional integral or numerical approaches),
but it is a necessary background to these fields.

The only negative aspect of this book has nothing to do with the authors,
but with OUP that produce such difficult to use book formats. I do not
understand why the book has to be so large in dimensions making any
handling difficult and awkward. I hope that soon is reissued in a more
compact and usable format that is made for the joy of reading.

My title tells everything. This book is one of the best one if you are new to the field. You need to know Calculus, Thermodynamics and Statistical physics and then read through the pages. Not too detailed nor too brief. I suggest the book to seniors and grad level students.

Polymer Physics by Michael Rubinstein and Raplh Colby is a fascinating introduction to the realm of polymer statics, dynamics and phase behavior. It embodies the depth of Flory's classic text on Principals of Polymer Chemistry, classic delight of de Gennes' Scaling concepts in Polymers and the rigor of Theory of Polymer Dynamics by Doi and Edwards. The authors manage to do this with a textbook authority and clarity, which definitely makes this book a definite buy for anyone interested in polymer physics.

The book has four main sections. The first part talks about the polymer statics: ideal and real chains and how their size and size dependent properties are characterized. Then comes thermodynamics of polymer blends and solutions, which includes a discussion on polymer brushes and adsorption of chains. The authors devote the third section to networks and gels and this part includes a very thorough discussion of gelation, rubber elasticity and swelling. The last section is devoted to the polymer dyanmics, where chain models and polymer relaxation ideas are developed and discussed. The last two sections of the book cover topics which are of immense current interest, and have had original and critical contributions from the authors. This book describes some fundamentally important topics, carefully chosen, covering subjects from thermodynamics to molecular weight and its distribution effects. For help in self-education the book adopts a "Questions and Answers" format. The mathematical derivation of each equation is shown in detail.For further reading, some original references are also given.

Numerous physical properties of polymer solutions are known to be significantly different from those of low molecular weight solutions. The most probable explanation of this obvious discrepancy is the large molar volume ratio of solute to solvent together with the large number of consecutive segments that constitute each single molecule of the polymer chains present as solute. Thorough understanding of the physical chemistry of polymer solutions requires some prior mathematical background in its students. In the original literature, detailed mathematical derivations of the equations are universally omitted for the sake of space-saving and simplicity. In textbooks of polymer science only extremely rough schemes of the theories and then the final equations are shown. As a consequence, the student cannot learn, unaided, the details of the theory in which he or she is interested from the existing textbooks; however, without a full understanding of the theory, one cannot analyze actual experimental data to obtain more basic and realistic physical quantities. In particular, if one intends to apply the theories in industry, accurate understanding and ability to modify the theory are essential.

I have been acquainted with this book since 15 years ago.I have taught this book for 8 years in undergraduate courses . It is the only book in polymer chemistry which has nearly all the topics relating to polymer chemistry both for beginners and also for advanced level readers .Even though it is old it has many subjects all together that can not be found in another book .I think such topics as engineering subjects and kinetics and also molecular weight equations should be explained more to be more understandable to all andthis is the main disadvantages of the book .
