Pethrick and Dr. M.J. Dufton Aim to introduce the basic chemical structures and synthesis of the major polymer types, to show their potential for chemical and functional diversity, and to relate their properties to the fundamentals of chemistry and stereochemistry. This class provides the foundations for fourth year classes in polymer chemistry, biological/medicinal chemistry and forensic science. Learning Outcomes (Biopolymers Section) To learn the full structures of natural polymeric molecules (nucleic acids, proteins and carbohydrates) and their component monomers (nucleotides, amino acids and monosaccharides. To learn the stereochemical characteristics of the monomers and how their linkages restrict the conformational possibilities of the polymeric chains. To learn how diversity of polymer conformation and stabilisation within each structural class leads to the performance of highly contrasting functional roles in living organisms (e.g.DNA versus RNA, fibrous proteins versus enzymes, starches versus cotton). Learning Outcomes (Polymers Section) The student should recognise the importance of molar mass, chemical structure and topography in determining the nature of the polymeric state.

The Program
Students study the chemistry of polymers and learn about the impact of polymers from perspectives of science, technology, and society. Many chemistry textbooks and laboratory manuals have very little material dealing with polymers. Public domain printed materials and an Apple II Computer Program are copied by the local school for use by students in that school. A test covers the written objectives of the polymer unit. Teachers have additional printed materials: a list of the top 50 chemicals, teaching suggestions, answers to "Introduction to Polymerization - Computer Worksheet," ten pages of answers to student question sheets, masters to make seven overhead projector transparencies, detailed directions for five or more teacher demonstrations, and a bibliography of sources and resources.

Course status: Advanced laboratory for students specializing in physical chemistry. Course description: Determination of electropolymerisation kinetics. Mechanism op electrodeposition of polymers. Studies of redox reaction of conducting polymers. Electrochromism. Application of EPR to the determination of the number of electrons involved in electrochemical reactions of conducting polymers. Determination of molecular structure of conducting polymers. Use of electrochemical methods, electrochemical quartz microbalance, UV/VIS, IR and Raman spectroscopy (both in situ and ex situ) in studies of conducting polymers. Course objectives: The student should get acquainted with conducting polymers and be able to carry out basic investigation on the topic. She/he should be able to carry out experiments using techniques employed during the course. Level: 4th year of M.Sc. curriculum.

Chemistry at the Polymer IRC
The Chemistry laboratory is a general purpose sample preparation laboratory serving the whole of the Physics Department. The laboratory is equipped with three fume cupboards, dry box, vacuum ovens and lines, and the usual paraphernalia associated with normal chemical preparations. Capable of all sample preparations from simple cleaning to complex polymeric synthesis. Frequently polymer preparations involve the use of hazardous solvents and have to be done in a fume cupboard. The dry box is presently being used for the preparation of polymer electrolytes and lithium rechargeable batteries.
If more information is required about use of the chemistry lab then please contact Dr. H. Hubbard for details.
