PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (NWSB) Hawaiian schools food services director plans to incorporate what he learned about food service aboard USS Independence (CV 62) into public school cafeterias in the state. "The trip there was way beyond my expectations," said Gene Kaneshiro, who is responsible for setting up menus and other dietary plans for approximately 185,000 students in the Hawaii public school system. "The Navy went beyond the call to accommodate me. "I expected to meet the ship pier side," Kaneshiro said. "I never expected to have them fly me out there, but landing on the flight deck was an experience." Independence , forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, was in Hawaiian waters for the Rim of the Pacific 96 exercise this summer. Kaneshiro said he wants to establish standardized nutrition labels for all foods on the serving line in their schools. All shore and shipboard galleys use nutrition labels to inform Sailors of the amount of cholesterol, fat and calories in each portion of food. "By doing something similar in our cafeterias, the students will become aware of what's in the various foods we're feeding them," he said. "It will also show the faculty and parents that we're trying to meet the dietary guidelines that we're under.

The Hawaii McGruff Crime Prevention Campaign was established in 1986 to instill the concept of crime prevention and safety at an early age among the state's youngsters. As a national symbol of crime prevention, McGruff has significantly influenced and raised the awareness of Hawaii's children on the dangers of drugs and crime. McGruff's message has gone beyond the classroom to reach the community at large. His message of drug and crime prevention has been heard by thousands of children and adults alike at community events. Through safety tips and the distribution of drug and crime prevention materials (educational brochures, coloring books, etc.), we hope to reach the whole community. Gov. Ben Cayetano is proposing spending the bulk of his proposed $1 billion emergency construction budget on education, ranging from fixing classrooms to building the University of Hawaii-West Oahu campus. In total, Cayetano is asking the Legislature for authority to spend $978.8 million more for construction projects. The Cayetano administration estimates the interest on the bonds for the extra $1 billion will be about $85 million, according to Sen. Sam Slom (R, Hawaii Kai). Yesterday, Cayetano said he wants the Legislature to move because the state is in a financial crisis and needs the help. "We want to keep the jobs going," Cayetano said. In a list of proposed projects distributed to legislators this week and made available to the Star-Bulletin are $167 million in projects for the Department of Accounting and General Services. They include $130 million in small improvements to public schools across the state.

Review of Charter School Legislation Provisions Related to Students with Disabilities, September 1998
General Legislative Provisions
This first part of the review examines statutory provisions that have implications for, but do not necessarily address directly, students with disabilities or special education. Various provisions in state statutes grant charter schools varying levels of authority to govern themselves and to make decisions regarding the operation of the schools, including decisions related to personnel, curriculum, and expenditures. The extent of a charter school's operational autonomy will have an impact on how special education programs are implemented in these schools. As described in the following paragraphs, statutory provisions that give higher levels of autonomy include ones that allow or require charter schools to (1) operate independent from local school districts, (2) make their own personnel decisions, (3) be exempt from state and district education laws and regulations, (4) assume liability for their actions, and (5) receive their funding directly from the state. General Information
Home page Calendar Announcements Staff Bios ... Handbook Hawai`i's premier children's chorus, Hawai'i Youth Opera Chorus, formerly the Honolulu Children's Opera Chorus, is the longest running and largest youth chorus in Hawai`i. Since 1961, HYOC has provided singers for all Hawaii Opera Theatre productions requiring the participation of children. Their outstanding performances under Nola A. Nahulu , musical director of twelve years, have been of such high caliber that HYOC has been invited to perform nationally, internationally, and throughout the State of Hawai`i. HYOC received the Na Hoku Hanohano (Star of Distinction) award for Religious Album of the Year in 1993. Originally, HYOC existed to provide children parts in opera productions, but over time HYOC grew in stature and developed its own repertoire. Currently, there are over 160 members ranging in age from 5 - 18. The chorus is hosted and is currently housed by the Kawaiaha'o Church. The seven vocal ensembles are comprised of children from 42 public schools and 22 private schools. Today our members represent communities throughout O`ahu. HYOC's musical repertoire encompasses Western European, sacred, secular, Hawaiian, and other ethnic music. Our Mission It is the mission of HYOC to nurture, foster, and develop the performing arts primarily through the medium of choral music, and to serve as an educational and artistic resource for the State of Hawai`i. The Hawai`i Youth Opera Chorus accepts children with vocal potential and a genuine desire to sing in a choral group. HYOC develops their talents through vocal technique, ear training, sight singing, music theory and history.
