The Right Pet for You
When choosing your kitten it is advisable to note whether Ferrets are lively, playful and easily tamed, but they need a lot of space and can be expensive to feed. They can also inflict severe bites and emit a strong musky smell. Before getting any pet, you should think very hard about whether you can provide everything it needs.
What do Ferrets need?
Companionship - to be with other ferrets and to have human company. A diet of raw, fresh meat twice a day. Any uneaten food must be removed daily. A constant supply of fresh, clean drinking water in a drip feed bottle with a metal spout. A large home that is kept up off the ground, in an open shed or indoor area out of direct sunlight and strong winds. Separate areas inside their home.

Nutrition Commercially available ferret ration is available in pet stores in those states that ferrets are legally kept as pets. If ferret ration is not available in your area, a high quality dry cat food can be substituted, but be sure to supplement it with liver or canned meats every other day or so. Ferrets like to nibble. The prefer six to eight small meals as day, as opposed to one larger meal, so allow free access to food and water throughout the day. Choose weighted dishes to avoid spilling. Ferrets have a propensity for hairballs. Hairball laxatives designed for cats can be added to the diet, but use only half the recommended dosage for cats. Housing Some folks allow their ferrets free run of the place. I do not recommend this as they can cause a lot of damage, to your home and to themselves. Of course, free run under supervision is encouraged, but I suggest you cage your pet while your out or sleeping. Wire cages of various sizes are readily available at most pet stores. Naturally, the bigger the better. Choose one with a smooth floor as wire mesh is hard on the feet. A small box or hide-a-way should be placed in the corner for sleeping and hiding. A blanket to cuddle up in will make your ferret a happypet, and looks awfully cute too. Place a litter pan at the corner of the cage, opposite his food and water dish and change daily.

Mice, Rats, Gerbills and Hamsters. These little sweeties are often chosen as pets for the first time animal guardian because they are relatively low maintenace and have gentle dispositions. Nutrition Commercial rodent pellets are available for Gerbils and Hamsters at pet stores. All four creatures have similar diets so if you have a rat, gerbil pellets are fine. For a more palatable diet, supplement the pellets with diced fruit and seeds, but don’t overdo it. These little guys have habit of filling up on the yummy stuff and ignoring the pellets, and eating that way will not satisfy their daily nutritional needs. Housing As the popularity of keeping small animals increases, more and more cages designed for them are appearing in pet stores all over. But, I recommend a glass aquarium with a screen cover. Ferrets - More like a cat than a rodent when it comes to care and maintenance.
