Product Description
A new twist on the old pet care books! These delightful books will help beginning readers reach informed decisions as to whether an animal would make an acceptable pet. Not all the animals covered in the series are suitable for every family. Each title provides simplified technical info about the species, including how the animal lives in the wild, how big it will get, and how long it lives. It also provides details on care of the pet, such as space requirements, how and what to feed it, health care, and handling. Once readers understand whether the animal would make a good pet, they are prepared to try to convince their parents they can . . . care for the pet. Ferrets are fun, friendly family pets but they take a lot of work. They love to play, and they want to spend every waking moment of their days playing with you. They steal things when you re not looking and dig into whatever they can. They also jump, twist, and even dance. With this book, you can learn all about the special needs of these long and lanky pets and find out if they are the best pet for you and if you are the best owner for them. Arm yourself with the facts, and then you can show your parents just how prepared you are! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ferrets ( Animal Planet Pet Care Library )
This book is a must read for anyone who is considering acquiring a ferret, or who has recently acquired a ferret and has questions about how to care for, feed, and keep their ferret safe. There is a lot of information crammed in this small book.My family was new to Ferrets when we purchased this book and it has really helped us become comfortable with our new ferret and how to keep him happy and healthy.

Great product! I recieved it quickly! It has everything you need to know about ferrets.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better "small" ferret books.
Ferrets are my kind of people. This is my kind of ferret book. It puts lots of good information for the new and experienced ferret owner. It is well organized and presents the information in an entertaining manner. Just a plain good read for a ferret lover and especially good for the person considering sharing their life with a ferret friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST PET OWNER'S BOOKS AVAILABLE ON FERRETS
Having been involved with keeping ferrets as pets, raising ferrets, watching ferrets, giving ferret advice and simply admiring ferrets for more years than I care to mention, I can truthfully say that this is one of the best overall, generally useful and most informative book for ferret owners that I have read.It is geared to the individual who has one or more ferrets for pets.

The Animal Planet Pet Care Library is a good, all around series and this little book is no exception. It covers, in some detail, the care, feeding, handling, socialization, housing, medical care and maintenance of these wonderful little animals.

The author does go into a nicely done natural history of ferrets and gives us a wonderful section of description including color variations, verbal communication and body language (very important if you want the most enjoyment out of your pet).I particularly liked the section of ferret physiology and the section giving advice on picking and choosing a veterinarian for your animal. The book is filled with wonderful photographs which are a delight within themselves. The text is concise, not too technical, and completely readable.

For the pet owner, I cannot think of a better book on the subject. There are many, many books on the subject of ferrets out there (goodness knows I have most of them), but this one is certainly at the top of the heap as far as usability goes and certainly in that position for the pet owner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent: Ferrets 101
Although I liked the companion book (Training Your Pet Ferret) more, this is an excellent concise guide for someone who knows nothing about ferrets. This is not a book for anyone who has even a working knowledge about ferretbehavior. But then again I haven't found a good guide yet that goes indepth into ferret matters for those of us who know the basics about them, but would like to know more.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great either
While some of the information is unique to this book (like the part about ferret sounds and body language) there are some alarming errors (a ferret should NEVER be housed in an aquarium!).Use it as an additionalreference, but not your primary one.You should have several differentsources to refer to anyway.

1-0 out of 5 stars 10 Years Hardly Made Any Difference
There are many more up-to-date reference books on the Domestic Pet Ferret. It's an add to my Ferret book collection only. I recommend researching all books available before deciding to be owned by Ferrets.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't buy this book, you may hurt your Ferret!
As a keeper of Ferrets here in England I was appalled when I was given this book as a present for Christmas 98'. There are a number of really quite harmful and cruel elements to this book This could not be further from the truth. The Ferret is a highly socialanimal and they should really be kept in a minimum of threes, two femalesand a male.

De-scenting. This is a highly controversial pracn integral part of theanimals communication system and to remove them just for the delicatenostrils of the owner is really very unfair on the animal.

To say thatFerrets release odour when in fear of their life is quite innaccurate.Ferrets release an odour when they are excited, prior to eating, beforehunting or going for a walk.

Within the book the subject of housing theFerret is not covered at all satisfatorily, to suggest that a Ferret needsa cage of only 10 inches in height is cruel. Ferrets are climbers by ntaureand mine reguarly climb the seven feet to the top of their 6 foot by 6 footcourt. There is scant reference to the correct size and positioning of anoutdoor court and cub.

I could go on, but frankly the 1000 word limit israpidly running out. But for those die hards amongst you who rate thisbook, just refer to the "My tip" on page 23, advising the reader"never to strike the Ferret's body" This lady must really havebeen struggling for something to write if she thinks that the averageFerret loving reader would hit such a small animal!

The picture of the"White-footed butterscotch" on page 41 is further testament tothis authors own ineptitude, either if this Ferret is her own or thepicture is from a library, it should never have been used in a referencebook. The poor animal's nails are clearly too long and should have beentrimmed, if they grow much further they'll grow back under themselves! PoorFerret.

One thing this "guide" is not is complete!

In short, don't waste your money. There has to be a much better guide out theresomwhere! By the way, the only reason I gave this book one star is becausethe review software won't let you choose none! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ferret book
I don't have a ferret, but this book taught me a lot about them that I didn't realize such as they need shots and are subject to various laws. Also, if your ferret bites someone it might be put down.It is clear from reading the book that keeping a ferret is more like having a cat than an easier care small animal, such as a guinea pig.

As for the ferret stalking the chicken picture, it says right in the book that the ferret was wearing a leash which was edited-out with graphics

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives good information to new ferret owners

Product Description
Nothing can replace home as the best and least-traumatic place to leave a dog when an owner goes away. And leaving a dog at home requires hiring a dog sitter to either stay at the house or come in periodically to care for them. This handbook is designed to offer owners peace of mind by informing the dog sitter about the peculiarities of a dog and its daily requirements, while also giving valuable information about general pet care. The easy-to-use handbook format lets the owner fill in appropriate information about their dog's food, walking schedule, toys, rules, favorite chair, medication, etc. The text of the book consists of an orientation on general dog behavior; tips on dealing with behavior problems; and what to do in case of an emergency. There is also a valuable section on how to give a dog medication, while also allowing the owner to write in specific directions, and a section on emergency medical care for dogs. This handbook minimizes a pet's stress when it is left in another's care, and gives owners peace-of-mind as their personal instructions and advise are clearly outlined and easy to follow. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Wrong point of view?
I read some of the other's reviews of this book. And it apparently was not what they were looking for. I can't understand why that is. What could be more important than a book that details your customer's fears regarding your services? Its a treasure trove of ideas for shaping your business and laser targeting your USP.

2-0 out of 5 stars Comforting to owner, useless to pet sitter
This small book was written to comfort owners.Thinking about having a sitter come into your house to care for your pets is a stressful thought - what if they forget something? What if they break/steal something? What if they forget to come? But basically if your pet sitter isn't asking for all this information in this book on his/her own without the book then you are in grave trouble.

Professional sitters cost more than the "kid down the street" because they DON'T forget to come, they DON'T steal, and they DO know what questions to ask so that nothing is forgotten (and if there is an confusion, they know just who to contact to fix it with no delay). They also don't get bored around the 2nd or 3rd day and decide not to show up anymore (and lie about it).

Your sitter is not going to read this book if you leave it for them.Unless it is a professional, and then they will just read it to laugh at how usless it is.Do you really want your sitter spending his time reading instead of playing with your pets?If you want, buy this book so you know what the pet sitter will ask before they arrive (and to weed out any fly-by-night bad ones). Then hire a true professional.Plan to spend 60-90 minutes with the pet sitter answering his/her questions at the Meet and Greet. And if you are still not feeling near "worry-free", turn down that sitter andchoose another.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book to leave with your sitter
I think this book included a lot of information the sitter should know that I had not yet thought of.I think it is good for someone who is pet sitting the way they would baby sit, not as a pet sitting service, but sitting occasionally, which is how many people do sit. There are many books out there for "professional" pet sitters who have a pet sitting business, but nothing else for those who occasionally sit.I feel this book caters to those people where none others do.And it's a helpful little book for anyone to read who is watching your pet.I would recommend it if you are having someone come to watch your pet, or for someone who is going to watch someone's pet and can offer it as a gift to the owner.Handy and helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Note from a Pet Sitter
If your pet sitter isn't asking about your pets needs and behaviors before agreeing to care for your pet, you're in trouble. As a pet sitter, having a client hand me their Dog Sitter's Handbook would be useless. Not only do I not have the time to read it, but I would already have asked all of these questions of the owner directly. The only use I can see to this book is if you are hiring a "free" pet sitter such as a neighbor or friend.Even so, it would be a lot easier for them if you wrote everything concisely on a single sheet of paper. And don't forget emergency phone numbers and directions to your vets office.

4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful and thoughtful book to leave for your Dog Sitter
My only complaint with this little book (and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5) is that it is too small for the purpose. The information provided is excellent and would help a Dog Sitter tremendously, especially the fill-in-the-blank pages that really personalize this book. This great book deserves to be much larger in format instead of a super small 'gifty' size...but it's still no reason not to purchase this book and use it over and over again!I have dog-sat in the past and wished I had a little something to go on.This is just the ticket!I do recommend it highly...just don't expect a full size 'handbook' as the title indicates. ...
