Cycling Cycling is an exciting sport that tones muscles and strengthens the cardiovascular system. It is also an enjoyable recreational activity that offers fun and relaxation and provides an inexpensive form of transportation. Cycling was inaugurated at the 1987 Special Olympics World Games while it was still considered a demonstration sport. Twenty-one athletes participated and proved their skill and ability. One year later, cycling was adopted as an official Special Olympics sport. Today, approximately 5,285 athletes from 59 Special Olympics Programs around the globe participate in cycling. Events offered range from the 500M Time Trial to 10K Time Trials to the 5K Road Race to the 40K Road Race. WORLD GAMES HISTORY
At the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games in North Carolina, USA, 160 athletes from 23 countries competed in cycling. HIGHLIGHTS
Ten Special Olympics athletes spent a day at the White House in August 2001 where three-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong was the guest of honor of President George W. Bush. In the East Room of the White House, Bush honored 29-year-old Armstrong, who overcame testicular cancer to win the bicycle race three times in a row. Bush praised Armstrong for successfully battling cancer, then going on to win what he said was perhaps the most physically demanding event in sports. Bush pointed to Armstrong as an example of how to confront challenges.
Special Olympics cycling has had the support of many internationally recognized cyclists. For example, Ned Overend has attended competitions and, at the 1991 Special Olympics World Summer Games, Greg LeMond presented Special Olympics athletes with signed jerseys.

By Compiled from Times wires Terrorist threat downplayed SYDNEY, Australia Officials reassured the world Saturday that next month's Olympics are safe from terrorist attack after a possible plot against the country's only nuclear reactor was exposed. In the first major security scare for the Games, New Zealand police in March discovered evidence of a possible plan to attack the reactor, in suburban Sydney. The information was found during an operation in Auckland against a suspected organized crime ring with links to Afghanistan. Australian officials were quick to say there was no direct evidence of a terrorist threat. New Zealand Foreign Minister Phil Goff also downplayed any threat: "There is nothing that suggests there is a threat on the ground other than somebody had marked the reactor and access to it in a notebook." The Australians expressed confidence in the Games' massive security operation, headed by the New South Wales state police and including Australian military forces and international intelligence services. International Olympic Committee chairman Juan Antonio Samaranch said he was not worried.

Competitive Sports In Spain and the 1992 Olympics.
The development of sports at a primary level of education, with the help of the State and the Autonomous Communities, has resulted in a spectacular advance in competitive sports in Spain. Even the fact that the 1992 Olympics were held in Spain and the medals were won by Spaniards demonstrate the recognition of this new sports' potential and the support it has been given. Spanish sports have produced such figures of international repute as Pedro Delgado and Miguel Indurain in cycling, Angel Niego in motorcycle racing, Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya in motor car rallies, the Sanchez Vicario family and Sergi Bruguera in tennis, Severiano Ballestero in golf, etc. The enumeration would be incomplete if we failed to mention Spain's presence in the many international competitions. Athletism motor racing, basketball, handball, billards, cycling, aerial sports, winter sports, water skiiing, football, gymnastics, hoseback riding, karate, motorcycle racing, motor boat racing, jai alai, swimming, fishing, canoeing, rowing, tae-kwon-do, tennis, sailing, rifle shooting are some of the sports in which Spain stands out in the world championships. In October 1990, the Sports Law was pased which defined the characteristics of professional and amateur sports and established a legal framework for professional clubs.
