Product Description

The remarkable biography of a 1948 Olympic cycling champion who became a swashbuckling fortune-hunter in Columbia. Restlessly vital and possessed of great physical strength, José Beyaert lived many lives. During the Second World War, he boxed and trafficked arms for the Resistance on his bicycle. After it, he became an international cyclist. In 1948, a mile from the end of the Olympic road race around Windsor Park, he broke away alone to take the gold medal and started an adventure that would last the rest of his life. A Tour de France rider in the sport's golden age, José was invited to open a new velodrome in Colombia, South America. He traveled, intending to stay a month. Instead, driven by his thirst for adventure, he stayed for 50 years, becoming by turns athlete, coach, businessman, emerald-trader, logger, smuggler, and perhaps even hired killer. Matt Rendell, who knew José Beyaert and met many of his family, friends, and associates, tells the fascinating story of an almost-forgotten sporting hero who, incapable of living by other people’s rules, lived his many lives on his own terms.

Product Description
The first and only guide to bicycling the national parks and wilderness areas of Oregon and Washington. Bicycling is becoming an ever-more popular option as some national parks are closing roads to cars. This complete adventure guide to the national parks of Oregon and Washington features 58 road and mountain bike rides through the parks' most spectacular natural areas. The stunning geographical diversity of Washington and Oregon is perfectly captured by their national parks and recreation areas, and the best way to explore these spectacular national treasures is to get out of your car and onto a bike. David Story has sought out routes of all levels and lengths for both road bikes and mountain bikes in this new guide. From the arid sagebrush landscape of John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, to the glaciers capping Mount Rainier National Park, to the volcanic legacy of Crater Lake, to the temperate rain forest of Olympic National Park, the national public lands of the Pacific Northwest offer stunning views, invigorating air, and a mix of easy to strenuous rides. These riding opportunities can only improve with time, as the parks continue to restrict automobile use to better preserve and protect their natural beauty. Each of the 58 ride descriptions include a detailed map, tour directions, information about the trail or road surface, sights along the way, and the length and difficulty of the ride. In addition, a trip-planning appendix for each park tells you where to stay or camp, do your laundry, eat, buy supplies, and repair or rent a bike. 58 rides are described and mapped in detail. Part of a new national series: Bicycling America's National Parks. Heavily illustrated: Includes 25 professional color photographs of the parks, 75 black and white photographs, and 60 maps. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Unique and Broad, though Slightly Incomplete Guidebook.
Story's first guidebook in the 'Bicycling America's National Parks' series (California) is an excellent all-around cycling guide (and general guidebook) for the Golden State. It's concise, thorough, and balanced, presented in personable, witty language. He includes a variety of road and mountain bike routes for virtually every riding level. His lodging, shopping, and especially dining suggestions are first rate.It includes almost all the information a would-be tourist (as I was) needs for a bicycling trip to CA.Story also throws in some nice tidbits about natural and cultural history of each park, as well as description of fauna and flora (plants and animals), and worthwhile less-known attractions.

This guide from Story features most of the same attributes as his previous guide. He includes a variety of rides that highlight the nearly infinite geographical and ecological diversity of Oregon and Washington.Once again, he includes abundant, but concise information and recommendations related to lodging and related travel info, presented in personable language (though he's not as consisently funny). As before, he provides a nice natural and historical background, serving to not just describe, but introduce the reader to each park (or recreational area).

There is one minor shortcoming, relative to Story's National Parks/California book. That guide contained abundant supplemental information related to dining and other special attractions within or near each park. While this guidebook has some info. of that nature, it seems much more sparse. This might be because many trails in Oregon and Washington are in fairly rural areas far from any major (or even minor) population center. This considered, this guidebook still doesn't seem as complete as his California edition, which provided that reader with virtually everything we'd need to plan our trip. This isn't to say this guide is poor, it just doesn't quite match up to the standards of Story's previous guide.Once again, it would be helpful if Story included a general map of each park (this was the only minor problem I had with his CA edition).

Even if it doesn't quite measure up to Story's California guide, Oregon/Washington is still far superior to most other cycling guidebooks available (even allowing for it's uniqueness). It's an indespensible tool for anyone planning a cycling trip to or near the national parks/recreational areas of Oregon and Washington. It's a perfect starting point, though you might want to research the areas more before heading out.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb addition to a great series
I purchased this book after reading a glowing review of it from the San Francisco Chronicle. I'm very glad I purchased it. This latest addition to the Bicycling America's National Parks series is informative, helpful, and truly captures the ambience of the different national parks it covers. It's not just national parks, but national recreation areas, and national monuments too, and you really get a sense of where the great bicycling opportunities are in places that also have national-caliber scenery and attractions. After reading the book, I'm definitely planning on using it for a Hells Canyon National Recreation Area trip later this summer. The chapters on Crater Lake, Olympic National Park, and Mount Saint Helens totally appealed to me, cause I've been to those places and wondered about biking there. The author does a great job of showing that the myth that you can't ride offroad in national parks is just that-- a myth.(All the rides are legal, though some do take place just outside park boundaries.) The book presents everything you need to know in a clear, often funny way. The pictures are great too. That's about all I ask from a guidebook. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too basic!
Worst book ever bought. Way too basic! Went through it all in less than 30 min.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but many poor explanations

I ride fairly regularly and I bought this book in order to get a more in-depth knowledge of the sport. I am also looking to purchase a new road bike and wanted to learn about what's available and what to look for on a bike.

This book has a good amount of information, but the author tends to explain things poorly when a simple diagram or picture would do a much better job. Because of that, I found this book somewhat tedious to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise book on road cycling and racing
I got back into road biking about 3 years ago to lower my blood pressure and get some stress relief. The last two years I ventured into longer rides (50, 65, 100 miles).I could complete the rides, but was feeling ... well slow, compared with the other riders. This book has taught me more about my bike and some fundamental skills. The best sections in my mind are those on exercise physiology, training, and nutrition. They quickly gave me some clue how to train, and why certain things were needed.Especially good is that the book is quite small and concise.I could read and get a lot of value from it in the first week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for new road cyclists
I am new to road cycling, and this was the perfect book to get me going. It answers many of the questions I was embarrassed to ask others, and is something I keep referring to as I gain more experience.I recommend it to all new cyclists.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overall Coverage for Road Cycling

14. Blood Sports The inside dope on drugs in sport
by Robin Parisotto
Kindle Edition: Pages (2010-06-10)

Asin: B003RCJWCA

Editorial Review

Product Description
Drugs in sport have been around since the Ancient Olympics,
but in the last few decades the cheats have become very sophisticated and
lately have been taking substances that occur naturally in the body; things
that are supposed to be there anyway. And if a little bit works then maybe
a little bit more is better, like a little bit more blood because with more
blood comes more oxygen and with more oxygen they can run faster for
longer. But like any drug, too much of a good thing can be dangerous and
the many mysterious deaths of professional cyclists (more than 30) since
1987, put blood doping in the spotlight instead of steroids. Too much
blood, it seemed was very dangerous, even fatal.

But how did the blood doping method fly under the radar for decades before
anyone did anything about it? What was done and what impact has this had on
the cheats behaviour for they were not about to give up their precious
source of success, their blood. How was it that Lance Armstrong who won seven Tour de France races was able to beat proven blood dopers? What did he have that others did not? Many have asked the same question and Blood Sports answers some of the many questions surrounding Armstrongs superhuman feats. And Armstrong himself may now need to answer some of those questions in light of allegations made by Floyd Landis.

Blood Sports is a story which charts the journey of blood doping and how
the challenge was met by the drug police head-on. Blood doping had
rudimentary beginnings with the first human to animal blood transfusion in
1666 culminating in 250 years of medical research which eventually led to
the first human-to-human blood transfusion in 1908. The rest they say is
history but in the case of blood doping its history repeating itself with
the cheats 'harvesting' their own blood to be poured into their body just
before competing to give them the edge. And the best thing about it, is
that the blood is supposed to be in the body. The cheats never new it
though but they were up against a new breed of drugs police, those with a
nose for working out what was natural blood and what was artificial. The
blood doping cheats were beaten or so we thought.

But just as this battle appears to have been won there is another looming.
The means to artificially enhance the body by means of genetic technology.
The sporting world is threatened by something that may well be out of the
reach of the drug police no matter how smart they may be. The battle may
therefore never be won.

Blood Sports will bring to you where and how blood doping began, who
cheated, who died, who gained financially and politically, how it seemed to
be beaten and how the testers are confronted not only by the cheats
ingenious doping ways but how beuracracies can get in the way to stymie
their efforts.

Blood Sports is a book full of revelations, shocks, surprises, twists and
turns written for a general audience.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware, Books Is Outdated
I don't even know why they still sell this book.Almost half the rides are either closed to mountain bikers or have since been turned into sub-developments and no longer exist. This book is actually quite depressing. It was sad thumbing through the pages remembering all the great trails that used to exist that don't anymore due to development and/or land usage disputes.Basically, if you buy this book, you will have to call your local bike shop to confirm whether or not the trail still exists or if it has been modified...so, what's the point?

4-0 out of 5 stars This book has 60 rides, about half are worth riding.
Be careful if you buy this book.It is 10 years old and many of the trails have been closed. If you are looking for a place to start in Washington it covers almost the entire state. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I was there
David Prouty hit real close to the bone in this treatise on amateur sports. I was a fly on the wall for nearly all of this and know all of the personalities first hand. He was basically the leader of chlldren all playing at their own version of Lord of the Flies. The egos, power struggles and inflated levels of self importance that many of the people he had to deal with would even be beyond the capabilities of a Jack Welch to master. The Amazon review at the lead of this is indeed totally inaccurate. Mr. Prouty was an honest, talented, imaginative and flexible leader with very strong principles that only bent when they needed even more flexibility just to keep peace amongst the "children."

5-0 out of 5 stars In Spite of US
The review printed by Amazon that accompanies the advert for the book is clearly written by someone who has never worked in the amateur sports arena as Dave did. There are many of us who work as paid staff or as a professional/volunteer (someone who does not get paid but is expected to perform as if he/she did and maintain another career and family life at the same time)in a similar role to that of Dave with members of a Governing Body whose motives are either self preservation because it looks good on a CV or who, in spite of their considerable talents, spend their time fighting for their personal little issues or simply micro-manage. The book should be compulsary reading for anyone wanting to join or be elected to a sports NGB or who is simply going through the motions as a Board member.
Fortunately sport is changing, albeit slowly because its 'customers' are more demanding and more enlightened now than 20 years ago - they are less prepared to be seen as somewhere down the pecking order of priorities after the elected officers and in some cases staff too.
For anyone who wants an emotional journey in this amateur sports world which still exists - told in an honest but dramatic way (which makes it easy reading) then this is the book - it is also worthy of re-printing and free distribution in the wider context of organisational change and governance/management issues. ... Excerpt: Stephen Roche (born 28 November 1959 in Dundrum near Dublin, Ireland) is a retired professional road racing cyclist. In a 13-year professional career, he peaked in 1987, becoming only the second cyclist to win the Triple Crown of victories in the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia stage races, plus the World road race championship. Roche's rise coincided with that of fellow Irishman Sean Kelly although the two were never team-mates. Although one of the finest cyclists of his generation and admired for his pedalling style, he struggled with knee injuries and never contended in the Grand Tours post-1987. He had 58 professional wins. On completion of his apprenticeship as a machinist in a Dublin dairy and following a successful amateur career in Ireland with the "Orwell Wheelers" club coached by Noel O'Neill of Dundrum (including a win in the Rás Tailteann in 1979), Roche joined the ACBB Boulogne-Billancourt amateur team in Paris to prepare for the 1980 Olympic games in Moscow. Soon after his arrival Roche won the amateur Paris-Roubaix, escaping with Dirk Demol and sprinting to victory on the track at Roubaix. Roche was told by his directeur sportif that if he did not win he 'would be sent home to Ireland that day. Although he also finished on the podium at the early-season prestigious Paris - Ezy, a knee injury caused by a poorly fitted shoe plate led to a disappointing ride in Moscow, where he finished 45th. However, on return to France, August to October saw Roche win 19 races. That led to a contract with the Peugeot professional cycling team for 1981. Excerpt: Edvald Boasson Hagen (born 17 May 1987 in Lillehammer) is a Norwegian professional road racing cyclist riding for the UCI ProTour team Team Sky. He is the Norwegian Time Trial Champion and also considered as one of the biggest rising talents in the sport, being ranked as no. 3 in the world by UCI as of 31 August 2009. Boasson Hagen joined the Norwegian continental team Team Maxbo Bianchi in 2006 and in his first season in the continental circuits he took eight wins including three stages of the Tour de l'Avenir. In 2007 he enjoyed a successful season and scored fifteen wins, ending up second in number of victories behind ProTour sprinter Alessandro Petacchi. But, after the disqualification of the Italian in May 2008 for doping, Alessandro Petacchi lost 5 stage wins in the 2007 Giro resulting in Boasson Hagen having the most victories. 3-0 out of 5 stars Confirming what skaters already know.
"Why isn't roller skating in the Olympics?" This question has bothered skaters and skating fans for decades. Occasionally it seems that the sport will finally get its day in the sun, but inevitably it retreats to the status quo. Skaters toil on wheels, unknown, while their counterparts on ice score millions of dollars in commercial contracts.

David Lewis recounts the story of roller skating's years of attempting to join the Olympic games, and points out some rather scathing reasons why it hasn't happened yet. Substantial amounts of blame can be placed with the IOC, but even more blame is laid at the feet of the USA Roller Skating organization, portrayed here as inept and out of touch with what needs to be done to push skating forward.

Only skaters enjoy watching those events, and not even many of them! But his heart is in the right place, and he clearly has affection for the sport.

Roller Skating for Gold is a good read, but be aware that there are tons of typos and a few factual errors, and the price is extremely high for such a slim book. The high price is the major reason I could only give the book three stars. Were it half the price, it would be a 5 (or at least 4 1/2) star book. ... Read more
