A transitional government eventually suppressed or came to terms with most political-military groups, settled a territorial dispute with Libya on terms favorable to Chad, drafted a democratic constitution, and held multiparty presidential and National Assembly elections in 1996 and 1997 respectively. In 1998 a new rebellion broke out in northern Chad, which continued to escalate throughout 1999. Despite movement toward democratic reform, power remains in the hands of a northern ethnic oligarchy. Chad Geography Country Information Population Estimates Mortality ... Definitions Geography Go Top Chad is a land-locked country in north central Africa The capital city of N’Djaména is situated at the confluence of the Chari and Logone Rivers. Chad has four bioclimatic zones. The northernmost Saharan zone averages less than 200 mm (8”) of rainfall annually. The sparse human population is largely nomadic, with some livestock, mostly small ruminants and camels. The central Sahelian zone receives between 200 and 600 mm (24”) rainfall and has vegetation ranging from grass/shrub steppe to thorny, open savanna. The southern zone, often referred to as the Sudanian zone, receives between 600 and 1,000 mm (39”), with woodland savanna and deciduous forests for vegetation. Rainfall in the Guinea zone, located in Chad’s southwestern tip, ranges between 1,000 and 1,200 mm (47”). The country’s topography is generally flat, with the elevation gradually rising as one moves north and east away from Lake Chad. The highest point in Chad is Emi Koussi, a mountain that rises 3,100 meters (10,200 ft.) in the northern Tibesti Mountains. The Ennedi Plateau and the Ouaddaï highlands in the east complete the image of a gradually sloping basin, which descends towards Lake Chad. There are also central highlands in the Guera region rising to 1,500 meters (4,900 ft.). http://www.state.gov/r/pa/bgn/5230.htm

    Geography
Chad's geography is very diverse. It lies in the middle of central Africa, and covers 490,700 square miles (1,280,000 square kilomenters). It is a land locked country, surrounded by mountains on the north, east and south borders. The north portion of Chad is the Sahara desert, which is extremely hot and very dry. The center of the country is mostly arid land. The south portion of the country is savanna land. This is the part in which most of the people of Chad live. The temperatures of Chad very greatly depending on where you are. At higher elevations the temperature can drop quite low. The desert is always hot though. In the summer large dust storms turn the sky a yellow color. The expanding desert as well as deforestation and civil war have had their effects on Chad's wildlife. Chad has many neighboring countries: Libya, Sudan, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger. They have made a major difference for Chad throughout it's history.
