Product Description
Nazareth, the largest Arab city in Israel, is a surprising example of ethnic harmony in a region dominated by conflict. A recent trend toward integration of its historical Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Muslim quarters however, has disrupted the harmony. In Beyond the Basilica: Christians and Muslims in Nazareth, Chad F. Emmett provides penetrating analysis of the complex relationship between the structure of Nazareth's quarters and the relations between its ethnic communities.

Emmett describes both the positive and negative effects of Nazareth's residential patterns. He shows that the addition of new and ethnically mixed quarters has promoted mixed schools, joint holiday celebrations, a common political culture, and social networks that cross ethnic boundaries. But he also finds that tensions exist among Christian groups and between Muslims and Christians in regard to intersectarian marriages, religious conversion, attempts to establish a joint Christian cemetery, and the emergence of a local Islamic party.

Extensive interviews with leaders of religious groups, political parties, and residents reveal the way in which members of each ethnic community perceive one another. A survey of 300 families gives a wealth of details about the make-up of Nazareth's population, including residential histories, religion, level of religious conviction, friendship and shopping patterns, and much more. Fourteen maps trace changes in the distribution of religious groups and political affiliation in Nazareth from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

Beyond the Basilica will interest cultural geographers, historians, demographers, political scientists, and anyone who would like to learn more about an ethnically divided community in the residents cooperate more than they fight. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Interesting
Beyond the Basilica; Christians and Muslims in Nazareth is an interesting and very unique book. It is a history of Nazareth and its inhabitants, primary Christians and Muslims. This book examines the relationship between these to communities, from the rise of Islam to modern times. I know that might sound like a total bore, with lots of statistics, population studies, elections, religious conflict, and history of less-than-interesting periods. Yes, it does include these things, but Chad manages to keep it interesting, with lots of interviews and personal stories from current residents. What I was most interested in was the earlier history, and this book has lots of good information (up until its publication in1995) on the historical churches and archeological sites in Nazareth. One thing that disturbed me the most was the intra-Christian fighting that continues, often over minor issues, while the unified Muslims are becoming a majority and a threat to traditions and holy sites held by Christians for centuries. In what were once integrated communities with shared cultures, tensions between the two religious groups are growing. Ironically, it is the Jewish Israelis that often have to defuse the tensions when they get out of hand. ... Read more

7. Lake Chad Versus the Sahara Desert: A Great African Lake in Crisis

Product Description
From 1955 to 2002, Dr Sylvia Sikes travelled on and around Lake Chad - that strange, immense lake in the southern Saharan Desert. This book presents an easy-to-read record of her travels, adventures and observations during this time, and illuminates the plight of the indigenous people whose way of life is being affected by climate change and modern development in Africa. Dr Sykes witnessed the lake at its peak, when it covered approximately 22,000 to 25,000 square kilometres, and was alive with fish and other wildlife. During this period, floating papyrus and reed grass and fossilized dune islands characterized the lake, and a unique lake tribe - the Yedina - with their rare bulbous-horned cattle and papyrus canoes, made it their home. These canoes provided one of the modes of travel by which Dr Sykes explored the lake, along with a sloop-rigged yacht - the "Jolly Hippo" - which she brought from England and trailed by road across Nigeria for an eight-month exploration.Continuing her travels in 1974, after the climactic "crash" of the previous year, Dr Sykes arranged a a small launch to tour the remaining areas of the lake - severely diminished by a searing drought that would continue to affect West Africa for several years. Since then, Lake Chad has remained in a dessicated state and its conservation has become a matter of serious international concern: it is unlikely that it will ever again be full with sweet, fresh water. In the closing chapters of the book, the author describes its present condition and prospects for recovery. A completely revised and updated edition of "Lake Chad", published in 1972 by the same author, this title captures the former mystery and beauty of the lake and compares this with its subsequent decline. Two additional chapters, covering the period 1973 to 2002, are accompanied by satellite images and photographs taken at Lake Chad in January 2002. ... Read more

Product Description
Ralph Smith was a highly respected historian who, at the time of his death in December 2000, had nearly completed a manuscript chronicling changes in the East Asia region since 1943. This fascinating work, completed and edited by Chad Mitcham, one of Ralph Smith's former students, himself a specialist and established author in this field, draws together the product of Professor Smith's research at archives in Britain, France, Japan and the United States, extensive reading and international travel from 1966 to 2000. The book also incorporates a distillation of ideas and themes explored in his earlier papers, articles and books, including Ralph Smith's pioneering three volume work, An International History of the Vietnam War. It shows how both Ralph Smith's thinking about the future course of the region and the broader context of regional prospects radically changed throughout this turbulent time.As Ralph Smith's last major research project, carried out from 1997 to 2000, the book has evolved from his 1997 paper 'Visions of the Future: East Asia in 1943 and 1993', delivered in the Huang Hsing Foundation Distinguished Lecture at the Asian Studies Centre, St Antony's College, Oxford. It is a vital contribution to post-war Asian history. ... Product Description
"This book demonstrates the richness of the interethnicmosaic characterizing the Valley of South Texas. . . . By giving voice tolocal residents, Professor Richardson has amassed a valuable stock of knowledgeconcerning life along the Texas-Mexican border that is sorely missingin the extant literature."--Rogelio Saenz, Professor and Head of Sociology,Texas A&M University "The Valley of South Texas," a recent joke goes, "is agreat place to live. It's so close to the United States." Culturally, this borderland region is both Mexican and Anglo-American, and its peoplespan the full spectrum, from a minority who wish to remain insulated withinstrictly Anglo or Mexican communities and traditions to a majority who dailynegotiate both worlds. This fascinating book offers the fullest portrait currently availableof the people of the South Texas borderlands. An outgrowth of the BorderlifeResearch Project conducted at the University of Texas-Pan American,it uses the voices of several hundred Valley residents, backed by the findingsof sociological surveys, to describe the lives of migrant farm workers, colonia residents, undocumented domestic servants, maquila workers, andMexican street children. Likewise, it explores race and ethnic relationsamong Mexican Americans, permanent Anglo residents, "Winter Texans,"Blacks, and Mexican immigrants. From this firsthand material, the book vividlyreveals how social class, race, and ethnicity have interacted to form aunique border culture. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just like it is...
This is a great book that tells it like it is.It describes the lives of many of us in South Texas.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book, but lacks engaging analysis
This book is a bit of a puzzle. I'm not sure if its purpose is to go beyond mere description in dealing with the "batos, bolillos, pochos and pelados" of its title. The author does do a good job of decribing the various socioeconomic relationships that exist within and between various population groups in the Rio Grande. He does this with the aid of various interviews and surveys performed by the Borderlife Project at UT-Pan Am. There are excellent summaries of the data from these surveys, and some attempt is made at explaining some of the results. But the whole book is too shallow to function as a critical work, and I'm not sure if it was the author's intent to leave the analysis at a minimum or not. (I know it would have made for a larger book). An example: the book designates "Anglo" as one of the cultural/socioeconomic groups in the Valley, and yet nothing in the book really examines what the term might mean or refer to. When Mexican immigrants were surveyed and interviewed for the Borderlife project, were they using "Anglo" in the same senses? Is there a difference between "Anglo" and "White" or do the two terms refer to the same thing? These questions are never cleared up, even though a proper analysis of the surveys would seem to require just this kind of clarification. This seems to me a critical failing of the book. Another salient failing is the fact that the book doesn't account for the fact that not all immigrants or people of Hispanic origin in the Valley are Mexican. Many are from Latin American countries other than Mexico. Richardson makes no effort to discuss the differences in culture and socioeconomic status between these groups (e.g., Nicaraguans, Colombians) and the other groups (Mexicans, Anglos, etc.), even though he does spend some time discussing a black population that is arguably less important. There are many more examples like this, but the point is that the book fails to engage in any serious analysis of the interview and survey materials. This is disappointing, especially considering the high quality of the student-led interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Life On the Border of South Texas
Many an anthropologist and sociologist has described SouthTexas borderlife along with all its cultural nuances, customs, and practices. Dr. Chad Richardson is the most recent social scientist to take on this challengingtask and none has done it better. This book is filled with stories ofcultural conflicts, clashes, and mutual cooperation among the variousinhabitants of this historically significant and culturally rich region. The cultural confluences of this region are among the strongest and mostpotent of any multicultural mecca in the world. The region and its peopleplay out the conflicts of two vastly important and different cultures, embedded in economic, power and class struggles for survival. Among thethird world colonias, the numerous 'Winter Texan' gated-communities, andthe exponential growth of 'macquiladoras,' can be heard the loud suckingsound of NAFTA accompanied by the cries of 'La LLorna.' The region and itspeople have never been so well documented. Dr. Richardson's observationsare based on empirical studies and surveys, richly supported byethnographic histories collected from archives and interviews with hundredsof families over several generations of Mexican, Mexican American andEuropean Americans who have lived, worked, and invested together to makethis region a powerful force for the future of America. This book tells the'true' story of South Texas. Dr. Richarson doesn't hide anything. He tellsit like it was, and how it continues to be, for an important, fast growing, often overlooked, underestimated, and often wrongly stereotyped, minoritypopulation. His science represents years of work. His product is mostimpressive, despite an unfortunate title.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Sabha (Arabic: سبها‎) is a city in southwestern Libya with a population of 130,000. It was historically the capital of the Fezzan region and is now capital of the Sabha District. Sabha is built on a plain sand area next to a picturesque lake, surrounded by palm trees with dates, which has made the city increasingly popular with international tourists. In addition to traditional camel-riding, hiring and driving jeeps to visit the surrounding areas has become increasingly popular. With a relatively large population, and growing fast, Sabha's importance is due to its being the air and road transport hub of the Fezzan, a military base, and the centre of a remarkable agricultural industry in the desert. ... From the author: This work presents, via an in-depth case study on how parallel coordinates coupled with statistical analysis can be used for more effective knowledge discovery and confirmation in complex, environmental data sets. Advanced visual interaction techniques such as dynamic axis scaling, conjunctive parallel coordinates, statistical indicators, and aerial perspective shading are combined into an interactive geovisual analytics system. Moreover, the system facilitates statistical processes such as stepwise regression and correlation analysis to assist in the identification and quantification of the most significant predictors for a particular dependent variable. Using a systematic workflow, this approach is demonstrated via a North Atlantic hurricane climate study in close collaboration with a domain expert. By revealing several important physical associations, the case study confirms that the visual analytics approach facilitates a deeper understanding of multidimensional climate data sets when compared to traditional techniques.

Product Description

The kind of extraordinary domed house constructed by Chad and Cameroon’s Mousgoum peoples has long held sway over the Western imagination. In fact, as Steven Nelson shows here, this prototypical beehive-shaped structure known as the teleuk has been cast as everything from a sign of authenticity to a tourist destination to a perfect fusion of form and function in an unselfconscious culture. And in this multifaceted history of the teleuk, thought of by the Mousgoum themselves as a three-dimensional symbol of their culture, Nelson charts how a singular building’s meaning has the capacity to change over time and in different places.

Drawing on fieldwork in Cameroon and Japan as well as archival research in Africa, the United States, and Europe, Nelson explores how the teleuk has been understood by groups ranging from contemporary tourists to the Cameroonian government and—most importantly—today’s Mousgoum people. In doing so, he moves in and out of Africa to provide a window into a changing Mousgoum culture and to show how both African and Western peoples use the built environment to advance their own needs and desires. Highlighting the global impact of African architecture, From Cameroon to Paris will appeal to scholars and students of African art history and architectural history, as well as those interested in Western interactions with Africa.
