It allowed humans, perhaps as far back as the Stone Age, to hunt for food. It was also a huge advance in warfare. Archery has left such an indelible mark on civilisation that it has been ranked alongside the development of speech and mastery of fire as an influence on culture. For around five millennia the story of the bow and arrow has been writ large in folklore and history. In the climax to Homer’s Odyssey , Odysseus’s prowess with the bow is pivotal in a battle with Penelope’s suitors.

The expanded competition was announced today by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) which has committed $3 million to stage the five day event from the 8 th th of January 2003. "Our first Olympic Festival in 2001 was a resounding success and more sports have been added this time round" said AOC Secretary General Bob Elphinston. "Such is the popularity of the AYOF 25 of the 28 summer Sports Federations wanted to participate and ultimately the AOC would like to include them all" he said. The new sports added to the 2003 program are Archery, Badminton, Fencing, Judo, Shooting, Softball, Table Tennis, Tae Kwon Do, Water Polo, Weightlifting and Wrestling, "Badminton, Fencing, Judo and Wrestling are sports where we are less developed and looking to improve" Elphinston said. The AOC has invited all countries from the East Asian Region and it’s expected Australia’s future Olympians will compete against teams from China, Japan and South Korea. "These countries are the world super powers in many of those disciplines," he said.

MEDIA RELEASE 25 November 1998 ASC SHARPENS ITS FOCUS ON BEST OLYMPIC CHANCES "While there is an expectation that sports which were successful in Atlanta will perform well in Sydney, other sports receiving OAP support have improved to the level where they are also expected to be medal chances in Sydney," she said. The Minister said that it came as no surprise that traditional achievers such as swimming, hockey, rowing, canoeing, cycling and sailing received a major share of funding. She added that lesser known sports such as archery, baseball and taekwondo received significant funding on the basis of medal potential. Funding recommendations for each sport were prepared on performance guidelines and, where appropriate, took into account additional needs identified by the sports, such as extra international competition, new equipment and additional sports science support to make the difference between now and the Games. Ms Kelly said the sports will be given flexibility in their use of funds, and she was confident that the OAP funding was being directed to those teams and athletes who had the best chances of success in 2000. "The significant support provided by the Federal Government under the OAP will ensure that Australia will have the best prepared Australian Olympic team ever," she said.

TSAA MESSAGE BOARD HAS BEEN ENHANCED
The TSAA Message Board
has been updated with some new features to make it easier for you to follow topics you are interested in. You can now post your own schedule events to a category, and the calendar will be updated with the info. You can even include a registration form, information sheet, tourney information hyperlink, etc. Currently, it contains an ongoing discussion of four JOAD-related proposals for the upcoming BOARD OF GOVERNOR's meeting. Initially we were lead to understand that last Sunday was the deadline for the discussion, but found out that the BOG members are monitoring the discussions right up until the actual meeting, so keep on discussing! The main page of the TSAA website also has a "ticker" area towards the bottom where you can quickly scan 5 to 10 of the latest messages with recent postings. Each has a hyperlink that will take you directly to the message. You do NOT have to register to view the messages. We do wish that you would register so that you can take advantage of all the features. Your information is never shared outside of the TSAA/NAA. There are some great posts in the topics! Please read the messages, and provide your own ideas and perspectives.

Increasing Girls' and Women's Sports Opportunities What is Title IX? Discrimination Against Women Still Widespread Saving Title IX The Olympics Shortchanges Women ... Benefits of Sports
A woman born in 1962 or later has a better chance of participating in high school or college athletics than women born earlier. That is because in 1972, a federal law, Title IX, was passed prohibiting sex discrimination at any educational institution receiving federal funds.
Women who were under 10 when Title IX passed have much higher sports participation rates than women who grew up before Title IX.
Just 30 years ago, very few women participated in college or high school intercollegiate or interscholastic athletics. Now, about a third of intercollegiate and interscholastic athletes are women. What is Title IX?
In 1972, Congress passed the Educational Amendments of 1972. One section of this law, Title IX, prohibits sex discriminationin federally-funded educational program, including athletics programs.
Because of Title IX, schools and colleges receiving federal funds in any part of the institution are required to offer equivalent sports opportunities, equipment, and funding for women's and girls' sports. Almost all colleges and universities, and some high schools, are covered by Title IX.
In addition, 12 states have state laws prohibiting sex discrimination in education, which would apply to all public education in those states. And 16 states have constitutional measures (equal rights amendments) prohibiting sex discrimination. However, the equal rights provisions passed before the 1970s are quite weak. Therefore, less than two dozen states have sex discrimination protection in educational programs.

    http://www.archery.org/what_is_archery/histor_olympics.htm
HISTORY OF ARCHERY IN OLYMPICS Archery first appeared in the Olympic Games in 1900 and was contested again in 1904, 1908, and 1920. In those four Games, it was possible for an archer to compete in numerous events and win several medals. Hubert van Innis (BEL) is the most decorated archer in Olympic history, winning six gold medals and three silvers in 1900 and 1920. Archery was re-introduced to the Olympic program in 1972 with an individual event for men and for women and John Williams and Doreen Wilber of the USA captured the gold medals. Team competition was added to the medal program in Seoul in 1988.

NEW YORK TO HOST THE WORLD IN 2003 City set to hold four major international Olympic sport competitions in 2003 January 6, 2003 New York's bid for the 2012 Olympic Games will get an important boost in 2003, as the city hosts four international Olympic sport competitions. More than 2,000 athletes from around the globe will compete in the world championships of archery and freestyle wrestling and the World Cups of fencing and triathlon. These events will help demonstrate New York's ability to - and enthusiasm for -hosting the biggest sporting event of them all. "These events will continue to stir New York's passion for Olympic sports and will help demonstrate why the city is such an exceptional home for great international competitions," NYC2012 Managing Director of Sports Wendy Hilliard said. "Each sport will get unparalleled exposure and find a wealth of enthusiastic New York fans who will cheer for athletes in their native language and welcome athletes from all over the world." The events will kick-off in June when the world's best women foil fencers return following the success of last year's World Cup stop in New York City. Men's and women's sabre fencers will hold their World Cup competition in the city simultaneously on June 12-16. "New York has a long history with the sport of fencing," said Hilliard. "The New York Fencers Club, which hosts this event, is highly experienced and we expect an enthusiastic crowd."
