Extractions: Graduate Studies College of Arts and Sciences Applied Geography Opportunities for graduate studies Applied geography is distinguishable from other forms of geographic inquiry through its use of the scientific method and its emphasis on spatial and environmental problem solving. Many of the problems facing society today have a geographical dimension. Finding sites for manufacturing and service industries, identifying cost-effective sites for retailing, identifying new sites for public services such as police substations and health care centers, identifying pollution plumes and locating acceptable sites for solid waste disposal facilities are examples of fundamentally applied geographical problems. Understanding and resolving these types of problems are at the core of applied geography. The Department of Geography offers graduate instruction leading to a master of science degree with a major in applied geography and a 15-credit-hour certification program in geographic information systems (GIS). The department also provides opportunities to take individual graduate-level courses without having to enroll in the M.S. program (contact the department for further information on this option). Admission requirements In addition to the following program requirements, students must meet the admission requirements of the Toulouse School of Graduate Studies. The major emphases in Year 1 of the project were: (1) recruitment of teachers; (2) training participants to use e-mail and participate in videoconferencing; (3) development and dissemination of three distance learning-based modules in World Geography; and (4) development and assessment of a graduate course in geography for teachers who will be teaching Advanced Placement geography classes beginning in September, '00 and/or who may wish to work toward earning their graduate degrees. The long-range goal of the project is to enhance the teaching and learning of geography and to improve teachers' ability to work with instructional technology in their own classrooms no matter where they live or teach. Partners for this project include the SWT Department of Geography and Planning; the SWT Grosvenor Center for Geographic Education; and the Texas Education Agency.

Second in size among the states, Texas, according to the 1994 Statistical Abstract of the United States, has a land and water area of 267,277 square miles as compared with Alaska's 615,230 square miles. The state's area consists of 261,914 square miles of land and 5,363 square miles of water. TEXAS' HIGHS AND LOWS The highest point in the state is Guadalupe Peak at 8,749 feet above sea level. Its twin, El Capitain, stands at 8,085 feet and is also located in Culberson County near the New Mexico state line. Fort Davis in Jeff Davis County is the highest town of any size in Texas at 5,050 feet. Sea level is the lowest elevation determined in Texas, and it can be found in all the coastal counties. Texas was admitted to the Union as the 28th state on December 29, 1845. State Capitol:-AUSTIN Capitol building is constructed of Texas red granite and was completed in 1888. It is the largest state building in the United States.

Extractions: History of Texas Geography HISTORY OF TEXAS GEOGRAPHY. Z. T. FULMORE. The great diversity of jurisdiction exercised over the area embraced within what is now known as Texas, and the geographical changes consequent upon the many political vicissitudes through which it has passed, render the history of its political geography peculiarly interesting, though complicated, and in many respects puzzling. It is probable that no part of the Western world has been subject to so many sovereignties, or has furnished so many bases for international contention. All that part of its geographical history prior to 1819 is involved in an uncertainty and obscurity which has baffled the patience and genius of even so great an exploiter as Mr. H. H. Bancroft, and if we were to content ourselves with the progress he and other historians have made, and with the conclusions arrived at by them, many disconnected fragments and political coincidences would remain as idle excrescences upon the pages of our history, and among the accumulated piles of annals covering a period of over two hundred years. As these fragments are gathered up, one by one, and classified in the order of their significance and logical relation to each other, it begins to dawn upon us that the various processes through which we have grown into our present proportions have followed each other in a somewhat orderly development, and that the time may come when it shall be possible for that interesting period of our history to be presented as a harmonious and philosophical story.
