4-0 out of 5 stars Rookie Reader - Texas
We are a homeschooling family and are currently doing a study of the states.I am always happy to be able to find books that my struggling 3rd grade son is able to read and enjoy.I believe the books in this series have accomplished that.We have enjoyed the books in this series very much.

Most of the states I've been able to request through ourlibrary system. This particular one was not available but since my husband is from Texas I wanted to make this one available to our son.So I purchased this one.

Through our local library and a few other purchases my son has read many of the books in this series. Not just in Geography but many others in the Rookie Read About Science/Health/Math/Holidays books that are also available.

I think even if the child is not a struggling reader these are still good, informative and interesting books. ... Read more

Product Description
In this fascinating guide to the archaeology of Texas,Robert Marcom covers the entire story of the peoples and cultures ofTexas, from hunter-gatherers chasing bison into arroyos over 10,000years ago, to the Caddo establishing villages across East Texas duringthe last millenium, and the the relatively recent immigration of peskyEuropeans and Americans. Few books attempt to integrate the completehistory of the state in one place - but seen through the eyes of anarchaeologist and pulled together here - the past comes alive as avivid and exciting story, 500 generations in the making. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars read it in one day
This is a great book for the novice and directs the reader in the field of historical and present archaeology, Texas field research, and in my opinion...Texas history- from ancient to present times. I thought the drawings, even though primitive, were helpful and interesting and did not degrade the subject matter at all. I've driven by many of the spots mentioned in the book all my life and never knew what awesome things lie beyond the barbed wire fences. This is a book that I will take with me on long road trips traveling across the highways in the great state of Texas that I call home!

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guide!
Texas has had a great and colorful history! This book tells about this history from an archeologist's point of view. From PaleoIndian to the simply historic, great digs and their importance are described in the state of Texas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Houston Area Library System comments:
Probably the most comprehensive look at archaeology in Texas that is targeted to non-professionals and still in print, this book is properly described as a "first step" into the sometimes inscrutable world of archaeology, with its arcane jargon. Well illustrated and up to date, with information about many recent and highly important discoveries.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly done
Disappointed in this book.Poorly done drawings of points and of other things.Subject matter jumps around too much, reads like a "People Magazine" version of archaeology.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting and practical resource for archaeology buffs
Digging Up Texas: A Guide To The Archaeology Of The State by archaeologist Robert Marcom is a solid and thoroughly "reader friendly" archaeology guide to over 15,000 years of history, researched and discovered in the archaeological endowed state of Texas. Ranging from the remains of ancient proto-historical Native American cultures, to the contemporary and diverse resources available for avocational archaeology, Digging Up Texas is an exciting and practical resource for archaeology buffs of all experience levels, from the amateur enthusiast to the trained professional. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The Wrong Choic
This is one of two possible texts that can be used in Texas to teach world geography. It comes in tenth in a field of two.The book is poorly arranged and is rife with editorial and political comment disguised as information. The relationship and importance of geography to current real world events is passed over perfunctorily. As a tutor, I use the National Geographic World geography text(the other one approved for Texas) even when the school district has chosen this one.Nat Geo is way less political and opinionated and goes much further in relating this course to the real future lives of its students. ... Product Description
"Imperial Texas" examines the development of Texas as a human region, from the simple outline of the Spanish colony to the complex patterns of the modern state. In this study in cultural geography set into a historical framework, D.W. Meinig, professor of geography at Syracuse University, discusses the 'various people of Texas, who they are, where they came from, where they settled, and how they are proportioned one to another from place to place'. After examining the historical framework, he then presents detailed analyses of the major regions of modem Texas and an over-all characterization of the state and its people. He concludes that, although Texas has never been the empire that it has sometimes been called, 'nevertheless...Texas is something more than just one-fourteenth of the American area, one-twentieth of the American people, and one-fiftieth of the American union'. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Useful, Well Written Book
This useful and well written book is a staple among students of the history of cartography (HoC) in Texas. It was written as a companion piece to the first major HoC exhibit on Texas maps, put on by the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth. The exhibit then went on the road, showing at libraries and other venues throughout the state. The book was greeted with critical acclaim by scholars and lay readers alike, and the first edition quickly sold out.Its resale value shot up due to demand, until the Texas State Historical Society took it under wing and produced this reprint edition.Clearly then, in the view of many readers from diverse backgrounds, this is a very useful and worthwhile book.

When it was first published (1984), there was not much written about the HoC of Texas. The book quickly became the standard reference for HoC scholars and map collectors interested in Texas, a role its authors never foresaw.Indeed, they wrote in their Preface that "...our first goal has been to stimulate further inquiry and to add to the appreciation of the value of historic maps as tools in learning about any place, at any time."The book did just that.It has been one of several catalysts in the intervening years for a tremendous growth in appreciation, study, and publications dealing with Texas antiquarian maps.Unfortunately this has not yet led to a definitive catalogue of Texas maps, so Martin & Martin (as it is commonly known) continues play this role to which it never aspired.

The work is divided into three parts. The first is a series of brief introductory pieces, about 40 total pages. These trace, in terms accessible to the average reader, the evolution of maps and their role in Texas from the earliest period of exploration through the 20th century. While of interest to most readers, for those unfamiliar with the history of either Texas or cartography, they are especially helpful. The second section contains 16 color plates with no commentary.Following that there are 50 black and white plates. Each is a full page, faced by a page of well researched, easy to read commentary. The 16 color plates are repeated here so that commentary can be inserted. This may be puzzling at first, but was undoubtedly done to reduce costs. It was cheaper to place all the color in one "signature" for binding than to intersperse color printing throughout, even at the cost of repeating some pages. This is why this book retails on Amazon for under $30 instead of twice the price.

I hope this helps the prospective buyer appreciate the book and decide more easily whether this is the book you're looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Expected something better
I paid over $45.00 I couldn't afford to spend on this book because I love maps and thought this book was going to be a bonanza of information and would serve as a great reference forever. Well, there are a lot of maps in this book, but not at all useful in the way I'd hoped. The most interesting (to me) thing that I learned from this book was a one-pager about the U.S. Coast Survey and its history. I keep thinking that one day, I will value this book more than I do now. As it is, I wish I'd spent the money having my cat spayed. ... Read more

Product Description
From the dense forests of the Big Thicket to the limitless vistas of the Davis Mountains, Texas is a land of astonishing diversity and natural beauty. Yet it is also a land where commuters endure endless traffic jams in the major cities and where pollution and environmental degradation threaten the most essential elements of our common living space--the land, air, and water. In this thoughtful, practical book, Pete Gunter and Max Oelschlaeger offer a new vision for living on the land, a "land ethic" that respects the stability, integrity, and beautyof the "land community." Avoiding harsh rhetoric that seeks only to place blame and foretell doom, they discuss how economic and environmental goals may be reconciled so that Texans can continue to enjoy a reasonable prosperity while living in a land free of pollutants and scars, where some wild lands still exist and animals range freely. In presenting their land ethic, the authors draw on the ideas of Aldo Leopold, whose A Sand County Almanac persuasively urges human beings to respect the land--with all of its animal and plant inhabitants--that supports us. This is an ethic to take Texas into the twenty-first century, in which the wise choices we make now will create a stable and sustainable future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource
This is one of my favorite TX landscaping books that stays out of the bookcase all through the growing season. You will find it invaluable as a resource to TX natives, especially if you are new to gardening the the Lone Star State.

The part I found most valuable is the breakdowns of the various planting regions. I don't think I would have had as much success with my landscape without this section.

Gardening in TX is hard enough what with trying to find native plants in the big box stores. All they seem to carry is a few cultivars that are only marginally successful in our brutal summers with year round water restrictions. This book gives you the skinny on how well native plants will do where you put them and how best to care for them.

I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Texas Gardeners
This book on Texas plants is the best one out there covering this subject. I have one and when I was living in Texas it was the best. No book comes close to this one in terms of plant information.
