Extractions: The Department includes 16 full-time faculty, 10 associated faculty and research scientists, about 160 undergraduate majors, and about 40 M.S. and Ph.D. students. Externally funded research expenditures totaled approximately $1 M in the 2000-01 fiscal year. The department has three integrated state-of-the art spatial analysis laboratories that support research in geographic information science, spatial modeling, and remote sensing including advanced research in the areas of multi-spectral, hyper-spectral and radar remote sensing. These facilities also support first class undergraduate and graduate education in the burgeoning arena of geo-spatial technologies. Recently, the Department has added a faculty member specializing in coastal applications of GIS and a second faculty member in environmental geography. Graduate Studies Our graduates accept a wide variety of jobs, such as applications of GIS to environmental, remote sensing, industrial and business needs; film and television production and broadcasting at local and national levels; and specialized software development for land use planning. Of our 37 M.S. and Ph.D. graduates from 1996-2000, 16 began advanced degree studies or secured positions in academic institutions, 15 accepted jobs in the private sector, 4 hold state or federal government positions, and 2 are teaching at the K-12 level. Texas became very well known because of the oil production. The oil boom may have passed; but Texas is now the leader in the petrochemical industry. Although not in the same dimension that the oil industry, Texas is also big in the cattle industry and cotton production. Texas is the only state that had six flags, including the current one. "Six flags over Texas" . It is very common to see the Texas flag next to the American flag in many buildings. Texas also has its own capitolio building in Austin. Texas past goes back to Spain and Mexico, until Texas got the independence from Mexico, after many battles, being the most famous The Alamo (Thirteen Days of Glory) , which turned out a victory for the Mexican army but a psychological victory for Texas, because of the courage displayed by the defenders who gave their lifes, and eventually lead to the independence of Texas. For a while Texas was a republic; then joined the Union. It broke away from the Union participating in the civil war taking the side of the south, and finally back to the Union.

Extractions: A trip report of a weekend in Big Bend Nat'l Park. Sept. 3, 1994 For those of you who have never been in south Texas, even at the end of August it is quite warm. 100 degrees during the daytime is normal and the evenings don't cool off much early. At midnight it is pleasantly warm at 85 degrees. Out here in the desert I had to expect the temperatures to be more extreme, hotter during daytime reaching 105 and colder at night. The desert is big and contains many surprises. Interesting geological formations can be found all over the place. Volcanic rocks are forming the surface in many places. Lifting has exposed old rock formations and presents the layers to be seen from tens of miles away. Dinosaur bones have been found that are 60 to 80 million years old. Some old graves are just off the street, the most famous one is from a woman who died in her 30ies in 1910. Despite it is dry and hot and I sweat strongly it is astonishingly easy to find water or the marks of water in this huge desert. There are tons of dry washes and empty creeks that tell me that during the rain rich months flash floods are likely and that there must be enough water to carve canyons and creeks into the rock. Near the grave of that lady I found a few pools of water and in a dry creek digging just a couple of inches revealed moist dirt. Another trip lead me to a dry canyon, called something like Lost Burro. After a few miles the trail suddenly sort of disappears. Wild cacti and other plants with thorns gave me a hard time and punctured my skin in a few places. So with a little bit of blood on my knee and ankles, without a trail, not having seen anyone for a while (the whole Nat'l Park had no more than 30 visitors and half of those were staying in the air conditioned motel-like cabins in the higher elevations of the Chisos Mountains) it finally felt like it should feel in Nat'l Park. In the area I found a dry creek with some tiny pools of standing water. Following the creek bed upstreams I found a dry waterfall. It was easy to climb and only 15 ft high, cut into solid rock. Further up I found another dry waterfall; since it was higher I had to walk around it to the top were the water had carved a jacuzzi sized tub that was filled with dirty water and seemed like a life spender to all sorts of insects.

Tell me when this page is updated English narration Geography Peru renowned as the land of the Incas, has an area of 1,285,216 square kms, and it is on the Pacific Coast of north-central South America.It is the third largest country in South America, behind Brazil and Argentina. Peru is considered a tropical country. It has three major regions, a narrow coastal belt, the wide Andean mountains, and the Amazon rainforest. The coastal strip is mostly desert; however the major cities are found in that area which are connected by the Pan-American highway. The rivers running down the steep slopes of the Andes, generate narrow oases (valleys) where most of the agriculture centres seat. Distinctive and exotic plants and animals inhabit these three different regions. From llamas, alpacas, vicunas and condors to piranhas and toucans; Peru is a naturalist's paradise. The Andes rise rapidly from the coastland. Just 100 km inland the Andes reach 6000 meters (19,688 feet.) The Huascaran is the highest mountain with 6768 meters (22,208 feet.) Most of Peru's Andes lie between 3,000 and 4,000 meters, separated by vertiginous canyons. Driving in the mountain roads in that area requires much expertise and a lot of guts, since minor roadways are two way traffic, but only wide enough to accommodate one vehicle. These roads have passing zones only at certain intervals, so many times a vehicle has to back up for a good distance, to let the other vehicle pass. The rule is that the vehicle running uphill has the right of way, since it would be very dangerous for the driver to backup the vehicle downhill, and keep control of the vehicle because of the steepy roadway grades.
