Product Description
Konrad Zuse is one of the great pioneers of the computerage. He created thefirst fully automated, programcontrolled, freely programmable computer using binaryfloating-point calculation. It was operational in 1941.Hebuilt his first machines in Berlin during the Second WorldWar, with bombs falling all around, and after the war hebuilt up a company that wastaken over by Siemens in 1967.Zuse was an inventor in the traditionalstyle, full ofphantastic ideas, but also gifted with a powerfulanalyticalmind. Single-handedly, he developed one of the firstprogramming languages, the Plan Calculus, including featurescopied only decades later in other languages. He wrotenumerousbooks and articles and won many honors and awards. This is hisautobiography, written in an engagingly livelyand pleasant style, full ofanecdotes, reminiscences, andphilosophical asides. It traces his life from his childhoodin East Prussia, through tense wartime experiences andhardtimes building up his business after the war, to a ripe oldage andwell-earned celebrity.Amazon.com Review
Personal computers didn't appear until the 1970s, but as early as 1941, the first automated, program-controlled, and freely programmable computer was up and running. The Computer--My Life is the story of Konrad Zuse and his revolutionary invention--the computer (or mechanical brain as he liked to call it), which Zuse built in his parents' living room. Zuse writes his autobiography simply and directly to be accessible to a wide audience of non-technophiles and includes hand-drawn diagrams of computer functions, as well as cartoons from his younger years when he dreamed of becoming an artist. The book also includes appendices with detailed technical information for the more technical reader. ... Read more

Excerpt: Wernher Magnus Maximilian Freiherr von Braun (March 23, 1912 June 16, 1977) was a German-American rocket scientist, astronautics engineer and space architect, becoming one of the leading figures in the creation of rocket technology in Germany and the United States. He was a member of the Nazi party and a commissioned SS officer. Wernher von Braun was said to be the preeminent rocket engineer of the 20th century. In his 20s and early 30s, von Braun was the central figure in Germany's pre-war rocket development programme, responsible for the design and realization of the deadly V-2 combat rocket during World War II. After the war, he and some of his rocket team were taken to the United States as part of the then-secret Operation Paperclip. In 1955, ten years after entering the country, von Braun became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Von Braun worked on the US Army intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) program before his group was assimilated by NASA, under which he served as director of the newly formed Marshall Space Fl...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=33783 ... Excerpt: Konrad Zuse (pronounced ; 22 June 1910 Berlin 18 December 1995 Hünfeld) was a German engineer and computer pioneer. His greatest achievement was the world's first functional program-controlled Turing-complete computer, the Z3, in 1941 (the program was stored on a punched tape). He received the Werner-von-Siemens-Ring in 1964 for the Z3. His S2 computing machine is considered the first process-controlled computer, which was used to help develop the Henschel Werke HS-293 and HS-294, which were precursors to the modern cruise missile. Excerpt: Dr. Douglas C. Engelbart (born January 30, 1925) is an American inventor and early computer pioneer. He is best known for inventing the computer mouse, as a pioneer of human-computer interaction whose team developed hypertext, networked computers, and precursors to GUIs; and as a committed and vocal proponent of the development and use of computers and networks to help cope with the worlds increasingly urgent and complex problems. His lab at SRI was responsible for more breakthrough innovation than possibly any other lab before or since. Engelbart had embedded in his lab a set of organizing principles, which he termed his "bootstrapping strategy", which he specifically designed to bootstrap and accelerate the rate of innovation achievable. Engelbart was born in the U.S. state of Oregon on January 30, 1925 to Carl Louis Engelbart and Gladys Charlotte Amelia Munson Engelbart. He is of German, Swedish and Norwegian descent. He was the middle of three children, with a sister Dorianne (3 years older), and a brother David (14 months younger). They lived in Portland in his early years, and moved to the countryside to a place called Johnson Creek when he was 9 or 10, after the death of his father. Product Description
Digital philosophy is a direction in philosophy and cosmology advocated by certain mathematicians and theoretical physicists, e.g., Gregory Chaitin, Edward Fredkin, Stephen Wolfram, and Konrad Zuse (see his Calculating Space). Digital philosophy grew out of an earlier digital physics (both terms are due to Fredkin), which proposes to ground much of physical theory in cellular automata. Specifically, digital physics works through the consequences of assuming that the universe is a gigantic Turing-complete cellular automaton. Digital philosophy is a modern re-interpretation of Gottfried Leibniz's monist metaphysics, one that replaces Leibniz's monads with aspects of the theory of cellular automata. Digital philosophy purports to solve certain hard problems in the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of physics, since, following Leibniz, the mind can be given a computational treatment. The digital approach also dispenses with the non-deterministic essentialism of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum theory. In a digital universe, existence and thought would consist of only computation. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Collection of Wikipedia Articles Bound and Sold for $90+
While useful for a physical reference, the book amounts to a collection of Wikipedia articles thrown together into a single volume and drastically over priced. At 200 pages, I could get my local copy shop to print out the articles and bind them together for about $20. If you want to see the content of the book, check out the table of contents then see the wikipedia articles of the same name. Amazon.com should have on the page in clear view at least a sentence from the imprint "All parts of this book are extracted from Wikipedia, the FREE encyclopedia ([...])."

The picture of the cover above is not an acceptable warning. Overall a huge disappointment. ... Read more

Auszug: Konrad Zuse (pronounced ; 22 June 1910 Berlin - 18 December 1995 Hünfeld near Fulda) was a German engineer and computer pioneer. His greatest achievement was the world's first functional program-controlled Turing-complete computer, the Z3, in 1941 (the program was stored on a punched tape). He received the Werner-von-Siemens-Ring in 1964 for the Z3. His S2 computing machine is considered the first process-controlled computer, which was used to help develop the Henschel Werke Hs 293 and Hs 294, which were precursors to the modern cruise missile. It is also considered one of the first analog-to-digital converters. Zuse also designed the first high-level programming language, Plankalkül, first published in 1948, although this was a theoretical contribution, since the language was not implemented in his lifetime and did not directly influence early languages. One of the inventors of ALGOL (Rutishauser) wrote: "The very first attempt to devise an algorithmic language was undertaken in 1948 by K. Zuse. His notation was quite general, but the proposal never attained the consideration it deserved." In addition to his technical work, Zuse founded one of the earliest computer businesses on the 1st of April 1941 (Zuse Ingenieurbüro und Apparatebau). This company built the Z4, which became the second commercial computer leased to ETH Zürich in 1950. Due to World War II, however, Zuse's work went largely unnoticed in the UK and the U.S.; possibly his first documented influence on a U.S. company was IBM's option on his patents in 1946. In the late 1960s, Zuse sugges...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more
