3-0 out of 5 stars The Scoobidoo approach to history
In the early 1990s, George Lucas, perhaps the greatest provider of popular culture in the twentieth century, produced what I consider to be the best TV series ever made, *The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles*, the concept of which was, in Lucas's own words, "to get kids involved in history through the Young Indiana Jones character".

The series had two actors impersonating young Indy: Corey Carrier was Indy from 1908 through 1911, and Sean Patrick Flannery was Indy from 1916 through 1921. As the actors matured, I supposed Lucas intended to have them explore the early 1910s and 20s. Unfortunately, the series petered out, and all we are left with is a collection of fifteen young adults books that fill the gap between the Carrier and Flannery periods, from the Spring of 1913 in this volume to December 1914 in *The Eye of the Tiger*.

*Young Indiana Jones and the Plantation Treasure* has thirteen-year old Indy join young Lizzie Ravenall (who returns in *The Curse of the Ruby Cross* and *Mountain of Fire*) in her quest for an ancient family treasure that has them trace a slave of her grandfather's through the remains of the Underground Railroad. The plot is pre-formatted Scoobidoo but, faithful to the vocation of the TV series, it manages to marble in some information on the antebellum South. Moreover, the slim volume contains five bibliographical references for kids who want to find out more, and a four-paragraph historical note which tells you that, contrary to the TV episodes, which always featured at least one important historical figure, "the main characters in the book are all made up", but that abolitionist Garrick Lloyd was based on William Lloyd Garrison and the slave Indy and Lizzie are looking for, Harriet Stoneman, had a real-life equivalent, Harriet Tubman.

All in all, it is a rather sympathetic adventure that might conceivably stimulate interest in history among younger readers.

(One continuity error I am having problems with is the allusion to the hat "that man gave me in Utah", a reference to the Utah, 1912 segment of *Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade*, in which an eighteen-year old River Phoenix played a thirteen-year old Indy. It is really hard to picture the hero of this book as Phoenix one year older. But then the fault lies with the movie, not the book.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Before Raiders of the Lost Ark. . .
Before Raiders of the Lost Ark, meet Young Indy in this great book about treasure. While on business with his father, he meets a girl named Lizzie Ravenall who is searching for her family treasure. She, Indy and hisfather go all across the Eastern Seaboard following the UndergroundRailroad to find the treasure. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unjustly forgotten
This is the reprint of the edition published in 1797, with engravings of William Blake. The poem itself, enormously popular in the 18th century, is now shrouded in obscurity, and it stays in print only due to Blake's illustrations. But despite of its unpopularity, I found it quite enjoyable. It is best read in one sitting, without interrupting the constant flow of ideas and thoughts. It is a meditation, at once introspective and all-encompassing, a contemplation of Death, Time, Friendship, and Immortality of man. Granted, it does tend to drag on too much in the last chapter, but the first ones are so good they're worthy of being memorized. Blake's engravings, surrounding the text as a frame, capture the essense of the poem and at the same time enhance it, adding to it even more depth. The poem's abstract concepts take shape, making some passages more memorable. (This edition includes a commentary on the pictures' symbolism.) The book is worth getting for the engravings alone; it is a work of art in every sense of the word. ... Read more

Product Description

A fresh and vivid re-imagining of Shakespeare's early years in Stratford and in London

It's 1616 and William Shakespeare is back in his native Stratford-Upon-Avon. His extraordinary career as a playwright and poet in London seems like another world. A strange encounter with a witch-like madwoman in his local churchyard fills Will with dread, and sends him reeling back in memory to those darker days in London along the filthy, fevered banks of the Thames-a time when politics, plagiarism, sexual passions, and betrayed friendship conspired to the point of murder.

Author Bruce Cook perfectly captures Shakespeare's coming of age in a fresh and vivid way. The actors, teachers, lovers, and fellow writers spring to life in Shakespeare's confessions-especially a talented, twisted, compelling, and dangerous man called Kit Marlowe, who would change Will's life forever.

Shakespeare speaks, from first page to last, and tells everything. Literally everything...

1-0 out of 5 stars If you love Shakespeare, you'll hate this book.
THis is not a novel to be tossed lightly aside, but should be hurled with great force. The action starts off with Will being sexually molested by a former school teacher and it ends with Will stabbing a helplessly bound Marlowe in the eye. This is a dark, gloomy novel with none of the brightness of Shakespeare.Under a thin veil of historical accuracy, Cook writes a hatchett job on Shakespeare by adding completely inaccurate events. It also has a very homeo-erotice portion. Will has sex with Marlowe to look at Marlowe's plays. This is the most distasteful book about Shakespeare I've ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another smash success by Bruce Cook
I am a fan of Bruce Cook (Bruce Alexander) having read all his titles in the Chico Cervantes and Sir John Fielding series. My copy of Young Will: The Confessions of William Shakespeare arrived this week and I quickly finished it. A timeless tale of adultery, betrayal and murder, Young Will is all the more riveting because the central character is one of the greatest artists of all time. Whether or not you are a Shakespeare fan, you will be informed, entertained and on the edge of your seat as you turn the pages. The story is rich in historical depictions, as are all of the author's works. By beginning the story with "young Will", Cook shares with his readers the backdrop against which Shakespeare honed his craft. I knew Shakespeare by his works, and as a timeless poet and playright. Cook considers life for young Will as he may have struggled with manhood and the enormous difficulties of 17th century London. ... Read more

Product Description
Wanting to produce a 90-Minute Shakespeare play? This ready-to-use adaptation of one of the Bard's most popular plays, respects the verse and retains all major characters and plotlines. The play has been shortened, but none of Shakespeare's words have been changed. For the Shakespeare purist who loves the language, but desires a shorter running time, these are the scripts to use. The production-tested adaptations are perfect for a variety of groups, including professional theaters using a 90-minute TYA (Theatre-For-Young-Audiences) contract, universities, high schools, and community theaters. Free from side-by-side translations or notes, the scripts are rehearsal ready. The most common comment from audiences who have viewed productions of these adaptations is: "What was cut? It seemed like that was the whole play."

Romeo & Juliet is also available.

Coming soon: THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, KING LEAR and TWELFTH NIGHT.

DIANE TIMMERMAN, a professional actor and director, is an Associate Professor of Theatre at Butler University where she has directed all five of her Shakespeare adaptations. Acting credits include roles at Chicago's Court Theatre, Dayton's Human Race Theatre Company, the Indiana Repertory and Phoenix Theatres of Indianapolis. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I am the founder of The Haven Theatre Company in Los Angeles - and we are in the middle of performing our first production, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" using Diane Timmerman's spectacular script. We have to perform the play in one act -- and I was relieved to find a Midsummer script already edited to serve this purpose.

Our show has received much praise since our opening -- people have said of the script that it is a brilliant cut.It retains all of the major plotlines and most of the characters -- but boils it down to plot and what is most relevant today. In fact, I think it's perfect for our modern audiences. One friend who saw the show, who is a producer at ABC television, said, he "didn't feel like was watching Shakespeare. -- It flew by, had terrific flow, and was very entertaining."

I plan to use all of Diane Timmerman's scripts over the next few years!!!I couldn't encourage the use of her "A Midsummer Night's Dream" more.. it is fabulous.

Sincerely,
Ashley Ward

5-0 out of 5 stars For a Greater Appreciation of Will
It's like reading the play anew. Even if you're looking to perform or teach the fuller version of R&J get this book. Never has the tragedy sounded so clear--no insult to the bard intended. Lines I never noticed before ring clear, true and beautiful. In fact since using Professor Timmerman's 90-Minute Midsummer Night's Dream for a production, and reading this Romeo and Juliet, I have gained an even greater appreciation for what Shakespeare's audiences reveled in and what great, glorious entertainment he created. So while these 90-Minute Shakespeares are an aid to production at any level, I'm finding them a contribution to scholarship and teaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Trim Midsummer
I just finished staging a production of Midsummer with high school students. I had already started making my cuts when I came across Ms. Timmerman's text. I went back and compared--there was no comparison. What she gives is a clean, clear, plot-thrust version of the play. It made it a lot easier for me to see what I wanted to do with my production. I pray she continues. ... Read more
