Product Description
The presence of contemporary Chinese artists on the international art market has steadily increased in recent years: China made a major presentation at the Venice Biennale in 1990, and Chinese artists have been celebrated at numerous exhibitions in their own country and abroad since then. Photography, which plays an important role in Chinese art, has become the leading medium for the representation of rapidly changing social realities and the problems of identity associated with them. This lavishly illustrated volume presents 18 photographers and their works, and offers unprecedented insight into China's lively photography scene. The Chinese focuses mainly on photographers between the ages of 30 and 40 who, through a wide range of styles--from documentary to straight photography, respond to the world around them. They shed light on the issues facing Chinese society: rapid urban growth, the cultural clash of socialist Chinese culture, and the world of capitalism and consumption.

Product Description
The concept of medical treatment from a distance (in absentia care) is actually quite ancient, dating back to tribal days where smoke signals were used to warn of serious disease in a community. Nowadays, telemedicine is used to facilitate treatment in rural areas, where the nearest doctor is miles away, through various forms of information technology, including videoconferencing and digital imaging. It can also be used to conveniently monitor chronically ill patients through electronic devices so that they can enjoy a better quality of life. But despite the strides that have been made in utilizing the telemedicine technology, there remain a number of limitations and weaknesses that must be overcome before this treatment paradigm can reach its full potential.

In Mobile Telemedicine: A Computing and Network Perspective, noted computer scientists Yang Xiao and Hui Chen examine those computing and networking dilemmas arising from wireless and mobile telemedicine. Comprised of the contributions of many prominent international researchers, the book discusses the relative merits and limitations of the existing technology and sheds light on future developments. It begins with a discussion of patient care and monitoring through items such as personal alarm systems. It then reviews the current methods available to monitor cardiac and diabetic patients, analyzes the security and privacy considerations that arise with respect to the transmission of sensitive information, and examines issues relating to networking support. Finally, it concludes with a section on the opportunities and challenges faced by those involved at this intersection of healthcare and communications.

By bridging the fields of medicine and information technology, this volume serves as a useful springboard for those pioneering IT researchers looking for a comprehensive reference. The book also provides information for those involved with either communications or healthcare who want to learn about the current state and potential use of this technology. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars exciting advances
Here is an upbeat look at future medicine. The ever cheaper cost of computing and communications promises significant improvements in telemedicine. The authors survey the possibilities.

Prominent amongst these is safety. Being able to remotely monitor elderly or others who might need urgent assistance. As the proportion of elderly increases in several countries, this affords lifestyle improvements and productivity gains.

In related ways, there are others who need regular monitoring of their health. The example of diabetics keeping an eye on their insulin levels in blood is given. Especially relevant, since diabetes has been increasing worldwide. For cases like this, the monitoring might be automatically done by instruments on the person, and then uploaded to a central location, for future analysis.

Another improvement is for a doctor to be able to diagnose a patient remotely. Or even to conduct surgery in this manner. The latter might be still fairly rare, however. ... Read more

Excerpt: Luo Xuejuan (simplified Chinese: ; traditional Chinese: ; pinyin: Luó Xujun; born January 26, 1984 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang) is a female Chinese swimmer, who competed mostly in the breaststroke. She is a former World Record holder in swimming, and in some meet results she is listed as "LUO Xue Juan". She began swimming in 1991 because her parents thought she was so thin that the exercise would make her stronger. Luo first caught attention when she won the 100 breast at China's 2000 Olympics Trials in Jinan in a solid time of 1:08.87 and finished second in the 200 breast in 2:27.29. Strangely, she was only selected to swim the 200 breast, her weaker event, at the 2000 Summer Olympics a few months later. She posted a PB of 2:25.86 in the semi-finals, only to falter in the final and finish 8th in 2:27.33. Going into 2001, Luo progressed rapidly. At the Chinese Nationals in April, she set a national record of 1:07.85 in the 100 breast and placed 2nd in the 200 breast (2:26.37) which was...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=933948 ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Yang Hui was a Chinese mathematician from Qiantang (modern Hangzhou), Zhejiang province during the late Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). Yang worked on magic squares, magic circles and the binomial theorem, and is best known for his contribution of presenting 'Yang Hui's Triangle'. This triangle was the same as Pascal's Triangle, discovered by Yang's predecessor Jia Xian. Yang was also a contemporary to the other famous mathematician Qin Jiushao. The earliest extant Chinese illustration of 'Pascal's Triangle' is from Yang's book Xiangjie Jiuzhang Suanfa of 1261 AD, in which Yang acknowledged that his method of finding square roots and cubic roots using "Yang Hui's Triangle" was invented by mathematician Jia Xian who expounded it around 1100 AD, about 500 years before Pascal. In his book (now lost) known as Ruji Shisuo or Piling-up Powers and Unlocking Coefficients, which is known through his contemporary mathematician Liu Ruxie. Jia described the method used as 'li cheng shi suo' (the tabulation system for unlocking binomial coefficients). It appeared again in a publication of Zhu Shijie's book Jade Mirror of the Four Unknowns of 1303 AD. ... Read more

Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Zhou (or Jow) Tong (Chinese: and 周侗; pinyin: Zhōu Tóng) (died late 1121 CE) was the archery teacher and second military arts tutor of famous Song Dynasty general Yue Fei. Originally a local hero from Henan, he was hired to continue Yue Fei's military training in archery after the boy had rapidly mastered spearplay under his first teacher. In addition to the future general, Zhou accepted other children as archery pupils. During his tutelage, Zhou taught the children all of his skills and even rewarded Yue with his two favorite bows because he was his best pupil. After Zhou's death, Yue would regularly visit his tomb twice a month and perform unorthodox sacrifices that far surpassed that done for even beloved tutors. Yue later taught what he had learned from Zhou to his soldiers and they were successful in battle. With the publishing of Yue Fei's 17th-18th century folklore biography, The Story of Yue Fei, a new distinct fictional Zhou Tong emerged, which differed greatly from his historical persona. Not only was he now from Shaanxi; but he was Yue's adopted father, a learned scholar with knowledge of the eighteen weapons of war, and his personal name was spelled with a different, yet related, Chinese character. The novel's author portrayed him as an elderly widower and military arts tutor who counted Lin Chong and Lu Junyi, two of the 108 outlaws on which the Water Margin is based, among his former pupils. A later republican era folktale by noted Yangzhou storyteller Wang Shaotang not only adds Wu Song to this list, but represents Zhou as a knight-errant with supreme swordsmanship. ...http://booksllc.net/?id=5568326 ...
