Not true love at all
I found this book to be very well worth reading, everything is supported by factual evidence(e.g the letters and police reports)and Simmie keeps the story progressing very well from start to finish while keeping it clear and understandable for the reader to follow what is happening. It doesn't tell the story of a man consumed by love as most would say, but of a man consumed with himself and his selfishness, he wanted something and didn't care what or who he destroyed in the process of acheiving it.

this book is alright
All the letters and stuff were pretty boring to read. And the suicide attempt scene is probably the most horrible thing I've ever read and will scar me for life but this book was actually pretty...good. Especially since I hail from Regina, I reccommend this book to all the Skatchies

American Government
I found this book to be somewhat disappointing. Throughout the book, I caught on to poor editing and was frustrated by a sparse index, which made it difficult to ascertain where exactly to find what I was looking for. While much of the book was readable, other parts consisted of wordy sentences that made simple statements unnecessarily confusing.

A Bit Above Average College Textbook
Having read parts of this textbook for a college American Gov class I can say that it is fascinating for those interested in the subject and the author is engaging enough to be read by all who are interested in learning more about the essentials of American Government. All too familiar...
It is called 'dark comedy' or 'light tragedy'.I am inclined to go with the later.I simply saw no humor in it, but it had a balanced and mostly just resolution, so it was not what I would normally call tragedy.

Angelo, the Duke's deputy is self-righteous hypocrite in command during the Duke's apparent absence.One of his strap-hangers is Lucio, a vile, deceitful, and utterly plausible political climber who grasps at all above him and attempts to step on all below him.Angelo and Lucio live today as a multitude within the D.C. beltway.Isabella, Claudio, Juliet, and Mariana are victims of these base and contemptable political hacks.Vincentio is a brave man caught in the middle, who helps out Isabella at the risk of his own future.The Duke leaves his deputy in charge as he pretends to go off, allegedly on a diplomatic mission.He remains in disguise to see the true nature of his deputy, and hurries out of disguise faster than he would have liked.

The story is grim, but the characters ring true.Good people at odds with vile men in power, and the vile men have deceived a good leader.Deputy's abusing their bosses' power.A man who accepts that doing the right thing is probably a career killer, while a two-faced, lick-spittle, sycophant appears to have a bright future.But with all this, the ending is as bright as can be hoped for.

A great play, but more satisfying than pleasurable.

One I saw performed, so I love this play
In order to truly appreciate Shakespeare's genius, I find it beneficial to see the plays performed.It makes the reading of the play later so much more enjoyable.This play is a wonderful tragic comedy.It is probably the darkest of all his comedies.Each of the characters faces his own epiphany and they are forced to come to terms with their own morality, as well as their own mortality.The play is gloomy and pessimistic.The play is set in Vienna.It forces the watcher of the play to reexamine all these issues in his or her own life.Very worthwhile.

Measure for Measure
Measure for Measure can best be described as Romeo and Juliet but with a happy ending. Or perhaps the sequel to Romeo and Juliet if the two hadn't taken such drastic measures (ha-ha!) at the end. In fact, the woman whose lover is short for this world is named Juliet and the play is once more set in Italy (though this time in Venice).

The play pokes fun at sex in and out of marriage and the "oldest profession" but beyond all the bawdy jokes, is a cautionary tale against morality based government. Juliet's lover, Claudio, is soon to be hanged for getting Juliet pregnant. It's an old law on the books, not enforced for ages until the Duke hands over the city to his would-be successor.
While the play may have been written at the turn of the seventeenth century, it is still relevant and on topic.

A Hero With a Swollen Ego, But Still A Decent Play
This is a darker comedy of Shakespeare's that was never so popular (except briefly in the 1700s). If you are willing to see past the fact that the hero (Duke Vincentio) is essentially playing God, it is an interesting play. Duke Vincentio is supposedly leaving for awhile, and he leaves Angelo in charge. Well, in comes the case of Claudio. Claudio has gotten his fiance Juliet pregnant before their wedding. (They still love each other, but they are not married yet.)

Angelo is outraged at Claudio and feels that Claudio must be executed. Claudio's sister Isabella (who is in the process of becoming a nun) pleads for mercy, and Angelo says he will consider it if Isabella agrees to sleep with him. Naturally, Isabella refuses. One character flaw she has is that when her brother asks her to consider it, she rebukes him in a fierce manner. Isaac Asimov put it best when he said: "She might not give into Claudio, but she might at least sympathize with his fear of death, and forgive him his human weakness. She does not...Isabella shrieks at her brother."

Moving on, disguised as a friar, the duke calms Isabella down and tells her that Claudio may yet be saved. He tells her to agree to Angelo's demands, but Mariana (a woman Angelo left sometime ago) will go in her place. At the end of 3.2, the Duke gives an interesting passage on hypocrisy: "Shame to him whose cruel striking, / kills for faults of his own liking" (3.2.270-271).

Later, there is an element of dark comedy when the Duke plans to have an older prisoner Barnadine killed in Claudio's place, but Barnadine is so drunk, he comically refuses the directions that will lead to his execution. (So much for that plan!)

One thing I did not like is that the Duke knows he is going to save Claudio, but he decides to play God and tell Isabella that Claudio is dead, but she will be satisfied. By the end of the 4th act, we learn that Angelo has slept with Mariana (thinking she was Isabella)and he starts to show some elements of a conscience.

By the 5th act, the duke is still playing God and allowing Isabella to think that Claudio is dead, and intending to go through with Angelo'saccusations. But eventually, all is revealed. Claudio is alive and pardoned. Even Barnadine will be pardoned. Angelo must also marry Mariana.

Many people feel Angelo got off too easy, but remember, this is a comedy. And as Isaac Asimov put it: "...many critics (as savage as Angelo) condemn the play because they want to see the man hanged. Yet is it only for those we sympathize with that mercy is to be sought? ...It is precisely to those whom we hate that we must show mercy, if the word is to have any meaning at all." ... Read more

Old, interesting but out of date.
Wilson's book is now a half century old.In its time and for quiet a while, it was the standard one volume text.But time, archaeology and knowledge marches on.Wilson is certainly a good read and for the study of Egypt an important one, but much has changed in the field.I mention only the emphasis on hydrolics as a conditions factor of Egyptian life, and our increasing understanding of the interrelationship between Egypt and Africa, as examples. Many points covered by Wilson have also seen new theories and ideas emerge and be accepted.Read with historical understanding of the field of Egyptology and caution.

Best all around book on Ancient Egypt
Of all the one volume surveys of Ancient Egypt that I've read, this remains my favorite for its easy, flowing style. It may be old, but it doesn't seem a bit dated. I reread this book periodically and wouldrecommend it strongly. It is enjoyable as well as informative. ... Read more

Naturalist in China
This is one of the best field guides I have ever seen. The plates (61 plates)are beautifully illustrated and very accurate. Even though it will be a few years before I visit China, I wanted to purchase this field guide to become familiar with their mammals and where to find them. Besides wonderful illustrations of the mammals, the text is filled with great information. Each species account is accompanied with a range map showing the distribution of that mammal. Under the mammal's name is included the Chinese script of the mammal and an English translation of what that script sounds like. This is an ingenious inclusion, because for travelers looking for specific mammals, they only need to point to the script and people can help them. The text also includes taxonomic keys to assist in identifying mammals that are closely related. About the only thing that I didn't like was the fact that it only comes in hardcover. This is a personal thing because all of my other field guides are paperback, which makes them lighter to carry while traveling. But even with the hardcover, this field guide is a wonderful resource and learning tool for the mammals of China. ... Read more

Justice under seige
Excellent novel by a gifted writer."Spider Season" continues the Benjamin Justice series whose flawed and conflicted protagonist (of the title name) has just published an account of his turbulent--and sometimes violent--life.The book seems to stir up a veritable spider's nest of reactions which have Justice under attack from several quarters at once. Benjamin Justice's own responses to these attacks are often irrational and self-defeating, making him an increasingly tragic figure through most of the book and making the story's eventual ending murky, at best.

While author John Morgan Wilson takes the novel's scenario pretty close to over-the-top, with extreme characters and hard to believe coincidences and plot zig-zags, the very fine writing (narrative and dialogue) and the well-sketched Southern California setting, ultimately make the story line digestible and enjoyable.

Of particular interest to this reader, there are redemption and personal connections that bring some peace to the very long-suffering protagonist in the end. The Benjamin Justice series is a very fine one indeed, reminiscent of the classic gay detective stories by Joe Hansen, with Dave Brandstetter as protagonist in the same Southern California setting.

Justice deals with his past

Benjamin Justice is winding up an author tour following the publication of his memoir, Deep Background: The True Story of a Disgraced Journalist and the Pulitzer Scandal that Destroyed Him. The publicity results in the appearance of a skinhead motorcyclist, the reason for whose attentions Justice can't figure out. (I did, fairly early, but won't spoil it!). Then there are the threatening postcards from an old (though unknown to Justice) "admirer", who had an affair with an older Hollywood interior designer and may or may not have been responsible for his death. (It's this character's penchant for spiders that gives the book its name.)

Justice continues to fight his demons, and a rival journalist seems intent on bringing him back down into the alcoholic gutter from which he had dragged himself. At the same time, he is reconnecting with Ismael Aragon, who has left the priesthood and is coming to terms with his own homosexuality, an exploration with which Justice would be glad to help him.

Although the Benjamin Justice series is shelved among "mysteries", this one really isn't. It's really more about how Justice deals with unexpected revelations from his past, and with the changes in his present. So those who pick it up expecting a mystery may be a bit disappointed, but I've always felt that Wilson is better at characterization than plotting, so no disappointment on my end.

He's Back in Full Form
Benjamin Justice is back.After a somewhat disappointing Rhapsody in Blood, Spider Season returns to the Benjamin Justice that we "Love to hate." Benjamin has just had his autobiography published and much of the guilt that he has tried to forget about his past returns in new disguises. This is the first Justice novel that I have read where I was both laughing and crying. Wilson really knows how to pull your emotional strings. Some violence occurs, but that is part of what makes Justice who he is. Justice falls in love and tragedy lurks throughout the novel.This is one of Wilson's best.

A fine installment to the Benjamin Justice series
Spider Season will not disappoint fans of the Benjamin Justice series. This book, like all by this author, offers the reader suspense, humor, and great character development. I look forward to the next in this series.

A welcome return
It's great to have another Benjamin Justice book on our shelves. This much anticipated eighth outing of disgraced reporter, Benjamin Justice, does not fail to satisfy those of us who are fans.
This has been a strong story from the first book and I'm sure we all hope the somewhat ambiguous ending will lead to another Justice story.
Some have criticised this latest book for being slow or predictable but come on, what do you want? There's nothing I enjoy more than reading a story that takes its time to develop. Spider Season is a very exciting book at times and I, for one, appreciated the occassional slowing down to get my pulse rate down! And reminding us of what went before is always welcome.
John Morgan Wilson has, over eight books, developed an engaging and real character who's a bit sexy too. I thank him for many hours of enjoyable reading and can't wait for the next one. ... Read more

Very noir Los Angeles
One of the earlier titles in the excellent Benjamin Justice series by John Morgan Wilson.This is the continuing saga of the hard-luck journalist who has fallen into sleuthing as he sorts out his troubled personal life.Justice has lived through the worst of the AIDS epidemic, losing the love of his life in the process and subsequently hitting a downward spiral professionally. Author Wilson puts his West Hollywood-based protagonist into frequent dark and violent contexts, but never fails to include redemptive moments for this sympathetic anti-hero who has lost much personally and professionally.

In "Justice at Risk,"Ben Justice is hired to write a TV documentary on an aspect of HIV/AIDS that quickly leads to his involvement with two murders that appear to be related to the project.Police brutality, the plight of the transgendered, gay sex clubs and compromised journalists figure importantly in the story line. Justice runs a gauntlet of assaults, emotional stress and the loss and injury of two important friends before the novel closes with resolution of the murders and some justice (small "j").
