"Black Elk opens the Lakota sacred hoop to a comic humanism for everyone. His book will stretch the common definition of shamanism and lift the Buckskin Curtain to the characters behind the great visions."--Kenneth Lincoln (author of Native American Renaissance) in the San Francisco Chronicle. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Empty Your Cup
If you are a non-Native American and have a strong desire to understand more about their culture, this is a good book to start. You must approach it with an open mind.
I am truly appreciative thatWilliam Lyon, as he explained so well in his excellent preface, remained faithful to the narration of Wallace Black Elk. Thus, you will literally sit next to Black Elk and listen to this medicine man, a shaman. ""when you come from that university to the lodge, you 're back in kindergarden." This is exactly how I felt. This book makes me realize how little I know about the real story about Native Americans. This one istold by a Native American and not an unaccurate history book. Wallace Black Elk truly helped me understand the values and the sacredness of the Native American Way of Life. Through his eyes, I can now appreciated the ceremony of the Chanunpa ( sacred pipe), and so much more . I learned so much about the selfless life of a shaman whose only goal is to comfort and heal without expecting any moneys in return. There is no school of shamanism. It is a long personal and trying journey. In the end, what truly amazed me is the stength of his spirit. He never gave up his belief and practive in spite of the "white" man's effort to divide , confuse and brainwash his people.page 27 " Then those black robes, like Father Fagan, they would give us a rough time also. If we didn't go to churchfour times a month, they would hold back our food rations. So if we missed church, just once or twice, there would be no commodities issued to us, and we would starve. So we would have to wait until the next month make those four churches. Then they would give that food to us. So they used that food to expand their membership or to prevent us from worshiping Tunkashila ( the Creator) and having our Chanunpa ceremonies, and lodges."
I was also very intrigued by his perception of life: we are all "related to everything that exists". It reminded me of this quote from Chief Seattle "Man did not weave the Web of Life, he is merely a strand in it. What he does to the Web he does to himself."
With this new knowledge,I am now readyto read " Black Elk Speaks" by John Neighardt. Wallace Black Elk refers to him as one of his spiritual Grandfather. I am also ready to learn more about the poor condition of life on reservations and how we can help. [...]

4-0 out of 5 stars Authentic
I did some work as a "Wasichu" with a Lakota Sioux woman in a therapist's situation. In the beginning, I thought she was of Middle Eastern descent, to be honest. She turned out to be a shaman, as well, but never brought it up, and only acknowledged the fact when I asked about it, due to what I was suddenly seeing in my sessions; it wasn't until I had seen her a few times that the results of the sessions began to bring about things that directly related to the issues Mr. Black Elk brings up in this book.I only read this book after I had gone through my experiences with this woman. All I can say is that what I read in this book rang clearly true with what I was experiencing at the time.

Despite what a few have said about this book being a "sell out," I have to say that I feel fortunate to have been a white boy getting to read the things I read, and am thankful for the book that Mr. Black Elk has written, because his message is one of knowledge that he evidently wants all people of all races to understand. He's certainly not concerned about "race." His desire to share knowlege should not be disregarded or deplored, depite the reality that it only scratches the surface.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very positive book
Two people on here are claiming that Wallace Black Elk is not his real name, and rather a popular name that he is capitalizing on in order to make more book sales. They say that he is not a true Lakota, but instead a "New Ager" who is false and lying.

This may or may not be true, but if it is, I don't feel that he has done much harm in any of it. This book was very honest, very true, and it was very helpful to me. Wallace Black Elk is obviously trying to spread a positive message to the people, and he does it in a very deep and thoughtful way. If he did anything like those people say he did, it may have been a mistake, but he seems to have done it with good intention.

All that aside, I found the book to be very good. You can tell that this book was written by someone who is not used to (or not trained in) using the conventional method of writing American literature, which can be a nice breath of fresh air in many ways. His writing is open, kind, and lyrical.

One of the great things I think that this book does, is point out the actual value of American "education" and how much it really helps people. Luckily, I read this book right when I graduated from high school, and I was deciding where to go to college. This book made me realize that college was not going to feed my spirit and longing for life. Instead I decided to walk my own path, instead of the path that someone else had written down for me, and thus far it has worked extremely well.

The book is full of refreshing (and sometimes comical) perspectives on western civilization. I plan one day to attend a Chanunpa ceremony. You may want to attend one as well after you read this book :)

5-0 out of 5 stars LEARN FROM THOSE WHO KNOW
Stepping Off the Edge: Learning & Living Spiritual Practice
Buy this for Wallace Black Elk's picture on the cover--and for everything inside. Black Elk's state is written all over his face. The man's soul comes right through this book. My spiritual teacher, who was from India, told us to study masters who could impart the experience of God, not people who wrote about people who had experience. Black Elk fits the category of those who know.

Product Description
For nearly 700 years debate has raged over the true nature of William Wallace and his role in Scotland's turbulent history. Was he the 'Braveheart' of Blind Harry's legendary account, the bold, but savage hero of the Scottish wars? Or, as some contemporary chroniclers attested, nothing but a villainous thief and vagrant fugitive? This book draws on a wide range of contemporary and modern sources to look behind the figure of legend to find Wallace's true character. These superb photographs trace Wallace's life from his modest upbringing in south-west Scotland to his remarkable victory as a 'guerilla' leader and military commander at Stirling Bridge, and to his eventual betrayal, capture and painful execution seven years later. This is an essential travel companion for a journey through the landscapes and places associated with Wallace in Scotland and Northern England, and a vibrant new insight into the reality of Scotland's most famous battlefield hero. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The real William Wallace
The combination of Alan Young's writing and Michael Stead's picture help bring to life and make Wallace more of a tangible person in my mind's eye.Mr. Young's biography is a nice and balanced presentation of the facts of a man with enormous strengths and some faults.I have seen the movie Braveheart and read many of the other books which make Wallace an almost unbelievable hero. This book brings balance to the history and tells of a passionate patriot dedicated to his life's end to his country and its people. This presentation make's him more of a real man and real hero to me.Wallace did his best as he got caught among the church and the Noble families' power plays. The Stewarts, Bruces and Comyns all support themselves, family interests and lands many times before their country. But not Wallace. He had nothing to loose but his life and a Nation to gain, for which he paid the ultimate price. He went from outlaw, to Knight to Guardian of Scotland to outlaw and finally wrongly executed by Edward I.Wallace is a true Martyr and patriot. This book is a fine balanced historical tribute to William Wallace.

5-0 out of 5 stars In the Footsteps of William Wallace
There have been many books written on William Wallace and all provide a look into the history of Scotlands greatest hero.In the back of my mind I have often tried to imagine a picture with those written words and now the reader can get that "In the Footsteps of William Wallace". Each part of the life of William Wallace and the history of the "Wars of Independence" are described and images are provided in related photographs and maps...a most excellent book for those with an interest in this great hero!! ...
