Product Description
From city high-rises to seaside cottages, the great manor homes of England to the smallest beach house on the other side of the Atlantic, the beauty of the Cabbages & Roses brand is the gentle but highly visible vintage design. This lavish book embodies all locations - country, city and coast. Chapters encompass Classic Country, Modern City, Island Country and Outdoor Country. Homes that bring together the old and the new, evoking the atmosphere of each season, sit beside city spaces where urban living combines with vintage style - think faded florals and ticking fabrics softening an industrial space, splashes of colour to enliven it and contrasting textures to add interest. Coastal dwellings are fresh, breezy and dreamy - beautifully suited for beach living. The book shows that the country can come to the city, that the city can benefit from coastal settings and that Cabbages & Roses is a gentle, unassuming and, above all, beautiful asset to any home as it easily complements all environments. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Ok, not the best one, but Ok
I really love Cabbages & Roses, and I have all the Christina Strutt' s books, I think.
I especially loved her guide to green housekeeping, which is more than interesting.
This book has really beautiful pictures and some ideas are interesting, but it is true
that it looks more like a gorgeous brochure for all their fabrics. Each room is different,
with different styles, the only common points are the Cabbages & Roses fabrics, which, sometimes,
look a little weird in these kinds of situations.
By the way, even if the pictures are great, I don't always like the styles of these rooms.
It is more like they had to make a book to make a book, not really to tell a new story.
I give four stars, because this book is pleasant after all, and I like the author, but if it had
been written by someone unknown, I think I would have just passed it...

3-0 out of 5 stars AT HOME WITH COUNTRY
I expected more ideas from this book due to the cover...I thought I would see several photos and ideas on traditional country as well as more updated visions of country. While some photos are nice, it is more of a fabric catalogue for the company CABBAGES & ROSES.This would be okay, if they stretched out their ideas with more interiors...I was not very impressed or inspired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!!!
I bought this book after seeing it on Design Sponge and it did not disappoint! The book depicts a number of different homes in this book -- beach houses, country houses, lofts, farms - even a houseboat! There is even an apartment in NYC, it really shows that you can give your home a country feel no matter where you live. This book is so inspirational - the look is so accessible and homey, yet really put together and elegant. Highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars At Home with Country
This is one of the most beautiful home design books I've ever seen! The romantic English country styling that Christina, and her company, Cabbages & Roses, are so well known for in Europe isbeautifully showcased in her new book, her fifth book! This one makes me want to re-design my home, the gorgeous floral prints that add a sophisticated comfort to each location are stunning. Its wonderfully written too, the flow of both words and visuals is tremendously inviting...a must have for home decor fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting!
If you love cottage and country decorating that is fresh and inspired, you'll love to see how it's interpreted in this book. The rooms are authentic with an alluring softness, with that hard-to-pin-down charm that you know when you see it.

This book illustrates the variety of up-to-date country/cottage styles, and is a delight to study. If you like these styles, this book would be a lovely and lively addition to your home library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great ideas
I love to reduce, reuse, recycle - this book gives many ideas for doing something fun and useful with the garage sale, thrift shop, flea market items that find their way into our homes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming!
I do a lot of crafting so don't need a lot of directions, just incredible thought provoking, inspiring, make you feel like you are there breathing the country air, romantic. So... this is one of those books I sift through over and over again, love the book covers with the ties, love the fabrics and the country prints and the sigh...pillows! Absolutely adore this book, so glad I purchased in spite of the reviews. It is trully one of my very favorites what to sew, make with fabric books. Don't be fooled by the 'crafting vintage style, charming projects for home and garden' title, this is all fabric projects, not beeswax candles or other neat ones, but all dreamy blue flowers on white linen, pin stripe, country fabrics that dreams are made of.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, could be better
This book has some really nice pictures, and I do love the fabrics she uses throughout.(Cabbages & Roses, out of England.)The book could have been more creative with it's project ideas, and DEFINATELY could have used better "instructions". All that said, I LOVED the ideas for covering sturdy boxes with pretty fabric and for covering books with pretty fabric.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is not worth purchasing.
A few pretty pictures and little substance.I purchased this book and her "Decorating Vintage Style". Very few ideas in either book - pretty cover, a few pictures, very little text.Neither are worth the purchase price. If you are looking for a vintage decorating or craft book, any other than these would be a better investment. For example, in the craft book, she shows, with very limited instructions and a picture or two, how to make a duvet cover. Then you use the exact same technique to make a pillow cover. For your next craft, you use the exact same technique to make an herbal slumber pillow. At 92 pages and just a few "crafts", you really are loosing when she spends a quarter of the book "teaching" (very loose definition here) you to use the same technique over and over.I think she was just using filler to get a book out.I was extremely disappointed in both of her books.

You are also given "instructions" on how to make a celebration skirt.Later in the book you find the exact same instructions on how to make a summer skirt. She did the same thing with a few blankets, too.You will not glean any new ideas from this book, I'm quite sure. And if you are a complete beginner at sewing, her instructions are not sufficient. If you are an experienced sewist or crafts person, you've probably already made everything in the book.

The book contains "30 stunning projects that will make a room loving and warm".They are:
Scalloped shelf edging, simple slipcovers, summer curtain, basin skirt (using velcro hang gathered fabric from sink), heart shape cushion (cut a heart shape - stuff), beaded pot cover (trim a piece of fabric with lace and beads - hang over a pot), storage boxes (purchased boxes covered with your fabric), fabric covered basket, greeting cards (fold a piece of cardstock - decorate - my children do this all the time), cozy cushions (instructions repeated throughout book on different projects), clothespin board (nail clothespins to a board), dog blanket, dog bowl mat (cover board with some oilcloth), herbal slumber pillow (same techniques as cushions), duvet cover (basically same technique as cushions), summer skirt, scented sachets - sew a tube, tie with a ribbon, laundry bags (sew a sack - insert a cord)), plaid teddy bear (cut out teddy bear shape - stuff - my children thought it was kind of ugly), celebration skirt (same as summer skirt but embroider with running stitches Merry Christmas (or something else) along hem), tab headed curtains (same as summer curtains basically), fabric roses (strips of unhemmed fabrics gathered into a "rose", gardener's apron (you make your own pattern from looking at her picture), linen-covered journal, frayed napkins (edge stitch pieces of linen and fray. She does not tell you to pull a thread to get these on grain as it will not turn out if you don't), lined picnic basket (using your own pattern cut fabric to line your wire or wicker basket), child's play tent (edge finish some fabric and hang over a clothesline), beach rug (edge finish some fabric). That's it.The same techniques repeated.

Any of my children's crafts books are cheaper and contain much more in the way of ideas and instructions.

Good points:
The photos are nice, as the author used to be a stylist for magazines. Her fabrics are pretty too.She owns Cabbages and Roses and uses her products throughout the book. ... Read more

Product Description
Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:process of radiation as heat. We have defined heat as it exists in hot bodies, and we have seen that all heat is of the same kind. But the radiation between bodies differs from heat as we have denned it—1st, in not making the body hot through which it passes ; 2nd, in being of many different kinds. Hence we shall generally speak of radiation, and when we speak of radiant heat we do not mean to imply the existence of a new kind of heat, but to consider radiation in its thermal aspect.ON THE DIFFERENT PHYSICAL STATES OF BODIES.Bodies are found to behave in different ways under the action of forces. If we cause a longitudinal pressure to act oh a body in one diiection by means of a pair of pincers or a vice, the body being free to move in all other directions, we find that if the body is a piece of cold iron there is very little effect produced, unless the pressure be very great; if the body is a piece of india-rubber, it is compressed in the direction of its length and bulges out at the sides, but it soon comes into a state of equilibrium, in which it continues to support the pressure; but if we substitute water for the india-rubber we cannot perform the experiment, for the water flows away laterally, and the jaws of the pincers come together without having exerted any appreciable pressure.Bodies which can sustain a longitudinal pressure, however small that pressure may be, without being supported by a lateral pressure, are called solid bodies. Those which cannot do so are called fluids. We shall see that in a fluid at rest the pressure at any point must be equal in all directions, and this pressure is called the pressure of the fluid. There are two great classes of fluids. If we put into a closed vessel a small quantity of a fluid of the first class, such as water, i... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book truly romantic things to sew!
Lovely things to sew, great ideas, easy instructions and detailed. Good for a beginner like myself

4-0 out of 5 stars Sewing Experience Required
I do like this book and I have completed several projects from it.Some of the instructions aren't so clear.Be careful especially with the basket liner project.I lined a infant basket and it took several attempts before it came out just ok.However the projects are still simple. There are a lot of window covering patterns in this book. Not as "romantic" as the title suggests but there are some useful sewing patterns/instructions available in this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice idea book
I found the book full of great ideas - but felt it was like so many other books. I didn't find many new ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Timeless, and Green
Christina Strutt suggests throwing nothing away without first considering its future usefulness. The instructions are clear, easy to understand and well illustrated. I especially like the bucket bag pattern. I plan to make them for my daughters to use as diaper bags (adding a cell phone pocket to the lower end of the handle). Nice assortment of sweet and simple gifts to make.Glad I purchased this book. Recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars How to make simple or ugly things with beautiful fabric
I don't usually pan craft books, because there's so much out there to learn, I can usually glean something. But not in this one. I would never waste beautiful vintage fabrics on most of these projects, and if I did, I'd consider it step 1. As in, I stitched the simple pillow, now let's embellish it. ... Read more

Product Description
Lord Rayleigh (1842-1919) won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1904. His early research was in optics and acoustics but his first published paper, from 1869, was an explanation of Maxwell's electromagnetic theory. In 1871, he related the degree of light scattering to wavelength (part of the explanation for why the sky is blue), and in 1872 he wrote his classic Theory of Sound (not included here). He became a Fellow of the Royal Society and inherited his father's peerage in 1873. Rayleigh nevertheless continued groundbreaking research, including the first description of Moiré interference (1874). In 1881, while president of the London Mathematical Society (1878-1880) and successor to Maxwell as Cavendish Professor of Experimental Physics at Cambridge (1879-1884), Rayleigh published a paper on diffraction gratings which led to improvements in the spectroscope and future developments in high-resolution spectroscopy. This volume contains papers from 1869 to 1881. ... Read more
