Product Description

The British architect James Frazer Stirling (1924–1992) stimulated impassioned responses among both supporters and detractors, and he continues to be the subject of fierce debate. He earned international renown through such innovative—and frequently controversial—projects as the Leicester University Engineering Building (1959–63); the History Faculty building at Cambridge University (1964–67); the Neue Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart (1977–84); the Clore Gallery at Tate Britain (1984); and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Harvard University (1979–84). Stirling was also a visiting professor at the Yale School of Architecture, where he trained and influenced many of the current leaders in the field.

Fully illustrated with previously unpublished documents and new photography from the James Stirling/Michael Wilford Archive at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal, this book allows for a close examination of design drawings, photographs, and models spanning Stirling’s entire career. These materials deepen our understanding of the influences, early formation, approach, and process of an architect whose work resists labeling. Filled with in-depth analytical and critical presentations of exemplary projects and their reception, the volume reveals Stirling to be a remarkably informed and consistent thinker and writer on architecture.

Product Description
James Stirling's death in 1992 cut short the fruitful later phase of a creative career which began in the 1950s. Stirling inaugurated this second phase in the 1970s with his ambitious urban-planning proposals for the area of the Cathedral and the Wailraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne. In 1975 he established his main London office in partnership with Michael Wilford. International recognition resulted in many spectacular commissions for the team, consolidating their reputation and their influence on a younger generation of architects. This is a retrospective documentation of their achievement. Critical appraisals, technical data and extensive illustrations record many important buildings, including the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart; the Science Centre in Berlin; the Clore Gallery for the Turner Collection at the Tate Gallery, London; and the Performing Arts Center at Cornell University, New York State. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Concise Yet Comprehensive Introduction
This review is written from the perspective of both novice and professional. I bought this book in April 2005 when my knowledge on thermodynamics was sketchy but my fasination on this machine was quite immense. As the book's title implies, this little piece of work is an introduction. Hence, please do not expect in-depth details or sophisticated technical treatments as these can be found in other texts on Stirling engines. However, for those who want to build a solid foundation in thermodynamics and the theory of heat engines in general including the mechanics of Stirling engines, this monograph is a great introduction.

I was impressed by way Dr. Senft struck a balance between essential thermodynamic theory and its relevence to the fundamental design of Stirling machine. For example, a brief introduction and some technical treatments of Carnot Theory is introduced as early as possible in the book as this is essential for a proper exposition of heat engines, especially those operate with Stirling cycle. Without this, non-technical readers can only grasp a mere mechanical movements and their description rather than a clear understanding of the basic theory that underpins Stirling machine.

Another point that worths mentioning is its comprehensiveness at an introductory level. How Stirling engines are classified according to their basic physical configurations and pros and cons of these configulations, an exemplified illustration, and the history of their development are organized in a cogent and highly readable manner.

I personally have to admit that this little monograph is a great help to develop my solid understanding on both Stirling machine and heat engines in general. It is a great primer and fun to read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction to learning and building a Stirling engine
This is an outstanding succinct introduction to Stirling Engines. These engines are very intriguing but to get started quickly you should have the right books.

This has a moderately detailed yet approachable introduction to how these work and the basic design criteria. It's not a design book. It's not a detailed theory book. It's an approachable yet not too simplistic introduction.

Following that are very detailed plans for a relatively simple to build 3engines. Note by relatively simple I mean drill press with perhaps a milling vise near minimum. Note you can source some of the more critical parts off the internet.

This book also has some great tips/tools such as for lapping the pistons - the first detailed yet approachable treatise I've seen in any book on this important area.

Along with this book I would also recommend An Introduction to Low Temperature Differential Stirling Engines for your first forays into this other fascinating area of Stirling engines.

See my Introduction to and Making Basic Stirling Engines list.

2-0 out of 5 stars For Novice Only
The book provides very little engineering data. Hobbits who are interested in playing with a model for fun may find the book amusing. Engineers who are interested in designing Stirling machines will find it useless.

3-0 out of 5 stars General Overview of Stirling Engines with Examples
This compact little book provides a good general overview of Stirling Engine design and operation. It provides many illustrations which both explain the operation and provide examples of practical Stirling Engines.Dr. Senft also included a very brief description of the thermodynamic principles of these engines which includes an explaination of Carnot Efficiency. If you are looking for a mathmatical treatment or engineering text, look elsewhere; this book provides an interesting, easy to read high level introduction. I liked it but it could use a little more detail. ... Read more

Product Description
James Stirling's untimely death in 1992 cut short an immensely fruitful creative career which began in the 1950s. One of the most inventive - and controversial - British architects of the post-war period, Stirling came to international attention in the early 1960s with the completion of Leicester University Engineering Building - now recognized as a landmark in 20th-century architecture. This critical survey explores Stirling's early work, illustrating and analyzing 38 buildings and projects dating from 1950 to 1974. The book begins with an introduction assessing Stirling's early development and considering his place in the architecture of the time. The main body of the volume contains 670 drawings, plans and photographs supported by critical discussions of the projects which include residential buildings, student accommodation, academic institutions and industrial plants, interspersed with statements from Stirling himself. ... Product Description

James Frazer Stirling was among the most innovative forces of contemporary architecture. With his partner, Michael Wilford (since 1963), Stirling realized numerous projects in which he combined a historic sensibility with a creative architectural language. Druing the eighties the office became a major representative of Post-Modernism with the Stuttgart State Gallery, the extension of the London Tate Gallery and the Science Center in Berlin. Since Stirling's death in 1992, Michael Wilford has headed the office and continues the series of pathbreaking projects -for example, the Lowry Center in Salford and the planned British Embassy in Berlin. The present monograph in the Studio Paperback series documents all important buildings and projects. The author, Robert Maxwell, was Dean of the famous Princeton School of Architecture and has written numerous publications in the field of architectural history and theory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Copiously illustrated review of 58 major works
This is a concise and copiously illustrated paperback survey of all major buildings and projects from 1950 to 1997 published under ISBN: 3764352914 by Birkhäuser (Basel...) andISBN: 0817952914 by Birkhäuser (Boston) on 207 pages in English and German side by side.Following 17 pages of analysis about thearchitect's style, each of the presented 58 works is headed by a description from just a few lines to over a page long followed by from one to several illustrations depending on work's scope. All of several hundreds only B&W (many multi-picture) illustrations - many of them technical (plans, sections, sketches, elevations, etc.), but also B&W photos of a good quality - are well balanced, superbly crisp and perfectly legible.A biography, selected bibliography, list of works, etc. on several pages end it.Like all from the Studio Paperback series, it is solid among architectural monographs even of a bigger size. Similar to smaller books from the Works and Projects series published by Gustavo Gili (GG) in English and Spanish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing
Few Americans are familiar with James Stirling's work which is a shame. He was one of the three or four great high-tech architects. Maybe not as high-tech as Rogers or Foster yet maybe more intuitive and with more feel. His work also had a post-modern flair. He was a few years ahead of some ofthe most famous architects of today and if you look closely enough atStirling's work you may notice how they all may have been influenced byStirling. The book itself is a good representation of his work but thephotos are somewhat small and in black and white. The book gets 5 starsbecause Stirling was a master. ... Read more

Product Description

James Stirling (1924-1992) was, arguably, the most influential and controversial post-war British architect. Stirling’s reputation is based primarily on such seminal buildings as the Leicester University Engineering Building (1959-63, with James Gowan), at one end of his career, and the Neue Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (1977-83, with Michael Wilford) at the other. Although he denied both labels, his work is seen as central to New Brutalism and Post-Modernism and his buildings attracted commentary and theory from the leading architectural thinkers of the day (including Frampton, Tafuri, Eisenman and Banham). Despite his significance, however, there has been very little recent research or creative re-interpretation of his work.

This fascinating insight into Stirling’s work presents previously unavailable writings by him as well as new research on his early career, including:

  • 'The Black Notebook' – the journal he kept in the mid-1950s
  • the recorded talk he gave to the 'Team 10' group in 1962, as well as the discussion that followed that talk
  • three sets of notes for lectures he gave
  • an interview with Stirling and Gowan
  • essays by the editor placing the texts in the context of Stirling’s early work and discussing Stirling’s relation to Le Corbusier.

Profusely illustrated, with many photographs taken by Stirling himself, this book gives fresh understanding of Stirling’s early career and the reasons why avant-garde architecture in post-war Britain became so widely influential outside the country.

THEY'RE SWARMING FOR THE
KILL...AND WE ARE THE PREY!

Everybody knows how despicable the alien Fibians are. Allies of the fanatic Mollie rebels against the human Commonwealth, they show no mercy, they have no remorse, and they find human flesh delectable -- at least when served live. Fielding a gigantic starfleet against Earth and its colonies, they march like the giant spiders they resemble through humanity's nightmares, and soon they will march across its devastated worlds.

When the captain of the starship Invincible is incapacitated after a Fibian attack, only Peter Raeder -- former fighter pilot, starship flight engineer, and unorthodox hero of the war against the Mollies -- can be entrusted with command of the ship. His mission: to track down the alien raiders who took out his captain, and then to start hitting the enemy behind the lines.

It's a suicide mission, and Raeder knows it...until the fortunes of battle drive him deeper into alien space than he'd ever intended to go, the Invincible too damaged ever to return home. There he discovers that the monstrous Fibians may not be monsters after all... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read
Each book in the Flight Engineer series was an enjoyable read. I picked up the first in the series because James Doohan was the co-author. I read all three because I enjoyed them. These are not groundbreaking or deep thinking sci-fi books. They are just fun outerspace action adventures that show a nice sense of humor here and there.

If you are looking for something fun to read you can't go wrong with these books since you can get them used on Amazon at very reasonable prices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good story, good series... wish there could be more
Good story, good series... wish there could be more (and that saids it all), but of course not very likely.

Not a Trek story at all, if that is stopping you from reading it now you don't have that excuse. Good enjoyable space story with too few of it's kind now-a-days.

1-0 out of 5 stars A good read
I read all three of the books in this series and really wanted to see more.its best to read them in order or a lot of thiongs might not makes so much sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't wait for #4----
I am enjoying this series very much. I held off at first thinking that it was trying to just build on Mr. Doohan's reputation and that it was a "trekkie" book.I was so wrong. It is a series all of its own and a good one, at that.Try it, you'll like it!!!BUT--begin with #1 andproceed in order.Much better idea.

4-0 out of 5 stars Straight, simple and fun!
It's a nice book with not much to say about. I felt good reading it. A bit short perhaps. I recommend it fore those who want a story with ht "sparkle" in the eye. ... Read more
