5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Book with Lovely Patterns
This book has several patterns that I plan on attempting in the next few projects. However, when I was considering the purchase of the book, I was unable to find a complete listing of the designs included in the book (always helpful when purchasing something like this). You can find part of the list, along with correspondeing pictures of the designs at the Beth Russell Needlepoint website under "Needlepoint Books."However, in an attempt to help other Amazon-ers, here is a list of the designs:

*Compton
*Hare
*Fox
*Woodpecker
*Honeysuckle (bell pull)
*Flowerpot
*Jackfield Rose
*African Marigold
*Jasmine (with an alphabet to customize)
*Pomegranate (rug)
*Morris
*Kazak (rug as well as bag w/ strap)
*Anemones
*Owls
*Rabbits
*Frog &Stork
*Annie Jack
*Bird & Leaf

The designs really are beautiful and traditional, and I think it is going to make a wonderful addition to my needlepoint books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beth Russell's Traditional Needlepoint
Very pleased with this excellent book. Wonderful illustrations and patterns.Inspiring and eye opening as I had not fully appreciated the complexity and beauty of William Morris needlepoint designs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flowers
It is a very nice book if one is looking to do needlepoint with designs of flowers. It is very well explained and has very nice pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful designs, difficult charts
I'll start by saying that I LOVE Beth Russell's interpretations of Arts and Crafts designs in this book as well as her other two. She's chosen wonderful motifs and arranged them into lovely, unique needlepoint projects. I speak from experience, as I'm now working on my third project from her books, the orange border design shown on the cover of her latest volume, worked on large canvas to make a rug. I highly recommend all three books for lovers of needlepoint, other charted needlework, arts and crafts design, or William Morris.

This book is beautifully laid out and lovely to page through and read, but its loveliness is one of its downfalls: The charts are printed in full color, without utilizing symbols to indicate yarn colors. Although this choice makes the charts pleasant to look at, the subtle differences between yarn colors are sometimes very hard to see in the charts, making working from them difficult. I spent too much time squinting at the latest chart, making little pencil dots on it to differentiate between LIGHT grey green and MEDIUM-LIGHT grey green!

I'll be proud of the resulting product, and will forgive Russell's editorial choice. Do consider buying this book, but be prepared for some challenges in using it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the designs, not crazy about the charts
I really like Beth's design's, since they are much more interesting than what you find at craft stores. If you know how much her kits cost you'll teach yourself to read charts. The main problem I have is the charts. She uses alot of similar shades andunlike some authors she doesn't use markings to differentiate them andit can cause a problem. Also it helps to get an Appleton shade card. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift enjoyed by spouse, retired farmer
This book was purchased as a belated birthday gift for my husband. He had the previous book given to him as a gift, but had personally recently purchased a 1010 John Deere and wanted to learn more about it.The local John Deere store was selling it for $45.99; needless to say, the $34.+ I paid Amazon.com was a better buy. My husband picks it up and looks at it frequently.Thank you! This is my first purchase from Amazon.com, but would surely recommend it be considered by others.

Product Description

Conservation International's Hotspots placed that organization at the forefront of global conservation efforts. Wilderness: Earth's Last Wild Places continues the efforts made in that previous volume, combining nearly 500 breathtaking images of untamed lands and rare glimpses of the people who inhabit them with the most current scientific analyses of their endangered ecosystems.

To qualify as "wilderness," the areas included must have 70 percent or more of their original vegetation, cover at least 10,000 square kilometers, and have fewer than five people per square kilometer. Wilderness identifies 37 wilderness areas around the globe—including tropical rain forests, wetlands, deserts, and arctic tundra, from Amazonia to the Congo Forests of Central Africa to the complex of North American deserts—and presents the research of nearly 200 specialists carried out over two years by Conservation International's Center for Applied Biodiversity Science with support from its Global Conservation Fund. The result is a detailed document of the biological riches that can be found in each of the wilderness areas, with chapters that describe and illustrate them, highlight the human cultures unique to each area, and explain the threats to each region and the conservation measures in place.

The result of a collaboration among CEMEX, Conservation International, and Agrupación Sierra Madre, Wilderness will enjoy the same reputation as the earlier Conservation International books—a volume that presents vital information on the earth's biodiversity and a realistic program of conservation complemented by state-of-the-art photography.

5-0 out of 5 stars The real richness of our planet
An excellent book that I whish everybody in the world would be able to see and realize that the real richness we have in our lives is nature. Help protect the last wild places

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind...
The three massive books of this series ("Megadiversity", "Hotspots", and the latest, "Wilderness.") should be considered a "must have" for every person who is concerned about the future of life on Earth. The photographs of the natural world are many and without parallel - in huge format and by the world's greatest nature photographers (Gil, Lanting, Rowell, Wolfe, etc.).The accompanying text is by no means "lite" reading - indepth description of the threats currently facing earth's last remaining wild ecosystems and how Conservation Internation is addressing those threats.

"Wilderness" also pays special attention to the human cultures that are on the brink of extinction side-by-side with the lemurs, tigers, and tamarins.

It should be noted that these are, physically, some of the largest books I have ever seen. They weigh over 20 lbs and measure 12" by 14" - not something that is easily read in bed - but still handsome and absolutely stuffed with content.

I will treasure this book (and its two sister volumes) for the rest of my life and look forward to sharing them with my children. If anything, they are a super-detailed, highly poignant accounts of the state of Earth's biosphere in 1998-2003, and what mankind was doing to both destroy and save those systems. ... Product Description
The relationship between the great Post-Impressionist artist Henri Matisse and his son, influential art dealer Pierre Matisse (1900-1989), is at the heart of this deftly revealing and moving biography, now available in paperback.

Pierre Matisse moved from France to New York in his 20s to establish a gallery, where he introduced such major European artists as Miró, Giacometti, Balthus, and Dubuffet to the United States. Renowned art critic John Russell has created a seamless narrative based on exclusive access to Pierre Matisse’s vast unpublished archives, which hold 30 years of near-daily letters between father and son as well as a vast correspondence with the artists he represented. The result is an insider’s look at the lives and creative efforts of some of the 20th century’s most important artists.Amazon.com Review
Author John Russell knew Pierre Matisse (1900-1989) personally, and after his death was invited to work in the legendary art dealer's archives. Among the treasure-trove of material was 34 years' worth of correspondence between Matisse and his father, the legendary French painter Henri Matisse (1869-1954). Russell's stately narrative draws on those letters, as well as Pierre's correspondence with the artists he represented (most notably Joan Miró, Balthus, Alberto Giacometti, and Jean Dubuffet). It reveals a remarkable intimacy between father and son, despite the fact that Pierre made his career in New York, while the elder Matisse resided in France. The naturally reserved Matisses were probably more candid in letters than they would have been in person about family crises; in addition, the correspondence provides fascinating insights into Henri's creative struggles and his shrewd business sense. Pierre is respectfully portrayed as a dealer of the old school--making a lifetime commitment to the artists he admired, regarding their works "not so much as objects of commerce, but as children ready for adoption." Russell, a former art critic for the New York Times, writes in a rather formal style that emphasizes the Matisses' links (and his own) to a vanished time, the heroic age of modern art and of the men and women who made it their mission to introduce it to the world. --Wendy Smith ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
Matisse: Father and Son has proven to be a prized addition to my book collection by giving an extended valuable insight with no known parallel.I recommend this book and fully endorse the review given by the Metropolitan Museum of Art,New York, which states "This is essential reading for anyone interested in the art of our century."I also found the book to be of immeasurable value to the practicing artist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Father and Son and Much More Besides
I enjoyed this book immensely. It was a lot different from other books about artists that I have read, in that it was written from a very different perspective. You won't find a lot of analysis here about how particular paintings were done. It isn't that kind of "art" book. It also isn't really a straight biography. Instead, you learn a lot about what it is like to be an art dealer, at least a lot about what it was like to be Pierre Matisse! I found the nuts and bolts of the business and the personalities involved to be intriguing. The best part of the book is the letters. Mr. Russell had the good fortune to have access to the extensive correspondence that Pierre had not only with his father but with other artists as well. We are talking about big leaguers such as Joan Miro, Alberto Giaccometi, Marc Chagall, etc. You learn a lot about their work habits and their personality quirks. Of course, the majority of the letters are between Henri and Pierre Matisse. From previous reading I had always had the impression that Henri Matisse was only interested in his art and paid little or no attention to his family. This book changed my mind. He clearly loved his children and grandchildren and took a lifelong interest in what they did and if they were happy. Henri Matisse emerges from this book as not just a great artist but as a very intelligent and warm person. He also had a very good sense of humor!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who would something a little different from the run-of-the-mill art book or biography. As a bonus, there are some very nice color reproductions of not just Matisse's work but of many of the other artists that Pierre Matisse represented throughout his long life.

Product Description

One of cinema's greatest directors, a virtuoso visual artist, and a genius of the suspense genre, Alfred Hitchcock (1899–1980) is universally known for such masterpieces as Strangers on a Train, Rear Window, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho, and The Birds. The author, a distinguished film critic and friend of Hitchcock's, enjoyed his full cooperation. Based on numerous interviews, with photos from the private family albums, and an in-depth study of the making of his last film, this biography of the director is as intriguing, revealing, perverse, and entertaining as any Hitchcock classic.
Amazon.com Review
It's likely that readers who have watched many of AlfredHitchcock's films can't help but have noticed how frequently hedepicts fetishism, sadism, and voyeurism. Because Hitchcock was areclusive man and a guarded interview subject, almost everyone whowrites about him turns to his work for insight into his life. Thesewriters generally conclude that the director himself was possessed bythe very pathologies that resound in his movies.

But John Russell Taylor didn't have to go that route. He wrote thisbiography with the participation and blessings of the man himself. InHitch, Taylor admits that his subject often projects hisfantasies onto the screen. He also provides a good deal of insightinto Hitchcock's domineering, obsessively courteous demeanor. But thefocus here is on the details of Hitchcock's life, the preparation andproduction of his movies, and his relationships with the countlesscinematic luminaries who worked with him, including Ingrid Bergman,Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, and James Stewart. --Raphael Shargel ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Delightful Surprise despite the Gloss
This is a wonderful glossily written biography. It is written with much gusto. This is one of the first biographies of Hitchcock that I read. I knew that Alfred Hitchcock was a great filmmaker, but his antics off-screen were equally droll. Despite the fact Hitchcock's films are superficially discussed, the author, John Russell Taylor manages to narrate Alfred Hitchcock's life and times in such a way that I could not put it down, and I read it in record time (at least for me). There are better biographies on Hitchcock out there (Donald Spoto's for instance) but this edition makes for enjoyable reading. The facts are all there but it is indeed a matter of interpretation of how the numerous anecdotes are retold that makes the difference here. Author John Russell Taylor definitely takes the high road.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
This book was a really easy read. With tales of Hitch's career and providing insight - I believe - into the man behind the much misunderstood myth.

"Hitch" is mostly filled with tales from behind the scenes rather than an examination of Hitch's craft and technique. I enjoyed it because I think knowing the PERSON behind a picture will often explain his technique better than any self-proclaimed "expert" who will often take technical necessity and make it symbolist bull.

Well written and very interesting subject matter. A must for anyone!

4-0 out of 5 stars Have her dry-cleaned
Highly readable and informative. Recommended for all Hitch fans as well as anyone interested in the history of cinema. Beyond the basic facts, there are lots of telling anecdotes and perceptive observations, such as Hitchcock's famous distinction between shock and suspense. My favorite Hitch quip:a father wrote to Hitchcock for some advice. After seeing Les Diaboliques his daughter refused to take a bath, and now after seeing Psycho she wouldn't take a shower either. "Have her dry-cleaned" was Hitchcock's cheerful reply.

2-0 out of 5 stars Many glaring omissions
Hitchcock is my very favorite film director, and I think he's definitely one of the best, if not THE best, directors ever, so I was very disappointed to read this book which only skims over Hitch's life, givingsome films barely a page or two. Taylor looks at Hitch's many movies withneither a critical or even historical eye--and many, many details are leftout, and many facts are just plain backwards, especially that"Notorious" was based on an idea provided by David O. Selznick, and that "Spellbound" started as Hitch's idea (it was in fact theother way around, with the recently depression-cured Selznick wanting tomake a film about analysis; in fact, in the few paragraphs afforded to"Spellbound," Mae Romm, Selznick's therapist who acted as anadvisor on the film--and set--isn't even mentioned!). Donald Spoto's twobooks about Hitchcock, one a film-by-film analysis and the other a straightbiography, are much better than this slight volume.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book! Really covers his films in depth. Excellent Work
The book was great it really showed his movies to the full extent. The beggining of the book(first 3 chapters) discussed his childhood, but could have went more in depth. It really makes you feel what Hitch was feallingwhen doing the movies. ... Read more

Product Description
While the major American art museums boast record attendance in six and seven figures, there are hundreds of museums across the country with impressive collections, imaginative architecture, and creative programs that do not get the attention they deserve. Illustrations of facilities and objects in the collections enable the art lover to plan more efficient trips and discover hidden treasures in an off-the-beaten-path venue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for art museum visits to other US cities
Do you wish you had an easier way to decide which city's art museums to visit?Russell & Spencer make it easy to decide on both the city and its art museums. The beginning of each state's chapter presents a map of the state with numbers attached to each city. The numbers represent how many art museums are in that city. This allows you do decide which city to visit, depending on how many days you can devote to the city. Each museum writeup gives you just enough info to get a feeling for what makes the museum special. As a bonus, attendance figures are given, which gives you an idea of the relative importance of each museum. This helps with time budgeting. I would not visit another city without Art Across America.
