Of the numerous achievements that distinguish Richard Wright's place in the history of American literature, perhaps none is more important than the fact that he was the first African-American writer to sustain himself professionally from his writings alone. Primarily through the success of Native Sonand Black Boy, Wright was able to support, for two decades, a comfortable life for himself and his family in Paris. He also became, with the publication of Native Sonalone, the first internationally celebrated Black American author. If one had to identify the single most influential shaping force in modern Black literary history, one would probably have to point to Wright and the publication of Native Son,his first and most successful novel.

Wright and Fallingwater
Frank Lloyd Wright advised in his autobiography that "no home should ever be on a hill"; instead, it should be "of the hill, belonging to it." Just as gestalt theory described the holistic connectionsbetween figures and backgrounds, Wright emphasized the interdependence ofan architectural structures and their surroundings. It is said that healways decided the site before considering a building's style, its spatialorientation, or the materials with which to build it. Of all his projects,there may be no better example of that than Fallingwater (c. 1938), a smallbut elaborate home in the woods (commissioned by a wealthy Pittsburghdepartment store owner named Edgar J. Kaufmann) in which the building isembedded in the landscape, making it inseparable from the waterfall, woods,and cantilevered rock ledges of its location. While much has been writtenabout Fallingwater as a completed structure, less has been said about itspreparatory drawings, the friendship between merchant prince and masterbuilder, and the dozen projects that Wright and the Kaufmanns intended tobuild (few of which were ever realized) from 1934 until the architect'sdeath in 1959. We daily are more aware, especially in the industrialized world, that land, sea, and air pollution caused by human ignorance and irresponsibility is endangering Planet Earth. Ecology has been defined as "the study of the balance of living things in nature," but in recent decades peopte-^have expanded it also to encompass "the destruction man has brought upon nature."

When Francis Schaeffer added that latter definition and commented on it in his book, Pollution and the Death of Man: The Christian View of Ecology, he was in a distinct minority among evangelical Christians in his sensitivity to environmental issues. Air pollution, toxic waste, tropical deforestation, depletion of the ozone layer, and the spate of local disputes over landfills have done much in the intervening two decades to focus our attention on the ecological crisis. More and more individuals now are aware that real, often critical, environmental problems exist, requiring serious, thoughtful responses. Both the problems and the concern they arouse have reached the stage in which something must and will be done in this, the last decade of the twentieth century

If we believe that God is the Creator and that He has created everything for a purpose, then that in itself has enormous significance and implications for the environmental issue. It is for the Christian an act of faith and an act of stewardship, as well as an a& of enlightened self-interest, to seek the perpetuation and viability of all the created order until we can discern and discover what purpose God has for every living creature and plant.

A classic example is Madagascar's rosy periwinkle, which has been proven to h v e significant cancer-fighting properties. This benefit would have been lost to humankind if the plant had been eradicated before its anti-cancer potential had been discovered. I am more firmly convinced than ever that we face an ecological crisis and that God holds us accountable for our stewardship of the creation and of its resources He has entrusted to our care.

That, of course, includes our children. I believe we have a responsibility to inform our young people of the problems and of the biblical principles that should inform our response. In doing so, we can further perform our duties as Christians and parents by inoculating our young people against the false, anti-biblical teaching which so heavily suffuses so much of the modem, secular environmentalist movement.

If we don't tell our young people and tell Christians what we believe and why we believe it on this issue, who will? If we do not practice what we preach, many of our young people, who are deeply concerned about this issue, will be carried to places that we would rather they not go and will draw conclusions that we would rather they not draw by exposhe to false philosophies. These philosophies, for fallacious and anti-biblical reasons, at least demonstrate concern about the creation.

We must help our young people and others by moving from ascertaining orthodoxy to advocating orthopraxy. We must move from principle to practice and from advice to application. For those outside, the Christian faith who have been environmentally involved, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that we repent of past insensitivity and neglect. The bad news is ' that

"There is ... a distinctively Christian response to ecological concerns. .- The Christian doctrine of creation approaches the study from a different perspective, reaches conclusions from different assumptions, proposes solutions from those different assumptions and works at ecology for different reasons." We sometimes will agree with the secular environmentalists. We will disagree, however, because we have a different approach and a different attitude. Consequently, these will require different actions. I pray that we will "be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason" both as to why, we do what we do and "for the hope" that we have by the providence and grace of God (1 Pet. 3: 15, NIV).

Ecotheologists only
Combining the traditionally conservative issue of religion with the traditionally liberal issue of protecting the environment is a difficult task.Land does it well in this book and provides an introduction forthose interested in protecting the environment from a Christian standpoint. However, this book is not for those who are not already interested inecotheology.The information and insight is helpful and thought provoking,but it is not entertaining.Some background in environmental issues isalso a prerequiste.If you enjoyed Richard Austin's series on ecotheology,this text is a good follow up. ... Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is acknowledged as America's greatest architect. By the first decade of the twentieth century he had reexamined all aspects of architecture, pioneering advanced applications of materials, transforming interior space into continuous interwoven areas, and redefining architectural programs for the new democratic society he envisioned. Over the next five decades, while fulfilling specific commissions, he continued to conceive of individual buildings as solutions to general problems. Still important for students
Richard Levin was one of my professors at Stony Brook. He's of the Chicago school of critics and takes the position that literary criticism is the realm of strongly verifiable theories: if there is no way to disprove a statement, you can't prove it either, and therefore it's meaningless. That pretty well restricts meaningful statements about plays to the realm of plot structure, in which he excels. Leroy Searle has argued, on the other hand, that most literary criticism is in the realm of weakly verifiable theory: while you can't disprove the statement, you can cast doubt upon it.

That issue aside, in "New Readings" Levin justly and expertly takes to task many streams of literary criticism that were current at the time of writing. These streams are represented in Shakepeare criticism, which brings Levin face to face with some of the best known and most popular scholars. Not that he wishes to attack individuals; his interest is indeed in the assumptions and methods of critical schools. But when you tackle the "Shakespeare as Christian apologist" school, you have to grab and bring down Roy Battenhouse. Etc. Since criticism once published is eternal in student papers, theses, dissertations, and later articles, "New Readings" is less dated than one might imagine.

A final note. Soon after the book's publication, Levin engaged the feminist critics in debate in the Letters section of PMLA. Same approach. Worth a look.
