Product Description
Lytton Strachey's classic work "Eminent Victorians" was an assault on the Victorian age and its values. In choosing four key figures, Cardinal Manning, Dr Arnold of Rugby, Florence Nightingale and General Gordon, Strachey conducted a masterly hatchet job on four key representatives of their age. His book was an instant bestseller and has been in print ever since. But now the mood has changed. Victorian studies are booming. Scholars are looking again at the Victorian age and are reassessing some of its more notable figures. The text of "Eminent Victorians" is printed here in its integrity with new critical afterwords by scholars, demonstrating how lopsided was Strachey's judgement and representing his subjects in fresh light. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stories - Masterfully Told.
This book is a joy to read, so eloquently is it written.
Strachey really makes you feel like you're living in another time and place.
These are great stories, masterfully told.
I'm not qualified to comment on the books accuracy.

The chapter on Cardinal Manning also includes a wealth of information about Cardinal John Henry Newman, who was recently beatified. (September 2010)

Product Description
This is a new six-volume set of writings by Nightingale and her contemporaries on nursing and health care in nineteenth-century England. Topics include hospital nursing, district nursing and education, all of which underwent a transformation from the mid-nineteenth century onwards as nursing became professionalized and began to enjoy increased prestige, thanks in large part to the reforming efforts of Florence Nightingale.

Nightingale's thoughts are supplemented by those of Elizabeth Garrett on hospital nursing, J. Clarke Jervoise on infection, Arthur Cotton on conditions in India, and Mrs Dacre Craven and William Rathbone on district nursing. Historically, Nightingale is an important figure in nursing and sanitary reform; she published copiously in these areas, using her own experiences in England and the Crimea as a basis for her critique of medicine and medical care and for her recommendations for improvement; she promoted the professionalization of nursing; she sought to improve the conditions of hospitals by actively promoting principles of sanitation; and she was elevated to the status of national heroine during the Crimean War.

Nightingale was prominent as a critic, commentator and reformer of hospitals and nursing. Her writings address the relevant issues confronted by individuals who sought to elevate nursing to a respected profession, and they offer insight into what was perceived to be a woman's special role in the healing art, the often fraught nature of the nurse's relationship to medicine, and the sanitary conditions in hospitals and homes where people lived, died and nursed the ill. This major set is edited and introduced by Dr Lori Williamson, and will be of interest for academics in the history of medicine, nursing, sanitation, social welfare, and gender studies. ... It was shortly after the Harvard Medical School of China in Shanghai opened its doors in 1911 that my mother, Nicia Brooks, passed through them for the first interview with Dr. Carl Arthur Hedblom, noted thoracic surgeon, for whom throughout her days at the hospital she would work as a surgical nurse, and whom she idolized. It was the interview that was to change the course of her life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A dream come true
What an eventful life young Nicia led in Odessa at the turn of the last century. From poverty to riches and back to straightened circumstances, she continued to yearn for an education and she longed to be a nurse. A TRAINED nurse, Florence Nightingale's work in the Crimea put those words together and little Nicia treasured the concept. Hiding to escape the Cossaks riding through the city with swords drawn, riding the Trans-Siberian Railway, adjusting to life in China, and finally applying to become a nursing student at the Harvard Hospital in Shanghai despite only four years of education - we follow this plucky girl as she faces danger and adapts to enormous change.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Delight!
This was a fascinating and entertaining visit to a world gone by. Based on the author's mother's life, which began in Czar Alexander's Russia, we follow a Anicia on her quest to find her place in the world. Orphaned as a young girl, she is bounced around to various homes of relatives, always trying to earn her keep by working hard and helping out where she can. Through a series of twists and turns in life's road, she travels to China, where she find's her heart's desire as a nurse in training.
I had a hard time putting the book down, as I was eager to follow Anicia's story.
Written by award-winning author, Barbara Brooks Wallace, this biographical account of her mother's life is a terrific addition to your home or school library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Story!
Anastasia, Florence Nightingale and I: A Nurse's Story is the fascinating story of the author's mother who was born in Russia, became a nurse who served in the first world war, fell in love and moved to China where her daughter was born. Little wonder that Barbara Brooks Wallace grew up to be a writer. What tales she must still have to write. This book has all the ingredients to enthrall young readers as well as adult readers.

Barbara Brooks Wallace should be a national treasure. She consistently writes books that are literary jewels and should be classics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A FASCINATING STORY!
What a wonderful book!I have always been interested in that period of history, and Barbara Wallace has done a superb job of telling the story of lovely young Nicia, who comes to China from Czarist Russia and fulfills her dream of becoming a nurse. Not only did I enjoy the telling, but I also learned a great deal from the book.I had no idea there was a Harvard Medical School in China at that time. Or that women could train as nurses in a country still so imprisoned in its past.

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable story
I'd be surprised if the story of the young woman in this book doesn't make a lot of other young girls and women seriously consider a career in nursing.Really inspiring! ... Read more

Product Description

Florence Nightingale: An Introduction to Her Life and Family introduces the Collected Works by giving an overview of Nightingale’s life and the faith that guided it and by outlining the main social reform concerns on which she worked from her “call to service’’ at age sixteen to old age. This volume reports correspondence (selected from the thousands of surviving letters) with her mother, father and sister and a wide extended family. There is material on Nightingale’s “domestic arrangements,’’ from recipes, cat care and relations with servants to her contributions to charities, church and social reform causes. Much new and original material comes to light, and a remarkably different portrait of Nightingale, one with a more nuanced view of her family relationships, emerges.

Currently, Volumes 1 to 11 are available in e-book version by subscription or from university and college libraries through the following vendors: Canadian Electronic Library, Ebrary, MyiLibrary, and Netlibrary.

The Series

In the Collected Works of Florence Nightingale all the surviving writing of Florence Nightingale will be published, much of it for the first time. Known as the heroine of the Crimean War and the major founder of the modern profession of nursing, Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) will be revealed also as a scholar, theorist and social reformer of enormous scope and importance.

Original material has been obtained from over 150 archives and private collections worldwide. This abundance of material will be reflected in the series, revealing a significant amount of new material on her philosophy, theology and personal spiritual journey, as well as on her vision of a public health care system, her activism to achieve the difficult early steps of nursing for the sick poor in workhouse infirmaries and her views on health promotion and women’s control over midwifery. Nightingale’s more than forty years of work for public health in India, particularly in famine prevention and for broader social reform, will be reported in detail.

The Collected Works of Florence Nightingale demonstrates Nightingale’s astute use of the political process and reports on her extensive correspondence with royalty, viceroys, cabinet ministers and international leaders, including such notables as Queen Victoria and W. E. Gladstone. Much new material on Nightingale’s family is reported, including some that will challenge her standard portrayal in the secondary literature. Sixteen printed volumes are scheduled and will record her enormous and largely unpublished correspondence, previously published books, articles and pamphlets, many of which have long been out of print.

There will be full publication in electronic form, permitting readers to easily pursue their particular interests. Extensive databases, notably a chronology and a names index, will also be published in electronic form, again permitting convenient access to persons interested not only in Nightingale but in other figures of the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Volume 7 of "The Collected Works of Florence Nightingale"
Volume 7 of "The Collected Works of Florence Nightingale" series, Florence Nightingale's European Travels is a compilation of the famous nurse's correspondence and a few short published articles from the European travels of her youth. From visiting nations as a teenager with her family, to observing political changes in Italy and France, to her first nursing experience, her travels set the stage for her often brilliant letters that fully reveal her courage, faith, professionalism and ideals. Many of the writings in this outstanding series have never before been published; now, for the first time they are available to any and all interested in researching the perspective, experiences, and character of a legend. Highly recommended for libraries and reference or biography shelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb primary source of wisdom and insight
Florence Nightingale On Public Health Care is the sixth volume in the Wilfrid Laurier University Press "Collected Works Of Florence Nightingale" series, which gathers all available and surviving writing by Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), the famous heroine of the Crimean War and major founder of the nursing profession. Some of Nightingale's writings see print for the first time in these robust compendiums. Public Health Care includes Nightingale's "Notes on Nursing for the Labouring Classes"; papers on mortality in schools and hospitals; considerations on rural health; and Nightingale's experience bringing nursing into hellish workhouse infirmaries. A superb primary source of wisdom and insight that transcends centuries, very highly recommended for medical science history and reference shelves, and a seminal foundational study offering revelations of practical problems and ethical dilemmas that holds value for all students, scholars, scientists, and practitioners of modern medicine, Florence Nightingale On Public Health Care is an impressive addition to any academic or professional History of Medicine reference collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Historians
This is a great historical study, with the majority of the text dedicated to reprinting mass amounts of letters between Florence and her family and friends. Most of the letters are written by her, but there are others from her family and friends to her or about her. A great resource for those who wish to get to know what Florence Nightingale was really like in her daily life. This is also a great resource in that the editor outlines a basic biography of Florence's life, and offers footnotes throughout the book to inform the reader of who the people that Florence writes about were and their significance. ... Product Description
It's been said that the three people who did most to alleviate human suffering in the 19th century were the inventors of antiseptics and chloroform--and Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

Nightingale lived to be over 90 yet spent less than two years in the military hospitals at Scutari, where the legend was created. The "ministering angel" was in reality a tough domineering and brilliant administrator, scholar and writer of government reports.

Elspeth Huxley concentrates on the contradictory personality of this woman, by turns a bullying martinet, a loyal and emotional friend, a compassionate nurse, a witty companion, a writer of sermons and masterly manipulator of men, who at 17 turned her back on London society when she heard a call from God to service. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Woman
Before listening to this book on tape, all I knew about Florence Nightingale was that she was a nurse and went around on a battlefield (I mistakenly thought it was on the American Civil War battlefield!) helping wounded men.Now I know that she was so much more!Florence was an incredibly important influence on the health industry which had been sadly neglected in England and wherever British soldiers were stationed.Nurses were considered of poor moral character, and were rather useless, especially since doctors rarely allowed them to participate in the care of patients.Florence, with her inner call to the work and her determination, pushed for patient care reform, nurse training, sanitation improvements and so much more at home and abroad. Her fame began as her influence was felt in the Crimean battlefield, but her work continued in Britain, India, and rippled throughout the world's health industry. She was a proponent of women's equality and suffrage, and reformed her religious ideas to exclude a specific religion, but embraced a universal God.Her work carried on to her death at a late age.

Though read in a crisp, stiff English voice which sometimes is tiresome for my American ear to listen to, it's appropriate considering that Florence was English. For anyone curious about the real Florence Nightingale, here is where you can learn all about her amazing life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Florence Nightingale
I began to read this book because I thought the cover of the book was interesting. A picture of a kind-faced woman in a hospital by an ill man.
This book started on a young wealthy girl, named Florence. Her sister, Parthe, would always have parties and meet new people. Both of them would never have to attend school or even read any study material. However, Florence was different. She enjoyed reading and studying. She hated dolls, parties, and when guests came to visit her family, she would never greet them or even try to get to know them. She would just lock herself up in her own room. Sometimes, she even felt like as if she was a monster, for she was the only girl around who hated parties and whatever the other girls loved to do. No one, except for boys would have interest in study. As soon as Florence grew older, she tried to attend Medical School. Her parents were worried, for the tradition in her family was never to study, and when you grow older, you marry a rich and wealthy man and give birth to family. But Florence had no interest in it. The more she read about Medical, the more she determined to help the poor, and sick. When she was young, she pretended to heal ill people with her dolls. So now and then, she would visit the poor and ill and clean their huts, feed them, and accompany them. Rumors started about her, like, why would a wealthy girl like her, help filthy people? But she ignored all of them. Her dream was to help people, and she did. After secretly sneaking out of the house, she trained herself as a nurse. As soon as she was professional enough, she opened her own hospital, called the Nightingale Hospital. During World War II, many of their soldiers were injured, and Florence and her nurses were there at their needs twenty-four/seven. They called her the "Lady-with-the-Lamp." It became so famous that Florence was getting popular. Later in her life, she meets a gentlemen. They fall in love, however, Florence could not marry him, for she believed that if she did, her dream of taking care of injured people would be ruined, and she thought that it was more important. The Nightingales, soon accepted Florence to own a hospital and help people when she was successful. Although Florence is different, she is different in a unique and special way.
This book inspired me to be someone like Florence Nightingale after reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Story For All Ages
