Product Description
Jerzy Neyman received the National Medal of Science "forlaying the foundations of modern statistics and devising tests andprocedures that have become essential parts of the knowledge of everystatistician." Until his death in 1981 at the age of eighty-seven, hewas vigorously involved in the concerns and controversies of the day,a teaching professor at the University of California, and thedirectory of the Berkeley Statistical Laboratory. Neyman was ascientist whose personality and activity were integral parts of hiscontribution to his science. His career is thus particularywell-suited for the nontechnical scientific life-story which ConstanceReid has made her own in such well-received biographies of scientistsHilbert and Courant in Goettingen and New York. She was able to talkextensively with Neyman and to have access to his personal andprofessional letters and papers. Her book will appeal to theprofessional statistician as well as to the layman who wo!uld liketo learn something of a subject which permeates almost every aspect ofmodern life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great carefully done biography
Constance Reid is a biographer who has specialized writing about the lives of mathematicians, statisticians and scientists.Besides Neyman's book she wrote one about Courant.

Neyman had a very interesting life, from his early years in Europe where he grew up and did his fundamental work on mathematical statistics particularly the Neyman-Pearson theory fo hypothesis testing.Neyman met controversy head on as he like Karl Pearson before him had lively debates with Fisher as to what constitutes a test of significance.Neyman's approach was what is now called the frequentist approach which draws inference on the basis of what would happen by repeated sampling from an underlying probability distribution (the sampling distribution).Fisher on the other hand thought that what happens in other possible samples is irrelevant and that inference should be based solely on the data at hand. This led to what he called fiducial theory.Although during Fisher's lifetime the debate on this raged, the fiducial theory has largely been discredited.Differences in inference between the two approaches often did not occur and it wasn't until Neyman discovered the difference in results when nuisance parameters were involved, starting with the famous Behrens-Fisher problem of estimating the difference between the means of two normal distributions when the variances are unknown but must be assumed to be unequal.

Besides his fundamental contributions, Neyman immigrated to the United States and founded the Statistics Department at the University of California. He turned Berkeley into a hotbed for statistics and created one of the top statistics departments in the world, rivaled by its neighbor across the San Francsico Bay Leland Stnaford Junior University. In his 80s Neyman was as vibrant and productive as ever and was able to fubction this way due to the nursing help of his colleague and Berkeley Professor Elizabeth Scott.Reid emphasizes the last three years of Neyman's life when she interviewed him and followed him around.

I was a graduate student a Stanford during the period from 1974-1978.Each year Stanford and Berkeley would hold joint symposia that were commonly attended by the fraduate students and faculty from both schools,When the lectures were in Berkeley they were always followed by a dinner for the speaker at a nice Berkeley restaurant. It was on these occasions that I became acquainted with Neyman, Scott, Freedman, Bickel, LeCam, Blackwell and Lehmann. These were some of the top names in statistics at the time. Over at Stanford we had our own set of famous names with Efron, Miller, Moses, Diaconis, Olkin, Siegmund and Stein.

The strong academic and social nature of Jerzy Neyman and the Berkeley group that I personally expereinced is very well portrayed by Constance Reid in this fine biography.Technical details about statistical matters are kept out of the book.So this book can be enjoyed by people without much mathematical or statistical knowledge. ... Product Description
From the Preface:

This book represents the implementation of a decision adopted by the Council of the National Academy of Sciences relating to the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Nicholas Copernicus. From the outset it was intended that this Copernican volume would describe a number of Copernican-type intellectual revolutions that have taken place in recent centuries. Such revolutions are characterized by the abandonment of widely held concepts and replacement by dramatically new conceptualizations that resulted in deepened understanding of natural processes.

It was the original intention of the Academy's Council that the essays would be addressed to the general educated public, including teaching staffs of colleges and high schools and college students. The combination of the intended broad coverage and the contemplated readership presented considerable difficulties and affected the choice of incidents in the history of modern science which could be discussed. As it has turned out, the material presented is quite rich and, while there is an unavoidable variation in the amount of specialized knowledge expected from the reader, we hope that the summaries preceding particular chapters are sufficient to create a broad perspective and make the whole understandable. To the extent that our goals have been approached, the help of numerous scientists is gratefully acknowledged.

The introductory chapter describes the circumstances and the essence of the initial intellectual revolution due to Copernicus himself. The subsequent six parts present in turn: (1) several revolutions in astronomy-cosmology, all in the twentieth century and one of them still in progress; (2) a number of deep revolutionary changes in the biological sciences, one of them made twenty years ago by an inspired contribution of a graduate student; (3) several revolutionary changes in the physical sciences; (4) revolutions in the thinking of mathematicians; (5) the emergence of a "pluralistic" point of view in scientific research; and (6) revolutions in technology.

The epoch when it was possible for individuals to acquire a reasonably detailed view of practically all of science is now far behind us. It was followed by a prolonged period of compartmentalization of research, with specialists in one domain becoming increasingly ignorant of developments in another. In the present epoch the pendulum appears to be moving in the opposite direction. The many problems faced by modern society depend for their solution on interdisciplinary studies and on participation of individuals with wide horizons. It is hoped that the publication of the present volume will serve not only to commemorate the achievements of Nicholas Copernicus but also to stimulate and accelerate this trend. ... Read more

He received international acclaim for his performances of the music of a variety of composers. He is widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century. Early life Rubinstein grew-up on the famous Piotrkowska street, ód Rubinstein was born in ód , Poland on January 28, 1887, to a Jewish family. He was the youngest of 8 children. At the age of two, he demonstrated perfect pitch and a fascination with the piano , watching his elder sister's piano lessons. By the age of four, he was already recognised as a child prodigy . The great Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim , on hearing the four-year-old child play, was greatly impressed and began to mentor the young prodigy. Rubinstein first studied piano in Warsaw . By the age of ten, Rubinstein moved to Berlin to continue his studies. In 1900 at age 13, he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic , followed by appearances in Germany and Poland and further study with Karl Heinrich Barth (an associate of Franz Liszt , Hans von Bülow , Joseph Joachim and Johannes Brahms ; Barth also taught Wilhelm Kempff ). Career In 1904, Rubinstein moved to Paris to launch his career in earnest. There he met the composers Maurice Ravel and Paul Dukas and the violinist Jacques Thibaud . He also played Camille Saint-Saëns ' Piano Concerto No. 2 in the presence of the composer. Through the family of Juliusz Wertheim (to whose understanding of Chopin's genius Rubinstein attributed his own inspiration in the works of that composer) he formed friendships with the violinist Paul Kochanski and composer Karol... ... In the 1990s she started (together with her team) so called grade data analysis, a science of applying copula and rank methods to problems of correspondence and cluster analysis together with outlier detection. (The adjective grade here honors statisticians of the first half of the 20th century, who called cumulative distribution functions in this way.) In 1993 the President of the Republic of Poland awarded Elbieta Pleszczyska with the Full Professor title in the area of mathematics. In 2000 she was an invited consultant of the Cambridge University. In the Institute of Computer Science PAS, she had been leader of the Statistical Data Analysis division for many years.
