Product Description
The impression is quite common that satisfactory views of the heavenly bodies can be obtained only with very large telescopes, and that the owner of a small one must stand at a great disadvantage alongside of the fortunate possessor of a great one. This is not true to the extent commonly supposed. Sir William Herschel would have been delighted to view the moon through what we should now consider a very modest instrument; and there are some objects, especially the moon, which commonly present a more pleasing aspect through a small telescope than through a large one. ... IT is strongly recommended to the reader to study the constellations for himself. If he desires to feel all the sublimity associated with them, he must not be satisfied with the hurried glance or occasional survey to which one commonly confines himself in his evening walk. What he should do is, on a clear and moonless summer evening, to escape from his usual surroundings, and go to a place, whether field or housetop, where there is nothing to obstruct his vision, or disturb the current of his thoughts. There he must recline on his back, so as to take in as much as possible of the starry vault at one view. One doing this for the first time will be surprised at the magnificence of the spectacle. As he looks upon the " universal frame " and reflects that it has stood as he now sees it through ages compared with which the whole period of human history is but a fleetingmoment, the mind will be filled with a consciousness of infinity and eternity which never before entered it. Other sights become stale from custom, but this can never lose its relish. It can be enjoyed without knowing the name of a constellation, but is more impressive when one reflects that the eyes of man have gazed upon and studied it ever since our race appeared on earth. In ancient times the practice was adopted of imagining the figures of heroes and animals to be so outlined in the heavens as to include in each figure a large group of the brighter stars. In a few cases some vague resemblance may be traced between the configurations of the stars and the features of the ob... ... Read more

Product Description
Simon Newcomb (1835-1903) was an astronomer and mathematician remembered for his work in recalculating the major astronomical constants to a new international standard. He was a founding member of the American Astronomical Society and became its first president in 1899. Although Newcomb's mathematical work is well known, this autobiography, first published in 1903, focuses on his achievements and work as an astronomer. In it he provides an account of his scientific research with comments on his approach, which together with his descriptions of scientific discoveries and collaborations occurring in Washington DCshow the variety of scientific research being conducted in the United States in the late nineteenth century. His detailed descriptions of how telescopes were used, together with accounts of his experience of working conditions in various observatories, provide valuable insights into astronomical research methods in the late nineteenth century. ... High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Simon Newcomb (March 12, 1835 - July 11, 1909) was a Canadian-American astronomer and mathematician. Though he had little conventional schooling, he made important contributions to timekeeping as well as writing on economics and statistics and authoring a science fiction novel. Simon Newcomb was born in the town of Wallace, Nova Scotia. His parents were Emily Prince, the daughter of a New Brunswick magistrate, and itinerant school teacher John Burton Newcomb. John moved around teaching in different parts of Canada, particularly in different villages in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Newcomb seems to have had little conventional schooling other than from his father and from a short apprenticeship to Dr. Foshay, a charlatan herbalist, in New Brunswick in 1851. ... Read more

Excerpt: Sir Charles Tupper, 1st Baronet, GCMG, CB, PC (July 2, 1821 October 30, 1915) was a Canadian father of Confederation: as the Premier of Nova Scotia from 1864 to 1867, he led Nova Scotia into Confederation. He later went on to serve as the sixth Prime Minister of Canada, sworn in to office on May 1, 1896, seven days after parliament had been dissolved. He would go on to lose the June 23 election, resigning on July 8, 1896. His 68-day term as prime mininster is currently the shortest in Canadian history. Born in Amherst, Nova Scotia in 1821, Tupper was trained as a physician and practiced medicine periodically throughout his political career (and served as the first president of the Canadian Medical Association). He entered Nova Scotian politics in 1855 as a protege of James William Johnston. During Johnston's tenure as premier of Nova Scotia in 1857-59 and 186364, Tupper served as provincial secretary. Tupper replaced Johnston as premier in 1864. As premier, Tupper established public education in Nova Scotia.
