Der 1. September 1939 war der Tag, an dem der Zweite Weltkrieg ausbrach. Die Mutter des Autors stieß damals die Worte aus, die den Titel des Buches bilden. Der Autor hat versucht, den 1. September 1939 in einen geschichtlichen Zusammenhang zu stellen und hat hierbei die Reichsgründung von 1871 mit einbezogen.Ein immer wieder aufgegriffenes Thema des Autors ist die Judenverfolgung. Es ging dem Verfasser darum, diesen »Vernichtungskrieg« Hitlers, der ihm wichtiger war als militärische Erfolge, als das größte Verbrechen der Menschheitsgeschichte darzustellen. Die Bedeutung des Versuches einer Wiedergutmachung für die Opfer des Holocaust erkannte ein Mann, der dreizehn Jahre vor Hitler geboren worden war und als »Nichtnazi« (so Sebastian Haffner) überlebte, Konrad Adenauer. Adenauer erkannte, dass nur der bekundete Wille zur Versöhnung mit den Juden das deutsche Volk wieder in den Kreis der freien Völker zurückführen kann. Hier waren es zwei Männer, die diesen Prozess vorantrieben, Konrad Adenauer und Nahum Goldmann.Eines ist, so glaubt der Autor, sicherlich richtig: Adenauer war der richtige Mann, der zur rechten Zeit das Richtige tat.
