Plautus was the single greatest influence on Westerncomedy. In fact, Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors andMoliere's the Miser are two subsequent classics directlybased on Plautine originals.Plautus himself borrowedfrom the Greeks, but his jokes, rapid dialogue, bawdyhumor, and irreverent characterizations are the originalwork of an undisputed genius. The comedies printed hereshow him at his best, and Professor Segal's translationskeep their fast, rollicking pace intact, making thesethe most readable and actable versions available. This book makes for a good read, though it is not all that funny in today's context.I would recommend this book if you are interested in gaining a deeper understanding the minds of ancient peoples.

3-0 out of 5 stars Four Comedies...
a worthwhile read for anyone.but look into it if your taking a college course on roman comedy especially though.it's not a quick read but a good one.the "brothers Menaechmus" stays the truest to roman comedy forn with the five staple characters all in there.not for those wihtshort attention spans. ... Excerpt: Menaechmus (Greek: , 380320 BC) was an ancient Greek mathematician and geometer born in Alopeconnesus (within modern-day Turkey), who was known for his friendship with the renowned philosopher Plato and for his apparent discovery of conic sections and his solution to the then-long-standing problem of doubling the cube using the parabola and hyperbola. Menaechmus is remembered by mathematicians for his discovery of the conic sections and his solution to the problem of doubling the cube. Menaechmus likely discovered the conic sections, that is, the ellipse, the parabola, and the hyperbola, as a by-product of his search for the solution to the Delian problem. Menaechmus knew that in a parabola y² = lx, where l is a constant called the latus rectum, although he was not aware of the fact that any equation in two unknowns determines a curve. He apparently derived these properties of conic sections and others as well. Using this information it was now possible to find a solution to the problem of the duplication of the cube by solving for the points at which two parabolas intersect, a solution equivalent to solving a cubic equation. There are few direct sources for Menaechmus' work; his work on conic sections is known primarily from an epigram by Eratosthenes, and the accomplishment of his brother (of devising a method to create a square equal in area to a given circle using the quadratrix), Dinostratus, is known solely from the writings of Proclus. Proclus also mentions that Menaechmus was taught by Eudoxus. There is a curious statement by Plutarch to the effect that Plato disapproved of Menaechmus achieving his doubled cube solution with the use of mechanical devices; the proof currently known a...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1944319 ... Excerpt: Timon of Phlius (Greek: ; c. 320-c. 230 BC) was a Greek skeptic philosopher, a pupil of Pyrrho, and a celebrated writer of satirical poems called Silloi (Greek: ). He was born in Phlius, moved to Megara, and then he returned home and married. He next went to Elis with his wife, and heard Pyrrho, whose tenets he adopted. He also lived on the Hellespont, and taught at Chalcedon, before moving to Athens, where he lived until his death. His writings were said to have been very numerous. He composed poetry, tragedies, satiric dramas, and comedies, of which very little remains. His most famous composition was his Silloi, a satirical account of famous philosophers, living and dead, in hexameter verse. The Silloi has not survived intact, but it is mentioned and quoted by several ancient authors. A fairly full account of Timon's life was given by Diogenes Laërtius, from the first book of a work on the Silloi by Apollonides of Nicaea; and some particulars are quoted by Diogenes from Antigonus of Carystus, and from Sotion. He was a native of Phlius, and was the son of Timarchus. Being left an orphan while still young, he was at first a dancer in the theatre, but he abandoned this profession for the study of philosophy, and, having moved to Megara, he spent some time with Stilpo, and then he returned home and married. He next went to Elis with his wife, and heard Pyrrho, whose tenets he adopted, so far at least as his restless genius and satirical scepticism permitted him to follow any master. During his residence at Elis, he had children born to him, the eldest of whom, named Xanthus, he i...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1219302 ... Read more

Chapters: Pytheas, Darius Iii of Persia, Aristander, Menaechmus, Memnon of Rhodes, Theodectes, Demades, Lanike. Excerpt:Aristander of Telmessos (Greek : ; born ca. 380 BC, fl. 2nd half of 4th century BCE), a Greek from Caria , was Alexander the Great 's favorite seer . Aristander was already in Philip's entourage in 357/6, when he correctly interpreted a dream as revealing Olympias' pregnancy. The ancient sources place him interpreting omens from the conqueror's birth to his death. Although details are variously given, and some incidents are fictitious, Aristander was clearly an influential presence during Alexander's campaigns, and played an important role in uplifting the morale of the Macedonian army. There are indications he wrote divinatory works, either before, during or after the expedition, although it is also possible these works were spuriously attributed. Aristander in the sources (A represents Arrian , P Plutarch , C Curtius , D Diodorus , J Justin , S Strabo , Iter. the Itinerarium Alexandri . Passages in which Aristander is mentioned by name are marked with an asterisk.) item Philip dreams he sealed up the womb of his wife Olympias , and that the seal bore a lion device.
