5-0 out of 5 stars A Highly Detailed History From the Chairman Himself!
Loaded with details, "Con-glom-er-ate" is a must read for not only lovers of the Illinois Central Railroad, but for those individuals who want to know what it was like when conglomerates reigned supreme in thebusiness world. This book covers the 21 year term of William B. Johnson asChairman and Chief Executive, first of the ICRR, then of ICIndustries.

We learn of Mr. Johnson's roots as a lawyer, then of his daysat the Railway Express Agency (REA), then culminating in his call to runthe Illinois Central Railroad. From his early days at the IC, Johnson had avision for the first land grant railroad (1851) in the country. Knowing thetide was shifting away from railroads as a profit center, Johnson takes anewly formed company called Illinois Central Industries, to places only heimagined. Making acquisitions and divestments, Johnson creates a $5 billiondollar company from what was a modest $300 million railroad. By the timeJohnson retires, IC Industries is a complex company consisting of food andconsumer products (Pet Foods, Pepsi Cola Bottling), automobile services(Midas), real estate (Illinois Center), manufacturing (Abex) andtransportation (ICRR).

We are offered behind the scenes insight intonegotiations, planning, Presidential meetings, and much more. No stone hasbeen left unturned in this in depth primer of the modern conglomerate. Thereader is carefully guided along from year to year, just as Johnsoncarefully guided IC Industries through the years.

Loaded with facts andcontributions from many of Johnson's faithful Executive's, this book is amust read. I'm proud to say my father worked side by side with Mr. Johnsonthe entire 21 years, and then finally retired after 40 years of servicewith the ICRR and IC Industries. Even so, my knowledge of IC Industriesincreased as I read this book. The following year, in 1987, Mr. Johnsonsuffered a stroke and retired from the job he loved so much. However, as welearn in "Con-glom-er-ate", this is by no means the end for Mr.Johnson.

Wonderully written by Frank J. Allston, this book will amazeyou with the knowlege, skill and daring of a man called William B. Johnson. ... Read more

Product Description
Editing Shakespeare's plays became a particularlyfashionable activity in the 18th century, and Samuel Johnson isperhaps the most famous Shakespearean editor of that period.Originally proposed in 1745, Johnson's edition of Shakespeare's Playswas abandoned, and only resurfaced after the completion of hismonumental Dictionary.Unlike many previous editors, Johnson wasgenerous in his acknowledgements of collaborators and previousscholarship. In contrast to Pope, he not only expressed approval ordisapproval in his notes but also went into detail about his reasons. However, the textual editing of his first edition was considereddisappointing.George Stevens, who had a tremendous knowledge ofearly dramatic literature, successfully recitified this and producedwith Johnson a new 10-volume edition in 1773.This edition wasgreatly praised and both editors made further revisions andimprovements for the 1778 edition reprinted here.

Product Description
The complex subject of governance is illuminated and clarified in this completely revised third edition of William C. Johnson’s popular text. Working from the premise that no significant government enterprise takes place within the boundaries of any one organization, the author explores the collaborative process through which public policy is shaped by networks of organizations with diverse missions and certain common purposes. The discussion examines the institutional structures of government and the private sector, as well as the connections between them, the specific operations within these institutions, and the relationships between administrative institutions and the larger society. Throughout the presentation, the author emphasizes the role of public administrators in forming and maintaining the partnerships that advance the goals of government. Each chapter features boxed highlights that illustrate and enliven the principles of public administration. From the No Child Left Behind Act, creation of the Department of Homeland Security, and distribution of the Colorado River’s water, to the smart-growth approach to land-use planning, emergence of e-government, and globalization, Johnson draws widely from current issues and events to underscore his presentation with interesting and relevant examples. ... That he profited by this early training is -evident from the fact that when he was chosen by George III (at Burgoyne's recommendation) to be the leader of the expedition against Fort Stanwix, he justified their confidence in his advance from Oswego by his precautions, as shown by the orders given from day to day in this Orderly Book, by his stratagem at Oris- kany, and by his general conduct of the siege of Fort Stanwix up to the panic produced by the rumor of the approach of Arnold which forced him to raise it. Indeed, as Hon. Ellis H. Roberts says in his admirable address at the Oriskany Centennial, "that he was a wise commander, fitted for border warfare, hisorder of march bespeaks him."After his unfortunate expedition against Fort Stanwix, he was promoted in Nov., 1780, to colonel in the army, the highest rank he ever attained ; and commanding scouts and rangers on the northern frontier, under the immediate command of GeneralHaldimand, then lieutenant governor of Canada, he occasionally carried on a guer... ... Product Description
William Johnson was the first to write a book about Stephen Harper, and he has become the authority on Harper.

Who is this man? Everyone knows that he became leader of the Alliance Party and, against all odds, gathered in the old Conservative Party to create a force designed to win power. Yet what are his core beliefs? Where will he takes us now that he has gained power?

William Johnson has researched the Harper family background and the historical context that shaped Harper’s political career. He paints a fascinating picture of a man who, like Pierre Trudeau, trained mentally for political power like an athlete training for the Olympics, yet is not a natural politician and never really wanted the political leader’s life. By studying Harper’s approach to the main issues in Canadian politics, he shows that Harper is a sophisticated political operative, far more complex and intellectual than the right-wing Republican image that has been created for him.

For the paperback edition, Johnson has updated this serious, objective biography with several new chapters taking us right up through Harper’s early days in power.Amazon.com Review
William Johnson's Stephen Harper and the Future of Canada sets out to dispel the myths and explain the facts about the leader of the official opposition. By his own admission, Harper is not comfortable with the typical role of political leader as baby-kissing, photo-op-seeking figurehead, and Johnson suggests that the reason for his unflattering portrayals in the media is his reluctance to do what's expected of such a figure. "An unusual trait for a politician," Johnson writes, "is his conviction that correct policies are more important than tactics for winning support and achieving power." If nothing else, Johnson maintains, Harper should be admired for standing by his convictions, unaffected by public opinion polls and influence from his own advisers, even when a degree of compromise might have increased his popularity.

The author chronicles with detail Harper's political beginnings, his stint--and his ensuing disenchantment--with the Mulroney Progressive Conservatives, the events that led to him becoming a key architect of the Reform party, and his rescue of the Canadian Alliance, which led to the merger with the Progressive Conservatives to create the new Conservative Party that he led into federal elections against Paul Martin's Liberals in 2004. With a different leader at the top but Harper behind the scenes, Canadians might very well have elected a Conservative government in 2004: one cannot help but feel from Johnson's account that Harper would be better appreciated as a back-room policy director, a role he may not relish, but may be essential if he is to continue in politics. --Eric Wilson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars even an American loves this book
this book was originally assigned to me for a Canadian politics class, but I never got around to reading it until after I graduated. It's a solid book - it really portrays the leadership style of Stephen Harper in the context of an ever-contentious Canadian political history. Johnson does a superb job of displaying Harper as a leader unrivaled in his vision for Canada. For Americans like myself, it's a great book to gain a better grasp on major Canadian political issues such as regionalism, Constitutional politics, and of course, Quebec separatism, among others. Go for it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Future of Canada
Great book.Seemed to be written from an objective view point - and I really appreciate that.I came away from this book with a better understanding of Prime Minister Harper and a better hope for the future of Canada.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Hidden Agenda
This is a well-written book, full of anecdotes and about an interesting subject. Many people claim that Stephen Harper has a "hidden agenda" but when reading about his life, it is easy to see a consistency in vision and a steadfast dedication to making Canada a better place for all Canadians, not just the political elite. Mr. Harper is brilliant and that comes out loud and clear in this unauthorized biography. Mr. Harper also is clearly a man with integrity and honesty. That greatest asset is also his biggest handicap, because Canadians are so used to the "what's in it for me?" style of politics that they have trouble understanding the integrity of Mr. Harper. I hope his critics will take the time to read this excellent book. ... Read more
