5-0 out of 5 stars A Piece of History That Needs To Be Told
I stumbled upon this little gem in a dollar bin. The title caught my eye because I grew up in a steel valley just outside of Pittsburgh in the 80's as many of the mills were closing. I saw first hand the devastation the closing of the steel mills had on the local economy. Those old mills sat empty and abandoned, a skeletal reminder of what they were.Later, after I grew up and moved out of state, they were bulldozed, demolished, gone, replaced with new malls, resturants and modern businesses. There remains no physical evidence of the numerous steel mills that made the steel that helped build our country.

However, the mill across the river from us kept the Coke portion of their mill opened. I remember having a love/hate relationship with the mill because it's lights were so beautiful at night, but it was such a scourge on the landscape in the stark daylight. I remember the smog, and the coal dust, the dust that would make my feet so black after playing barefoot in the yard. I remember how frustrated I was after I received a telescope for Christmas and couldn't see the stars! So when I saw this book, "No Star Nights" with it's smoky illustrations, I had to have it.

As a teacher in West Virginia, I have tried to explain to my rural West Virginia students what it was like for me to grow up in Pittsburgh. This book explains beautifully the words I stumbled over and the images I struggled to share. From an educational standpoint, this ties in well with our unit on West Virginia because we discuss what happens to the coal mined in WV, and the author is from West Virginia and the story takes place in Weirton, WV. We discuss how many people left West Virginia to work in other states, like my own great grandparents, and we tie it in with our West Virginia state songs.

This book is a treasure for me to share with my students and my own children and recalls an important piece of history that has many lessons to teach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Draws you into life in a mid-20th cent. industrial town, wonderful illustrations
This is a story of a girl growing up in the shadow of a great steel mill in West Virginia in the late 40s or 50s.While, I could see this book being nostalgic for those who grew up or heard stories of those growing up in similar situations, I think it's a valuable book for all children. It paints a picture of mid-20th century life in an industrial town.

Children will be intrigued by the thought of "no star nights" where the sky glowed red from the furnaces. And the wind swirling bits of graphite about in the air that stung the girls' bare legs are recess. The brief look into the mill from the bridge that passes though will also fascinate. And they will relate to the little girls pretending the crane was a big beast chasing them as they ran screaming home. The story is snapshot-like in general, with 2-4 pages focusing on one "scene" before moving onto the next. This is a wonderful technique for capturing a way of life.

The illustrations are wonderful.Very realistic in style, but many of them painted with a bit of a hazy overcast, which really captures the feel of "living in a whirling world of smoke."

I would definitely recommend this book as a valuable tool to help a child understand life in an industrial/factory town, and to some extent life in the middle of the 20th century in general.

3-0 out of 5 stars Burlington Public Library Youth Book Discussion Group
Really, we gave this an average of 3 1/2 stars.

We read this book for our book club, and rated it on the following items. What is shown is an average of our votes, 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest:

Illustration quality -- 4.75

Information quality -- 3

Information quantity -- 3.5

Story quality -- 4

Our favorite thing about this book was the illustrations. They captured the mood really well, especially by using a more realistic style of painting. We also really liked how the pictures complemented the text. A couple of things we didn't like: the colors weren't spread evenly throughout, and there could have been more red. We also weren't thrilled with the title, thinking it wasn't the best description of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding evocation of place
I agree with the "Strong regional appeal" reviewer but think the book deserves five stars. After reading books to my daughter for six years, I keep coming back to No Star Nights as the best evocation of a place now forever changed, a way of life virtually erased from the American landscape.Anna Egan Smucker's writing is spare but rich. Every image rings true. The pictures capture the atmosphere of a steel town beautifully but do not make it pretty. This is a powerful, graceful book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Strong regional appeal
The style, from a childs viewpoint, describes the elements of life that would be important or noticed to someone growing up in PA, WV, and OH industrial regions. It brings back many memories as I too grew up in this area. What really makes this book special to me are the illustrations. Not bad for a guy from MN. It seams as though he too was from this region. In closing, I own this book and if I ever lost it I would buy another copy. I like to read it to my kids and share it with my fellow 'Burghers ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all females, young and old a like!
Restoring Broken Vessels is an excellent written and well timed book.I was hooked from the beginning. Although I have never been sexually abused, the content held a lot of information that was helpful in realizing whatoccurs to the female psyche as one develops.I ama christian woman and the author's articulation and unfolding of spiritual attacks, spokedirectly to my spirit and beliefs. I found the book so enlightening, that Ibegan reading it to my 10 year old granddaughter, who inturnbeganreading it herself and in 2 days, had read 3/4/'s of the book. If one is abeliever in the providential plan of God in their life, (of course theBible is the first source), this is a must read book. I am looking forwardto sharing this book as a teaching/learning aid to assist women I encounterwho are hurting, confused, and at the point of giving up on relationships. Thanks Ms. Johnson for sharing your work with us, your readers.

It's the real thing. It's about getting your life together. It's about looking damn fine. It's about man handling. It's about the casa question. About solitude. About stain removal. Whether you're a young woman just out of school and starting a career or a harriedly successful thirty-something, if you're still wasting time looking for stockings that match or struggling to keep on top of credit card bills, you need help. And not a glossy monthly's unattainable idea of help, but the stuff that works-the nuts and bolts.

Anna Johnson's THREE BLACK SKIRTS is the book that delivers. In a voice that's knowing, smart, hip and funny-and with the author's own retro illustrations to match-Ms. Johnson cuts right to the core of the chaos that passes for life today and shows how to find order, balance, fulfillment. She covers it all: health, dating, career moves, finances, entertaining, body image, sex, and, of course, the indispensability of owning three black skirts. She offers the twenty basics for money management, and three keys for shopaholics to gain control over their passion. A workshop to build better food habits. Ten ways to get to sleep. Dress codes to the major cities. A Schmoozer's Guide to Compliments. Principles of Modern Courtship. And everything in between, from an extensive stain removal chart to eleven ideas for reawakening your spiritual life. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too impressed
I'm halfway through this book and I'm not too impressed.A lot of it is common sense I already knew. The parts that I am impressed on are the very risque chapters!!! ;DI'd still buy this book again....but used.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Than Expected
I would've been happy with just a book giving me permission to streamline my wardrobe & look like the drawing on the cover, which is what I thought this book was. (Yes, I *do* know about liner notes and synopses on back covers - I was in a hurry.) But Ms. Johnson's three skirts helped me out in far more areas of my life than just getting ready in the morning. I highly recommend this book to any woman trying to do it all, and be it all, in high heels and lipstick...that's all of us, isn't it?

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read
This book gives pretty good advice and is written with a sense of humor.I thought it was going to be more about dressing, but it's so much more.
It gives useful advise for many areas of a women's life....health, fashion, organizing, entertainment and more.
I have owned it for awhile and I go back to it from time to time to re-read some of the chapters.
I think it can be useful for women in their 20's, 30's and beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Find!
I've had this book for YEARS and STILL love it! Whether it's for budgeting, wardrobe basics, eating habits, nurturing oneself, or one of the many other topics the author touches on, it's full of USEFUL information (while still being entertaining to read) and I've recommended it to all of my friends at some point or another.

5-0 out of 5 stars a very wise, subversive guide
I hate pitting so-called "real" literature against chick lit but a lot of people do, so I feel I must start off my review by saying, if you think this book is just about fashion, bagging a man, and obsessing over your last 10 pounds, nothing could be further from the truth.

Unlike a lot of self-help books and the many "How to be a GIRL!" titles that are out now, Three Black Skirts is actually helpful. Since purchasing this book last year, I've kept it close at hand to refer to whenever I need to remember I am more than my job, that being the friend I want to have is the best thing I can do, and that treating myself to a yoga retreat is not a bad idea. There's also tips on home repair, decorating, eating real food that's nourishing and delicious, and volunteerism. And that's just what I can remember off the top of my head. When I shared parts of this book with my boyfriend, he eventually said, "God, this book is about everything!" And it sort of is. He enjoyed the toilet repair tips.

Anna Johnson's voice is at once poetic, direct, honest, and kind. She's also a terrific illustrator. And she's been nice enough to share other great, diverse resources (including Thatch Nhat Hanh, Dr. Seuss, and Colette) at the end of this book because you'll definitely want more once you're done.

Her latest The Yummy Mummy Manifesto was also a fantastic read and I'm not even a mom. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Chilling realism
"Instead of being so amiable and demure on our first date, I should have taken a gun with me and shot him." Now there's a hook that pulls you in. The author is writing about her future husband.

"Susan married Frank Perez and began twenty years of chaos and uncertainty with the unstable man. After two children, a nasty divorce and reconciliation, she agrees to move to Arizona to find peace in desert living. She cannot begin to foresee the nightmare they will soon be living."

This is a true story from a lady who's been there. A lady with an excellent command of the language. A lady who can write. A lady with a wonderfully understated style that leaves nothing out but which makes you think instead of preaching to you. Every victim has his or her own story. A story which only he or she can tell. Be grateful that Susan Shelley has shared her story with us.

Susan and Nancy are fraternal twins who were adopted. Nancy dated Frank once and decided he was a bit too domineering for her tastes. But Nancy thought he would be a good match for Susan. The rest is an ugly history. Even from the first chapters, hindsight tells us that the signs were all there. But without the benefit of hindsight, would you have known?

Susan was a good young girl, raised in a strongly Christian home, with a beautiful and naive heart. She just didn't know what to expect of a marriage. She didn't know that such dominance is abnormal.

Frank Joseph Perez's family is from Spain and Puerto Rico. His grandmother was born in the Canary Islands. This does not matter to Susan's domineering mother. As far as she's concerned, they're all Mexican trash. She has plenty of other ammunition in her arsenal besides blatant racism. Frank smokes, and he loves guns and hunting.

Just to get out of that environment, Susan made the tragic mistake of marrying Frank. They changed the planned June wedding to a Las Vegas elopement on New Years Day, 1968. Frank tells of his first wife, who his father forced him to marry because he got her pregnant. They were both teenagers, too young, and it didn't work out. Frank blames his father, not himself, for that mess. Remember what I said about hindsight?

Part of what makes this book so special is that it's about life. It's not a simple story of a good woman and a bad man. He, too, is a victim, and the reader feels his pain. I know this was hard for the author to write. It's the first book in a three-part series. It works quite well as a stand-alone novel, and it also makes me anxious to read the next book.

Don't start reading it unless you have time to finish it. Not before bed, not on the bus to work. You won't be able to stop yourself from turning the pages.
