Inside the disintegrating Soviet Union, Raisa Omarovna Gibaydulina, a professor of scientific atheism at the Moscow Institute of Atheism, compiles a selection of excerpts from the articles, sermons, manifestos, and other writings by members of banned religious sects. Copies of this classified reference manual, The New Sectarianism, are smuggled to the West, where intellectuals attempt to assess the late-Soviet spiritual movements. A record of Gibaydulina’s own spiritual quest is preserved in the notes and letters she writes during the post-Soviet years before her death in April 1997.

Such is the form of Mikhail Epstein’s Cries in the New Wilderness, a work of extraordinary artistic and philosophical imagination, begun in Moscow in the mid-1980s and now available for the first time in English translation in an expanded version. Drawing on his own participation in Moscow’s intellectual associations and in expeditions to study popular religious beliefs in southern Russia and Ukraine, Epstein recreates the spiritual experience of a whole Russian generation. His is not a documentary book, however, but a "comedy of ideas," in which he constructs from the voices he hears in the culture around him the religious and philosophical worldviews of his fictional sects: Foodniks and Domesticans, Arkists and Bloodbrothers, Atheans and Good-believers, Steppies and Pushkinians.

Cries in the New Wilderness is filled with the voices of these sects, from the mystical Thingwrights and the absurdist Folls to the messianic Khazarists and the doomsday Steppies. As a counterpoint to this medley of comic, grotesque, poetic, banal, poignant, and harrowing voices is the voice of the commentator, Professor Gibaydulina, who struggles to maintain the purity and objectivity of her scientific atheism in the face of an amazing variety of religious experiences. Excerpt: George Chapman (December 14, 1865 - April 7, 1903) was a Polish serial killer. Born Seweryn Antonowicz Kłosowski in Poland, he moved as an adult to England, where he committed his crimes. He was convicted and executed after poisoning three women, but is remembered today mostly because some authorities suspected him of being the notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper. Chapman was born in the village of Nagórna, near Koło, Poland. According to a certificate found in his personal effects after his arrest, he was apprenticed at age 15 to a provincial surgeon in Zwoleń, whom he assisted in procedures such as the application of leeches for blood-letting. He then enrolled on a course in practical surgery at the Warsaw Praga hospital. This course was very brief, lasting from October 1885 to January 1886 (attested to by another certificate in his possession), but he continued to serve as a surgeon's assistant in Warsaw until December 1886. He later left Poland, although the year in which he came to England has not been ascertained. Witness testimony at his trial seems to indicate that he arrived in London between 1887 and 1888. Chapman took several mistresses, who often posed as his wife, three of whom he subsequently poisoned to death. They were Mary Spink (died December 25, 1897), Elizabeth "Bessie" Taylor (died February 14, 1901) and Maud Marsh (died October 22, 1902). Interesting, but doesn't give enough insight into the great works
I bought this book to add to my collection of "books about books".It is much more about the authors than the great books they wrote.I find it interesting, but not as useful as the Dirda books that I own.This book gives insight into the genius behind the books, but I prefer essays, like those of Michael Dirda, that entice and enlighten a little more about the books themselves.I will keep this book, but it will be at the back of the bookshelf, behind "Classics for Pleasure", "Bound to Please", and other great reference books like "501 Must-Read Books" edited by Emma Beare.This one is fine, but know that you are reading about the authors themselves, not so much about the actual books they wrote.

25 Crash Courses In Literary Dinstinction
These essays are wonderful introductions to the works of giants. Structual in their approach; none attempt to stray beyond the boundaries and only occasionally spend too much time brooding upon biographical references. If criticism is a gateway to talent, then this book is essential to any newcomer, writer, or teacher of literature.

Every Book Shelf Should Have This Book
This is a marvelous reference to so many masterpieces that every book shelf should have it. The selections are excellent,though one wishes there could have been even more, and the articles are well written. Highly recommended.

Let's hear it for the illustrator
Epstein has limited his collection to a few "literary" geniuses, but his introduction discusses elements and definitions of genius that apply to other of the sciences and arts. He quotes Melville: "Genius, all over the world, stands hand in hand, and one shock of recognition runs the whole circle round." Epstein--or someone--chose Barry Moser to do the illustrations for the book. I suggest that one cannot look at Moser's exquisite wood engravings--in this book and in the myriad other volumes he has illustrated--without seeing, feeling, knowing Melville's "shock of recognition." Even if you are not a fan of "Literary Genius"-es, pick up this book and wallow in the "genius" of the illustrations and the man who created them.
