Product Description
The Doppler principle is widely applied in astronomy, navigation, geodesy and a number of other disciplines of science and technology. Doppler sonography plays an increasingly important role in many fields of medicine - angiology, neurology, cardiology - an promises many exciting possibilities in the future. Yet, until recently, very little was known about the Austrian scientist whose name has been given to an established and routine medical examination. This book seeks to fill this gap and gives insight into the life of Christian Doppler, not only as a scientist, but also as a persona nd family man. It provides a wealth of new information and many new documents on the man who presented his famous paper "On the coloured light of the double stars" (which appears in facsimile with an English translation) in Prague 150 years ago this year. ... Excerpt: Rudolf Joseph Lorenz Steiner (25 or 27 February 1861 30 March 1925) was an Austrian philosopher, social thinker, architect and esotericist. He gained initial recognition as a literary critic and cultural philosopher. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he founded a new spiritual movement, Anthroposophy, as an esoteric philosophy growing out of European transcendentalism and with links to Theosophy. Steiner led this movement through several phases. In the first, more philosophically oriented phase, Steiner attempted to find a synth...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=26104 ... Read more

Excerpt: Franz Peter Schubert (German pronunciation: ; January 31, 1797 November 19, 1828) was an Austrian composer. He wrote some 600 Lieder, nine symphonies (including the famous "Unfinished Symphony"), liturgical music, operas, some incidental music, and a large body of chamber and solo piano music. Franz Schubert was born into a musical family, and received formal musical training through much of his childhood. While Schubert had a close circle of friends and associates who admired his work (amongst them the prominent singer Johann Michael Vogl), wide appreciation of his music during his lifetime was limited at best. He was never able to secure adequate permanent employment, and for most of his career he relied on the support of friends and family. He made some money from published works, and occasionally gave private musical instruction. Interest in Schubert's work increased dramatically in the decades following his early death at the age of thirty-one. Composers such as Franz Liszt, Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn discovered, collected, and championed his works in the 19th century, as did musicologist Sir George Grove. Franz Schubert is now widely considered to be one of the greatest of all composers. Schubert was born in Himmelpfortgrund (now a part of Alsergrund), Vienna on January 31, 1797. His father, Franz Theodor Schubert, the son of a Moravian peasant, was a parish sc...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=44888 ... Read more

Excerpt:Physical cosmology Expanding universe Structure Formation Components Timeline Experiments Scientists item Redshift and blue shift Blue shift is the shortening of a transmitted signal's wavelength , and/or an increase in its frequency , due to the Doppler Effect , which indicates that the object is moving toward the observer. The name comes from the fact that the shorter-wavelength end of the optical spectrum is the blue (or violet ) end, hence, when visible light is compacted in wavelength, it is shifted towards the "blue" end of the spectrum. Since the longer-wavelength end of the visible electromagnetic spectrum is red , the opposite effect, of a lengthening of a signal's wavelength, is referred to as redshifting . While the terms "redshifting" and "blueshifting" imply significantly redder or bluer light, only the most distant galaxies and those moving at speeds far above average emit light that arrives with perceptible red or blue tinges. For the most part, shifting is not a visible phenomenon. These terms and conventions ("blue" = compaction, "red"= diffusing) are used even when referring to signals outside the optical range (for instance, radio waves , x-rays and gamma rays ). Astronomy Redshift is much more noted due to its importance to modern astronomy . While the general redshift of starlight is seen as evidence for an expanding universe, there ... ... Read more

Excerpt: Emil Artin (March 3, 1898, in Vienna December 20, 1962, in Hamburg) was an Austrian-Armenian mathematician. The mathematician Emil Artin was born on March 3, 1898 in Vienna to parents Emma Maria, née Laura (stage name Clarus), a soubrette on the operetta stages of Austria and Germany, and Emil Hadochadus Maria Artin, Austrian-born of Armenian descent. Several documents, including Emils birth certificate, list the fathers occupation as opera singer though others list it as art dealer. It seems at least plausible that he and Emma had met as colleagues in the theater. They had been married in St. Stephen's Parish on July 24, 1895. Emil entered school in September 1904, presumably in Vienna. By then, his father was already suffering symptoms of advanced syphilis, among them increasing mental instability, and was eventually institutionalized at the rece...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=245351 ... Excerpt: Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis (July 1, 1818 August 13, 1865; in Hungarian Semmelweis Ignác Fülöp or slightly "internationalized" Ignac Semmelweis), was a Hungarian physician described as the "savior of mothers", who discovered by 1847 that the incidence of puerperal fever could be drastically cut by the use of hand disinfection (by means of hand washing with chlorinated lime solution) in obstetrical clinics. Puerperal fever (or childbed fever) was common in mid-19th-century hospitals and often fatal, with mortality at 10%35%. Semmelweis postulated the theory of washing with "chlorinated lime solutions" in 1847 while working in Vienna General Hospital's First Obstetrical Clinic, where doctors...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=75319 ...
