Dirk Struik is 102 jaar oud en woont in Amerika, maar is afkomstig uit Nederland. Hij is een bekende wiskundige die veel afweet van de geschiedenis van zijn vak. Zijn in 1948 verschenen boek `A Concise History of Mathematics' is inmiddels in tenminste 18 talen, waaronder het Nederlands, vertaald en er zijn ettelijke herdrukken verschenen. Struik, geboren in Rotterdam op 30 september 1894, zou gemakkelijk in het `Guinness Book of Records' kunnen staan, want ondanks het feit dat hij inmiddels 102 jaar oud is werkt hij gewoon door. Hij heeft het zelfs erg druk. Hij reist veel (in oktober jl. was hij nog even in Nederland) en hij schrijft artikelen. Dirk Struik is in allerlei opzichten een bijzonder man. Hij heeft belangrijke bijdragen aan de wetenschap geleverd en vele grote geleerden uit de 20ste eeuw, waaronder Albert Einstein, persoonlijk gekend. Hij is een wandelende encyclopedie, die vrijwel alles wat in de 20ste eeuw is gebeurd bewust heeft meegemaakt: vanaf de Boerenoorlog via de eerste wereldoorlog, de Russische revolutie, de tweede wereldoorlog tot het uiteenvallen van de Sovjet Unie. Voor zijn vertrek naar Amerika was hij politiek zeer actief in de Nederlandse arbeidersbeweging. Tijdens zijn studietijd in Leiden heeft hij zich serieus afgevraagd wat hij later moest worden: professioneel politicus voor de socialistische partij of een wiskundige met politieke interesses. Het werd het laatste: in het najaar van 1926 vertrok Struik uit Nederland omdat hij benoemd was tot hoogleraar aan het MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), een van de top-universiteiten in de Verenigde Staten. Zijn linkse sympathieen hebben hem in Amerika na de tweede wereldoorlog nog grote problemen bezorgd. Ten tijde van de heksenjacht op vermeende communisten onder McCarthy heeft hij enkele jaren geen college mogen geven.

Struik, a highly respected analyst and geometer and an internationally acclaimed historian of mathematics, died at his home in Belmont on Saturday. He celebrated his 106th birthday on September 30. Professor Struik was a member of the MIT mathematics faculty from 1928 until 1960, and remained intellectually active throughout his life. Beginning in 1912, Professor Struik was educated very broadly in mathematics and physics at the University of Leiden, taking courses from Lorentz and de Sitter. After a short interruption (for lack of funds), he was invited by J. A. Schouten to do research on tensor analysis and differential geometry. It was during this time that he met and soon married Saly Ruth Ramler, a Czech mathematician and accomplished modern dancer. Dr. Ramler wrote her doctorate on the axiomatics of affine geometry under G. Pick and G. Kowalewski at the University of Prague in 1918, and as Professor Struik later wrote, "Ruth may well have been the first woman at the more than 500-year-old university to receive a doctorate in mathematics." A professor emeritus of mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he was born in Rotterdam in 1894, the son of a high school teacher of mathematics. Dr. Struik came to the United States in 1926 to teach at MIT. His wife Sally R. Ramler, a native of Czechoslovakia and also an accomplished mathematician, accompanied him. A socialist, Professor Struik was an adherent of Marxist ideas, who welcomed the rise of Leninist communism, beginning with the October Russian Revolution of 1917 and witnessed its demise over seven decades later. He was a Marxist, but not a Marxist-Leninist Communist, until his death. During the anti-Communist fervor in the US after World War II, which Struik described at "half reminiscent of Nazi Germany, half of Alice in Wonderland," he was denounced as a traitor in 1951 by Federal Bureau of Investigation informant Herbert Philbrick before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Until the charges were dropped in 1955, he was suspended with pay from his professorship at MIT. In a 1994 article in HISTORIA MATHEMATICA, David Rowe asserted that Dr. Struik became a cause celebre, traveling about the country to talk about the freedom of speech.
