A year later, he moved to Gottingen and attended lectures by Hilbert, Klein, Minkowski, Runge, Landau, Caratheodory, Toeplitz and others. In 1920, he was nominated Associate Professor at the Lwow University and in 1923 - Professor. He became a member of the Lwow Scientific Society in 1926, and in 1929 he founded, together with Stefan Banach, the periodical "Studia Mathematica", devoted mainly to functional analysis. From the very beginning (1931) of the series "Monografie Matematyczne", Steinhaus has been a member of the editorial committee. In 1945 at Cracow, he contributed to the organization of the Wrocˆlaw University, where he was appointed to a department, later called the Department of Application of Mathematics. In November of that year he settled in Wrocˆlaw and was the organizer and first dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (at that a de facto common faculty of the University and the Technical University). Steinhaus was the first chairman of the Wrocˆlaw Branch of the Polish Mathematical Society, one of the founders and the first secretary-general of the Wrocˆlaw Scientific Society.

Steinhaus studied Lebesgue 's two major books (1904) and (1906) around 1912 after completing his doctorate. During one such walk I overheard the words " Lebesgue measure". I approached the park bench and introduced myself to the two young apprentices of mathematics. They told me they had another companion by the name of Witold Wilkosz, whom they extravagantly praise. The youngsters were Stefan Banach and Otto Nikodym. From then on we would meet on a regular basis, and ... we decided to establish a mathematical society. As initiator of the idea, I made my room available for meetings and, as the first step in preparations, nailed an oilcloth blackboard to the wall. When the French manager of the boarding house saw what I had done, she was terrified - what was the proprietor going to say? I calmed her down reminding her that the owner of the building was my uncle's brother-in-law, and she forgave my transgression. However, I had made a mistake. Mr L took the position of a traditional, hard-nosed landlord and was unmoved by the lofty goal the blackboard was supposed to serve. The society expanded - it was the first ray of light of this kind in Poland.

Przez rok był asystentem matematyki na Uniwersytecie Lwowskim. W 1918 opublikował pracę Additive und stetige Funktionaloperationen ("Mathematische Zeitschrift", 5/1919), uważaną za pierwszą polską pracę o operacjach funkcyjnych. Po zakończeniu I wojny światowej przebywał w Jaśle, gdzie pracował jako matematyk w biurze rozdziału gazu.
