    Extractions: The Ferguson mss., 1864-1929, are a collection of letters to Charles Eugene Ferguson, 1856-1945, a physician of Indianapolis, Indiana, and a member of the Indiana University School of Medicine faculty. Career: born May 29, 1856, Indianapolis, Indiana, son of Norval Wilson and Julia (Rexford) Ferguson; married Isabel J. Lamb, Feb. 14, 1882; Medical College of Indiana, 1892; taught histology at Indiana Medical College, 1892-1896; superintendent city dispensary, 1893; superintendent city hospital, 1894-1896; secretary city board of health, 1895; professor of bacteriology, 1896-1907; post graduate work in Berlin and Vienna, 1907; clinical professor of obstetrics, Indiana University School of Medicine, 1910-1915; associate professor, 1915-1945; died May 18, 1945. The manuscripts consist of letters from famous persons, including scientists, well-known authors, and political figures. Let Christians not be sold outside of the land or to heathens: Also we forbid any one to sell a Christian into a foreign land and especially to heathens. For let great care be taken lest their souls for which Christ gave His life be sold into damnation. Concerning serfs and their manumission: And we prohibit any one to sell a man out of the country. But if he, who wishes to make his serf free, hand him over to the sheriff by his right hand in full assembly, he must proclaim him quit of the yoke of his servitude by manumission, and show him free ways and gates and give him arms, viz., lance and sword; finally the man is made free. In fulfillment of his promise he made detailed arrangements for the collection of this tax, in some cases demesne serfs paying through their lord. A free man who has possessions in the country to the value of thirty pence will pay St. Peter's Pence. But the lord will acquit his bordars, ploughmen, and serfs for one penny. A burgess, if he have the value of one-half mark in his own chattels, will pay St. Peter's Pence. In Danish law a free man who has field chattels to the value of one-half mark will give St. Peter's Pence; and through the lord's penny all who live in his demesne will be quit. But he who keeps St. Peter's Pence is forced by censure of the Church to pay it and thirty pence for a fine besides. On November 10 th Mr Spottiswoode let the students gain an insight into Shakespearean times concerning the theatre and its connection with society at that time (Shakespeare lived from 1564 to1616). He talked about the social aspects of theatre in Shakespeare’s days (it was pure proletarian entertainment to go to the theatre, that‘s why kings and queens let theatre companies come to their courts), gave a successful summary of "Twelfth Night" by using some of the audience to show the play‘s confusion by men playing women playing men - in Shakespearean times women on stage were strictly forbidden! So whenever Will wanted to express changes from day to night, weather or time passing, he had to make use of little hints for the audience in his texts, therefore listening was at least as important as watching in the theatre (and successfull actors must have been quite convincing and extremely active on stage as well).

In all these forms it received commendation from the authorities of the Episcopal Church in Scotland, and as now revised is reprinted in the hope that it may supply the present lack of any simple and popular account of the Church for ordinary readers. The little volume does not pretend to be exhaustive, nor to be written with any lofty impartiality. It is the narrative, sufficiently vouched, of a not uneducated man who had studied the records and arrived at certain definite conclusions and convictions. From these and from their application he did not shrink. William Inglis was sometime a schoolmaster in Leeds.

    Extractions: Alicia Anne Spottiswoode is remembered as the composer of "Annie Laurie" (1835). She was born at Westruther (Berwickshire) on 24 June 1810 and in 1836 she married Lord John Scott, brother of the 5th Duke of Buccleuch (d1860). She died on 12 March 1900. She was a collector of traditional songs and wrote 69 of her own, often basing them on older pieces, and this was what she did in the case of "Annie Laurie", whose original form was a poem by William Douglas of Fingland (Kirkcudbright) with the tune "Kempie Kaye". Spottiswoode altered the words and melody and added a third verse. AC Home

Jan. 1825 zu London, studierte in Oxford und übernahm dann die Druckerei der Königin, welche unter seiner Leitung namhaften Aufschwung gewann, ohne ihm die Muße zu selbständiger wissenschaftlicher Thätigkeit zu rauben. Seine frühsten Werke: "Meditationes analyticae" (1847) und "Elementary theorems relating to Determinants" (1851), bilden die erste umfassendere Darstellung der Determinantentheorie. Eine Reise durch Ostrußland (1856) beschrieb er in "A tarantasse journey through Eastern Russia" (1857) und eine andre durch Kroatien und Ungarn in Galtons "Vacation tourist in 1860". Seit 1870 wandte er der Optik und Elektrizitätslehre seine Aufmerksamkeit zu und schrieb noch "Polarisation of light" (1874). 1879 ward ihm die höchste wissenschaftliche Würde in England, die des Präsidenten der Royal Society, übertragen, welche er bis zu seinem Tod 27. Juni 1883 bekleidete.
