   Extractions: William Spottiswoode 's father was a member of the printing firm of Eyre and Spottiswoode, the Queen's printers, and he was related to John Spottiswood who was archbishop of St Andrews. William attended school in Laleham, then went to Eton College, one of the most prestigious schools in England situated on the Thames near London. From Eton he went to another top school in Harrow School, another prestigious school in Greater London. From Harrow, Spottiswoode was awarded a Lyon Scholarship to attend Balliol College, Oxford which he entered in 1842. Three years later he graduated with a First Class degree in mathematics. In 1846 and 1847 he was awarded mathematics scholarships at Balliol College where he became a lecturer in mathematics. In 1846 his father died and Spottiswoode became Queen's Printer. In the following year his first mathematical publication appeared Meditationes Analyticae.

The older sporrans were quite modest objects and ordinarily of leather; in modern Highland costume and in the uniform of Highland kilted regiments it has become a highly ornamental adjunct, with silver or metal rims, and a heavy long backing of horsehair or fur. In zoology and botany the word has a specific meaning of a sudden or singular variation from type, a " diversion " in a more etymological sense of the term. SPOTSWOOD (SPOTTSWOOD or SPOTTISWOOD), ALEXANDER (1676-1740), American colonial governor, was born, of an old Scotch family, in Tangier, Africa, in 1676. He served under Marlborough in the War of the Spanish Succession, and was wounded at Blenheim. He became lieutenant governor of Virginia in June 1710, when he was received with some enthusiasm, because he brought to the colony the privilege of habeas corpus; his term as governor closed in September 1722—probably because he meddled in ecclesiastical matters; but he remained in Virginia, living near his ironworks in Germanna, a settlement of Germans, on the Rapidan in Spottsylvania county (named in his honour) and he was deputy postmaster-general of the colonies from 1730 to 1739. He was the first representative of the British government in America who fully appreciated the value of the western territory. SPOTTSYLVANIA, a county of Virginia, U.S.A., so called after Alexander Spotswood (q.v.), lie-utenant governor of Virginia in 1710—f 722, who owned extensive estates and mines therein. It is bounded on the N. by the Rapidan and Rappahannock rivers and on the S. by the North Anna. It is celebrated as containing several of the most famous battlefields of the Civil War—Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, and particularly that of Spottsylvania Court House, where the armies of Grant and Lee contended for nearly two weeks (May 8-2 I, 1864). The battles of Chancellorsville, Wilderness and Spottsylvania are described in the article WILDERNESS. SPOUSE, (0.    Extractions: I n a room of the Tower of London in August 1189, two people who were about to be married met for the first time. This twist of fate or act of destiny would have a far-reaching effect on English history. The young lady was Isabel de Clare, sole heiress of Richard Strongbow de Clare, Earl of Pembroke and Striguil, and Aoife, daughter of Dermot MacMurrough, King of Leinster. The man was William Marshal, the second son of John the Marshal and Sibyl, sister of Patrick, Earl of Salisbury. There are no accounts of this first meeting nor of their marriage ceremony, but this was the final step in the making of one of the greatest knights and magnates of medieval English history. W illiam Marshal's life is well documented because less than a year after his death in 1219, his eldest son William II commissioned a record of his father's life. "L' Historie de Guillaume le Marechal," is a metrical history of a man and of the knightly class in the late twelfth and early thirteenth century. Little is known about the writer of "L' Historie" except that his first name was Jean, that he personally witnessed some of the events in Marshal's later life, and that he had access to Marshal's squire John D'Erley. The point of view is that of the secular knightly class and not of the ecclesiastical class. The events recorded in "L' Historie" can be verified in most instances by the official records in the Pipe Rolls, Charter Rolls, Close Rolls, Patent Rolls, Oblatis Rolls, and chronicles of the times.
