Bohr (Niels Henrik David): Nils Henrik David Bohr, 1885 - l962, dänischer Physiker. Er entwickelte 1912 das erste Atommodell. In diesem Bohrschen Atommodell vereinigte er die Plancksche Quantntheorie mit Rutherfords Atommodell. Er gewann den Nobelpreis 1922. Sommerfeld (Arnold): Arnold Sommerfeld wurde 1868 geboren und verstarb 1951. Er war ein deutscher Physiker und stellte u.a. eine Theorie des Kreisels auf, baute die Quanten- und Atomtheorie weiter aus und entwickelte außerdem noch eine eigene Theorie der Struktur des Wasserstoffspektrums.

    Extractions: Sommerfeld, Arnold (Johannes Wilhelm) As professor of theoretical physics at Munich (1906-31), he did his most important work. His investigations of atomic spectra led him to suggest that, in the Bohr model of the atom, the electrons move in elliptical orbits as well as circular ones. From this idea he postulated the azimuthal quantum number. He later introduced the magnetic quantum number as well. Sommerfeld also did detailed work on wave mechanics, and his theory of electrons in metals proved valuable in the study of thermoelectricity and metallic conduction.

It includes the materials on reels 1-79 and some of the microfilms of the Bohr Scientific Correspondence and Manuscripts which are described in Sources for History of Quantum Physics: An Inventory and Report by Thomas S. Kuhn, et al. (Philadelphia: American Philosophical Society, 1967). The inventory also includes the materials filmed after the catalog was published, starting with reel 80, described in more detail here. Users of this inventory should consult the Sources for details on the contents of reels 1-79, information on the sources of original materials, and for information on oral history interviews in the AHQP. The Sources also provides much useful information on other manuscript collections not microfilmed in AHQP. Microfilm reels 1-79 have been listed here as they appear in the Sources on pages 105-107.
