Angezogen vom großen Ruf der Mathematiker an der Universität Göttingen, wurde er Schüler von Felix Klein, dessen Anliegen es war, die theoretisch orientierten Mathematiker mit den anwendungsorientierten Technikern zu versöhnen.

Nach dem Studium der Mathematik, Physik, Chemie und Mineralogie wurde er 1897 in Clausthal-Zellerfeld Professor für Mathematik und 1900 Professor für angewandte Mathematik in Aachen. 1906 berief ihn die Universität München zum Professor für theoretische Physik; diesen Lehrstuhl hatte er bis 1931 inne. Ab 1897 arbeitete er zusammen mit Christian Felix Klein an einem vierbändigen Werk über den Kreisel (Über die Theorie des Kreisels, 1897-1910). Gleichzeitig untersuchte er andere Aspekte der angewandten Physik und der Technik, darunter Reibung, Schmierstoffe und Funk. Seine bedeutendsten Arbeiten aber bestanden in entscheidenden Beiträgen zur damals noch neuen Quantentheorie. Sommerfeld erweiterte die von Niels Bohr aufgestellte Atomtheorie und berechnete die Feinstruktur der Spektrallinien des Wasserstoffes. Außerdem wandte er die Wellenmechanik und die Fermi -Statistik auf die Untersuchung von Elektronen in Metallen an. Sein Werk Atombau und Spektrallinien (2 Bde., 1919-1929) wurde wegweisend in der Atomphysik. Zu seinen Schülern gehörten u. a

He inspired a constantly growing circle of students, which as well as Wolfgang Pauli, included Walther Kossel, Werner Heisenberg, Peter Debye, Hans Bethe and Gregor Wentzel. Arnold Sommerfeld received many honours. He enjoyed cordial friendships with Al-bert Einstein and Max Planck and subsequently with many of his students, in particu-lar Wolfgang Pauli. In the twenties he was invited to give guest lectures at many European universities, and also to California, Japan and India. He died on 24. April 1951 as the result of a traffic accident.
