Extractions: Jean Leray In 1933 Juliusz Schauder arrived in Paris on a Rockefeller scholarship to work with Hadamard . This led to a collaboration between Leray and Schauder This 1934 paper on topology and partial differential equations is of major importance:- In this paper what is now known as Leray-Schauder degree a homotopy invariant is defined. This degree is then used in an ingenious method to prove the existence of solutions to complicated partial differential equations. After his 1934 paper with Schauder , Leray published a paper on algebraic topology in the following year on the topology of Banach spaces. He then returned to work on analysis, in particular studying differential equations arising from hydrodynamics. He studied solutions of the initial value problem for three-dimensional Navier Stokes equations. He examined not only the existence and uniqueness of solutions but he showed that the solutions remained smooth for only a finite time after which turbulent solutions arise. In producing this theory Leray introduced many ideas of functional analysis which have today become standard tools. Although he had undertaken some topological work it was not easy for Leray to work on the topic without reading topological literature. He was able to obtain some papers through

C'est grâce à lui qu'à 11 ans je connaissais les nombres premiers, étais un adepte du darwinisme, étais passionné par la science, m'imaginant qu'elle avait tout expliqué. Aussi au Lycée de Nantes, l'enseignement de la chimie et de la physique m'ont un peu déçu. On ne m'introduisait pas dans les arcanes de leur théorie. Parfois le professeur disait : ``on démontre que'' et observait ma réaction avec un amusement discret qu'il me révéla des années plus tard ; je le foudroyais du regard quand il osait dire ``on démontre que'' ; j'étais le seul élève à le faire. [...] De modestes succès au concours général me prouvèrent que je pouvais accéder aux grandes écoles. Grâce au Lycée de Rennes, j'entrai rapidement à l' École Normale supérieure. J'y trouvai, ainsi qu'à la Sorbonne, c'est-à-dire à la faculté des sciences de Paris, et au Collège de France, des maîtres extraordinaires. [...]
