John Couch Adams was born in England in 1819. He was born to a farming family. When Adams was very young he showed a talent for doing math. He could do very difficult math problems in his head. Adams went to St. Johns College in Cambridge to study math. While a student there he used math to predict the presence of a new planet beyond Uranus. A few months after Adams made his prediction, a French astronomer also made the same prediction. The French astronomer was named Urbain Le Verrier. He wanted all of the credit for the discovery of the new planet which became known as Neptune. Most scientists now consider Adams and Le Verrier to be the co-discoverers of Neptune. Another contribution that Adams made to the world of astronomy involved the Leonid meteor shower. Adams studied the Leonid meteor shower as it occurred in 1866. He discovered it was due to a comet that comes very close to Earth once a year. Adams also studied the motion of the Moon. Adams taught math at Cambridge University. He also became the director of the Cambridge Observatory. John Couch Adams was married. He liked to study history, biology, literature, and geology. Adams died in 1892.

By mathematical calculation based on irregularities in the motion of Uranus, he predicted the position of the then unknown planet Neptune. Because of delay in England in making a telescopic search for the planet, the credit for the discovery went to a Frenchman, Leverrier. In 1858, Adams became professor of mathematics at St. Andrews Univ., but he soon returned to Cambridge, to occupy the Lowndean chair of astronomy and geometry until his death. From 1861 he was also director of the university observatory, preferring this post to that of astronomer royal, which was offered to him in 1881. He made valuable studies of the moon's motions, of the Leonids in the great meteor shower of 1866, and of terrestrial magnetism. His collected papers, edited by his brother, were published (1896-1900) at Cambridge.

William Swan was Professor of Natural Philosophy in the United College of St. Andrews University from 1859 to 1880. In 1880 he compiled an extensive catalogue listing all the scientific equipment in the department, including the historic instruments. Swan's catalogue entries are meticulous, and also reveal a dry sense of humour: for example, he describes a wooden clock as, "ferociously coarse and useless." Some of the instruments he catalogued still exist today in the School of Physics and Astronomy, such as the armilliary sphere, Gregorian telescope and astrolabes. Swan's main passion was optics, especially spectroscopy. He is credited with inventing the `Swan Spectrometer', which is little known today, although Swan published numerous articles on the subject. He was awarded the Royal Scottish Society of Arts Gold Medal for his work in November 1843. As was the case with many Victorian gentlemen, Swan was interested in many diverse topics and not just his chosen speciality. From the comments in his catalogue, and his correspondence with other scientists, he appears to have been an inquisitive, witty and intelligent character, who was always keen to learn more.
