Anders Zorn (1860-1920) was one of the leading European artists in the period around 1900.
He was a contemporary of Edvard Munch and of Max Liebermann, who was a personal friend and the subject of one of his paintings. Zorn's interest lay above all in creating realistic likenesses in the French tradition, which he executed with his characteristically rapid technique both in his painting and with an etching needle on copper plates. His models were prominent figures of international public life.
Next to Berlin and Dresden, the 50 works by Anders Zorn in the collection of
the Hamburg Kunsthalle's Department of Prints, Drawings and Photography represent the most comprehensive stock of etchings by the Swedish painter and graphic artist in Germany. The majority, namely 42 out of the 50 etchings held in the museum, were acquired during the artist's lifetime under the directorship of Alfred Lichtwark. As early as 1891, Lichtwark invited Zorn to come to Hamburg to paint a work for the "Galerie Hamburger Bilder". Zorn was no artistic innovator in the manner of the profoundly intense Norwegian painter Munch, he was an artist with visible leanings towards Impressionism who was active in the period leading up to Modernism and whose swiftly executed and psychologically perceptive etched portraits still hold an appeal for viewers today.

Tribune - COLUMNIST I have been writing a metropolitan news column for the Chicago Tribune since September 1986, when the editors decided to institutionalize the off-beat suburban feature stories I had been writing for the local news section most of that year. The column, called "Hometowns," alternated with Barbara Brotman's "About the Town" feature the whole concept was borrowed from "About New York" and "Our Towns," the alternating columns in The New York Times.
I'd been sent to the suburban news staff the previous year, against my wishes at the time, "to get more experience."
I needed it. Whether the timing of my transfer to the suburban outpost was merely coincidental with certain office political woes as I was assured or not, and despite my frantic protestations at the time, the move turned out to be the best thing for me.
My range was narrow. I'd been in the features and arts areas of journalism since my first article was published in the Oct. 2, 1977 issue of The Michigan Daily, the student newspaper at the University of Michigan where I was then a sophomore majoring in English Lit and Creative Writing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. When does your column run in the Chicago Tribune?
  • Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays on the front of the Metro section
  • Q. What do you write about?
  • Whatever I'm thinking about. My column, along with the column of my counterpart Mary Schmich, is not formally defined or constrained, and both of us use the broad definition of "Metro columnist" to encompass matters that we believe are on the mind of or of interest to Chicago-area readers. This generally does not include foreign affairs or issues that are raging elsewhere but little noticed here.
  • Q. Where do you get your ideas?
    A. Everywhere. I read newspapers and magazines obsessively and catch as many TV and radio news talk and documentary programs as I can, always hoping to discover issues or angles that shift me into column-writing mode. Frequently, however, I get ideas though casual conversation, e-mail or just going about life walking the dog, driving in the carpool, shopping. This allows me to charge the company overtime for every hour over eight that I am awake each day.

    Some Important Contributions:
One of Bice Sechi-Zorn's first experiments was the European G-stack collaboration, which helped enormously in the exploration of heavy mesons, their masses, and their decays. Played a key role in many of the Maryland group's most important experiments especially on the elucidation of the semi-leptonic decays of Sigma and Lambda hyperons. This work led directly to the Cabibbo theory of weak interactions. Was part of the PLUTO experiment at PETRA that provided, along with the other collider experiments at PETRA, the first experimental evidence for the existence of gluon jets.
"In the extensive work on the properties of hyperons, and their strong and weak interactions, an area in which the [Maryland] group's work constituted a substantial portion of the world data, her contributions were absolutely vital."
    Brandt Kehoe
