Conference News
Conference in Honor of Don Crowe
On May 4-7, 2000 a conference, ``Recent Trends in Geometry and Symmetry" in honor of Emeritus Professor Donald W. Crowe was held in Madison. As the conference announcement said, Donald W. Crowe has spent over 40 years popularizing, researching and teaching the many facets of geometry, especially aspects of geometry related to symmetry. The purpose of this conference was to honor his efforts by providing a forum to discuss new trends and developments in the study of geometry and symmetry.
Donald W. Crowe There were twenty-one contributed papers, including those given by former UW-Madison students Darrah Chavey (PhD 1984, D. W. Crowe), Gary Ebert (PhD 1975, R.H. Bruck), Leroy Dickey (PhD 1970, D. W. Crowe), Joe Malkevitch (PhD 1968, D. W. Crowe). In addition, there were sessions devoted to proposing and discussing problems, and exhibits of books and geometrical models and constructions. There were approximately 50 participants from all over. The conference was organized by Amir Assadi (UW), Steve Bauman (UW), Joseph Malkevitch (York College (CUNY)), Dorothy Washburn (Maryland Institute, College of Art), and Bob Wilson (UW). Funding support came from the UW Mathematics Department and from NSF. Cambridge University Press donated a large number of geometry-related books for use at the conference and placement in the Stephen Cole Kleene Mathematics Library at UW-Madison.

Elected to National Academy of Sciences New Haven, Conn. Six Yale researchers were recently elected to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences for distinguished and continued achievements in original research. The new members include three researchers from the Yale School of Medicine : Peter Cresswell, professor of immunobiology and dermatology and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute ; Pietro V. DeCamilli, M.D., professor of cell biology; and Richard P. Lifton, M.D., professor of genetics, medicine and molecular biophysics and biochemistry. Other researchers from Yale include Gregory A. Margulis, professor of mathematics and William D. Nordhaus, the A. Whitney Griswold professor of economics . The late Efim I. Zelmanov, professor of mathematics, was also elected posthumously to the academy. Cresswell's research centers on the molecular mechanisms of antigen processing, a phenomenon in which fragments of proteins from viruses, bacteria and other disease-causing organisms bind to the MHC molecules on human cells during an infection. These molecules are recognized by T Lymphocytes and are critical for making effective immune responses to infectious agents. DeCamilli's research focuses on the function of synapses, the specialized structures of the nervous system where signals are transmitted from one neuron to another. His studies have advanced knowledge of the mechanism of neurotransmitter secretion and also provided new insight into fundamental mechanisms through which all cells secrete substances and take up material from the extracellular media. He was also elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences this year.

"Moduli space of curves, abelian integrals and integrable systems" Summary: We describe Krichever and Phong's space of "geometric data" wchich consists of specific bundles over the moduli space of curves. These bundles are foliated in a natural way by symplectic manifolds which have the structure of completely integrable systems (with a natural system of action-angle variables). It turns out that many of the known integrable systems fall into this category. We also describe the role of the Whitham hierarchy in this context. References:

Those elected today bring the total number of active members to 1,874. More information Foreign associates are nonvoting members of the Academy, with citizenship outside the United States. Today's election brings the total number of foreign associates to 325. The National Academy of Sciences is a private organization of scientists and engineers dedicated to the furtherance of science and its use for the general welfare. It was established in 1863 by a congressional act of incorporation, signed by Abraham Lincoln, that calls on the Academy to act as an official adviser to the federal government, upon request, in any matter of science or technology.
