Hans Julius Zassenhaus
Emil Artin and Erich Hecke , his interests shifted to mathematics. Already as a student, Zassenhaus established himself as a serious mathematician. Among other things he found a new and beautiful proof (cf. ) of the Jordan theorem via the celebrated Zassenhaus (butterfly) lemma. In his 1934 dissertation (cf. ), written under Artin's supervision, he classified 3-fold transitive permutation groups whose elements are determined by their resrtictions to three points. From 1934 to 1936 Zassenhaus worked at the University of Rostock, where he completed the first draft of his book on group theory (cf. ), based on Artin's lectures, which became an instant classic. In 1936 he was appointed Artin's assistant at Hamburg, where he remained for the next four years, despite the ouster of Artin by the Nazis. There he completed his habilitation (cf. ) on Lie rings of prime characteristic. In 1940, resisting intense pressure to join the Nazi party as a condition for retaining his position, he resigned and joined the German navy, where he worked as a meteorologist throughout World War II. After the war he returned to Hamburg, where he was appointed chairman of the mathematics department. In 1949 he accepted a professorship at McGill University in Montreal, a position he retained for ten years. In 1959 he joined the faculty at the University of Notre Dame, where he also became the Director of the Computing Center. In 1963 he moved to The Ohio State University, at the behest of Arnold Ross, who had just become chairman after holding the same position at Notre Dame.

Hans Zassenhaus 's secondary education was at two schools in Hamburg, graduating from the Lichtwark Schule in 1930 and in the year entering the University of Hamburg. At first he studied mathematics and physics with the intention of specialising in atomic physics. However he had fine mathematics teachers in Artin and Hecke and, particularly Artin inspired him to undertake research in mathematics. Zassenhaus studied for his doctorate under Artin 's supervision. During this time he proved Zassenhaus's lemma, a beautiful result on subgroups which can be used to give a simple proof of the Jordan theorem. In his doctoral dissertation of 1934 he considered permutation groups whose elements are determined by the images of three points. These groups are called Zassenhaus groups today. In his dissertation Zassenhaus classified all 3-fold transitive Zassenhaus groups. These groups play an important role in the classification of finite simple groups coordinated by Gorenstein From 1934 to 1936 Zassenhaus worked at the University of Rostock and wrote his famous group theory text Lehrbuch der Gruppentheorie (1937) based on Artin 's lectures at Hamburg. Resolution in Memoriam: Hans J. Zassenhaus The Board of Trustees of The Ohio State University expresses its sorrow upon the death on November 21, 1991, of Hans J. Zassanhaus, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mathematics. Hans Zassenhaus was born in Coblinz-Moselweiss, Germany, on May 28, 1912. After four years of undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Hamburg, he received his doctorate in June 1934 at the age of 22 in 1938, Professor Zassenhaus earned his 'Habilitation' with a fundamental paper laying the foundations of a new area of research. During his long and illustrious career, he taught at several universities: Rostock University, Germany (1934-36), University of Hamburg. Germany (1936-48); University of Glasgow, Scotland (1948-49), Fellow of the British Council; McGill University. Canada, (1949-59), Peter Redpath Professor; University of Notre Dame, (1959-63); The Ohio State University (1963-64), Mershon Visiting Professor; and The Ohio State University, (1964-82), Research Professor. Some of the visiting positions held by him were: Gauss Professor, Gottingen University; Heidelberg University; UCLA; and Warwick University. Professor Zassenhaus was a truly outstanding mathematician and most inspiring colleague. Over a period of 58 years, he contributed about 150 research papers. His last paper appeared in 1991. His research interests included algebraic number theory, geometry of numbers, algebra and partial differential equations of mathematical physics. He had authored several books. His famous "Theory of Groups" (1949) remains an indispensable reference even today. Under his leadership, "The Journal of Number Theory" was established at Ohio State in 1969. Professor Zassenhaus took a profound interest in teaching of mathematics at all levels. He directed a large number of Ph.D. dissertations, 20 at Ohio State. He was very kind to his students and was most generous in sharing his time and creative ideas. Each summer, for several years, he taught a selected group of gifted high school students.
